Book Riemannian Geometry

Download or read book Riemannian Geometry written by Sylvestre Gallot and published by Springer. This book was released on 1990 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, based on a graduate course on Riemannian geometry and analysis onmanifolds, given in Paris, covers the topics of differential manifolds, Riemannian metrics, connections, geodesics and curvature, with special emphasis on the intrinsic features on the subject. Classical results on the relations between curvature and topology are treated in detail. The bookis quite self-contained, assuming of the reader only a knowledge of differential calculus in Euclidean space. It contains numerous exercises with full solutions and a series of detailed examples which are picked up again repeatedly to illustrate each new definition or property introduced. This book addresses both the graduate student wanting to learn Riemannian geometry, and also the professional mathematician from a neighbouring field who needs information about ideas and techniques which are now pervading many parts of mathematics.

Book Treatise on Classical Elasticity

Download or read book Treatise on Classical Elasticity written by Petre P. Teodorescu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 805 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deformable solids have a particularly complex character; mathematical modeling is not always simple and often leads to inextricable difficulties of computation. One of the simplest mathematical models and, at the same time, the most used model, is that of the elastic body – especially the linear one. But, notwithstanding its simplicity, even this model of a real body may lead to great difficulties of computation. The practical importance of a work about the theory of elasticity, which is also an introduction to the mechanics of deformable solids, consists of the use of scientific methods of computation in a domain in which simplified methods are still used. This treatise takes into account the consideration made above, with special attention to the theoretical study of the state of strain and stress of a deformable solid. The book draws on the known specialized literature, as well as the original results of the author and his 50+ years experience as Professor of Mechanics and Elasticity at the University of Bucharest. The construction of mathematical models is made by treating geometry and kinematics of deformation, mechanics of stresses and constitutive laws. Elastic, plastic and viscous properties are thus put in evidence and the corresponding theories are developed. Space problems are treated and various particular cases are taken into consideration. New solutions for boundary value problems of finite and infinite domains are given and a general theory of concentrated loads is built. Anisotropic and non-homogeneous bodies are studied as well. Cosserat type bodies are also modeled. The connection with thermal and viscous phenomena will be considered too. Audience: researchers in applied mathematics, mechanical and civil engineering.

Book Italian Mathematics Between the Two World Wars

Download or read book Italian Mathematics Between the Two World Wars written by Angelo Guerraggio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-20 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes Italian mathematics in the period between the two World Wars. It analyzes the development by focusing on both the interior and the external influences. Italian mathematics in that period was shaped by a colorful array of strong personalities who concentrated their efforts on a select number of fields and won international recognition and respect in an incredibly short time. Consequently, Italy was considered a third mathematical power after France and Germany.

  • Author : Heinz-Otto Peitgen
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book The Beauty of Fractals written by Heinz-Otto Peitgen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1986-07 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now approaching its tenth year, this hugely successful book presents an unusual attempt to publicise the field of Complex Dynamics. The text was originally conceived as a supplemented catalogue to the exhibition "Frontiers of Chaos", seen in Europe and the United States, and describes the context and meaning of these fascinating images. A total of 184 illustrations - including 88 full-colour pictures of Julia sets - are suggestive of a coffee-table book. However, the invited contributions which round off the book lend the text the required formality. Benoit Mandelbrot gives a very personal account, in his idiosyncratic self-centred style, of his discovery of the fractals named after him and Adrien Douady explains the solved and unsolved problems relating to this amusingly complex set.
