Book Effects of Parallel jet Mixing on Downstream Mach Number and Stagnation Pressure with Application to Engine Testing in Supersonic Tunnels

Download or read book Effects of Parallel jet Mixing on Downstream Mach Number and Stagnation Pressure with Application to Engine Testing in Supersonic Tunnels written by Harry Bernstein and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one-dimensional analysis of the results of the parallel-jet mixing encountered in the testing of engines in supersonic wind tunnels is reported. Equations were derived for determining the total pressure and Mach number behind the tunnel terminal shock. The method represents a simple procedure for determining these quantities while a tunnel is still in the design stage. A specific example of the method is included.

Book Automated Preliminary Design of Simplified Wing Structures to Satisfy Strength and Flutter Requirements

Download or read book Automated Preliminary Design of Simplified Wing Structures to Satisfy Strength and Flutter Requirements written by W. Jefferson Stroud and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple structural model of an aircraft wing is used to show the effects of strength (stress) and flutter requirements on the design of minimum-weight aircraft-wing structures. The wing is idealized as an isotropic sandwich plate with a variable cover thickness distribution and a variable depth between covers. Plate theory is used for the structural analysis, and piston theory is used for the unsteady aerodynamics in the flutter analysis. Mathematical programming techniques are used to find the minimum-weight cover thickness distribution which satisfies flutter, strength, and minimum-gage constraints. The method of solution, some sample results, and the computer program used to obtain these results are presented. The results indicate that the cover thickness distribution obtained when designing for the strength requirement alone may be quite different from the cover thickness distribution obtained when designing for either the flutter requirement alone or for both the strength and flutter requirements concurrently. This conclusion emphasizes the need for designing for both flutter and strength from the outset.

Book Synthesis of Subsonic Airplane Design

Download or read book Synthesis of Subsonic Airplane Design written by Egbert Torenbeek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1982-09-30 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the education of aeronautical engineers at Delft University of Technology started in 1940 under tae inspiring leadership of Professor H.J. van der Maas, much emphasis has been placed on the design of aircraft as part of the student's curriculum. Not only is aircraft design an optional subject for thesis work, but every aeronautical student has to carry out a preliminary airplane design in the course of his study. The main purpose of this preliminary design work is to enable the student to synthesize the knowledge ob tained separately in courses on aerodynamics, aircraft performances, stability and con trol, aircraft structures, etc. The student's exercises in preliminary design have been directed through the years by a number of staff members of the Department of Aerospace Engineering in Delft. The author of this book, Mr. E. Torenbeek, has made a large contribution to this part of the study programme for many years. Not only has he acquired vast experience in teaching airplane design at university level, but he has also been deeply involved in design-oriented re search, e.g. developing rational design methods and systematizing design information. I am very pleased that this wealth of experience, methods and data is now presented in this book.

Book Mechanics of Aero structures

Download or read book Mechanics of Aero structures written by Sudhakar Nair and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanics of Aero-structures is a concise textbook for students of aircraft structures, which covers aircraft loads and maneuvers, torsion and bending of single cell, multi-cell and open thin-walled structures. Static structural stability, energy methods, and aero-elastic instability are discussed. Numerous examples and exercises are included to enhance the students' facility with structural analysis. This textbook is meant for third- and fourth-year undergraduate students in the aerospace and aeronautical engineering programs, and the material included can be covered in a one semester course. A sufficient number of figures are included for the clarity of the subject matter. The book begins with a description of aerodynamic loads to motivate students, and includes an in-depth description of energy methods - an essential topic.
