Many port authorities and port operators now realize that a static approach to cost leadership, a sole focus on inherited factor advantages and a simplistic reliance on new infrastructure to attract or retain clients, are no longer sufficient to guarantee a port's competitive success. They need to offer greater value added to port users, as well as to society. Hence, this new market environment forces ports to reconsider their present strategic position and to reflect on the strategic options for the future. The book builds upon an in-depth survey of economic actors in the Antwerp seaport cluster, with a specific focus on the container and conventional cargo clusters. It attempts to answer the question why these particular port clusters arc more competitive than similar clusters in other ports. In order to answer this question, the study develops and extends a number of formal tools of strategy analysis that should be useful to both port authorities and port operators.

Pravilno vrednotenje razvojnega potenciala in upravljanje s kraškimi območji je zelo pomembno za Slovenijo. V tej knjigi so predstavljene analize vpliva pokrajinskih značilnosti na rabo zemljišč in trajnostni razvoj obmejne slovenske kraške pokrajine ‒ Bele krajine. Da bi opozorili na kombinacijo družbenih dejavnikov in naravnih razmer za celostni pogled na kraško pokrajino, smo uporabili tri pristope: 1. oceno obremenjenosti kraške pokrajine zaradi človeka, 2. analizo sprememb rabe zemljišč in 3. kvantitativno in kvalitativno analizo trajnostnega razvoja Bele krajine. Kraški pojavi na trajnostni razvoj lahko vplivajo tako pozitivno kot negativno. Po mnenju lokalnih deležnikov so pozitivni učinki povezani večinoma s turizmom, negativni učinki pa predvsem v omejenem kmetijstvu. Sklenimo z mislijo, da so kraški pokrajinski pojavi lahko več kot le omejevalni dejavniki, saj imajo tudi razvojni potencial.

The project was funded by the European Commission’s Fifth Framework Programme.Each chapter deals in depth with a different aspect of municipal waste management systems. A method for the prognosis of waste generation is described. The reader is also provided with a clear understanding and significant criteria for the evaluation in terms of sustainability of the waste management situation. The book not only answers the question “how we are”, but also provides the reader with key tools to the more important point “how can we improve it”. One of the most important contributions of the project is the creation of two user adjustable computer assisted tool which support the accurate making of decisions in the waste management field, where rapid developing municipalities find it difficult to successfully plan their systems in order to fulfill the growing requirements of the European regulations.
