Although expensive and potentially replaceable by transition metal catalysts, precious metal implementation in research and industry shows potential. These metals catalyze oxidation and hydrogenation due to their dissociative behavior toward hydrogen and oxygen, dehydrogenation, isomerization, and aromatization, etc. The precious metal catalysts, especially platinum-based catalysts, are involved in a variety of industrial processes. Examples include Pt-Rh gauze for nitric acid production, the Pt/Al2O3 catalyst for cyclohexane and propylene production, and Pd/Al2O3 catalysts for petrochemical hydropurification reactions, etc. A quick search of the number of published articles in the last five years containing a combination of corresponding “metals” (Pt, Pd, Ru, Rh and Au) and “catalysts” as keywords indicates the importance of the Pt catalysts, but also the continuous increase in the contribution of Pd and Au. This Special Issue reveals the importance of precious metals in catalysis and focuses on mono- and bi-metallic formulations of any supported precious metals and their promotional catalytic effect of other transition metals. The application of precious metals in diverse reactions, either homogeneous or heterogeneous, and studies of the preparation, characterization, and applications of the supported precious metal catalysts, are presented.

Certain techniques, in particular pedicle screw fIxation and cages, have not yet been fully approved by the FDA in the United States. However, throughout the rest of the world, the use of pedicle screws has become a standard technique for the spine surgeon, since it has been shown to improve fIxation techniques and allow segmental correction of the spine. The use of cages has become more and more popular, specifIcally as a tool of minimally invasive spinal surgery.

The focus is on the synthesis and processing of nanoparticles, the assembly and stability of nanostructures, characterization and properties, and applications. There is a growing interest in the processing of nanoparticles into consolidated bulk materials and coatings. The metastability of nanoparticles may lead to undesirable grain growth during thermally assisted consolidation or other processing routes, and the retention of nanostructures in a processed part or component continues to attract a great deal of attention. Current activity is concentrating on the deposition of nanostructured coatings using established thermal spray technology and wet chemistry methods. Naturally existing or artificially synthesized templates with unique structures and morphologies have been used to fabricate nanostructured materials with the same structural and morphological characteristics as the templates. Recent advances in characterization techniques have provided information on the structure, the surface and bulk chemistry of nanoparticles, and the structures and chemistry of exposed and buried surfaces of coatings. Contributors are drawn from Canada, France, UK, USA, Belarus, Russia and Ukraine.
