Book The Social Context of James Ensor s Art Practice

Download or read book The Social Context of James Ensor s Art Practice written by Susan M. Canning and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-10-20 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Vive la Sociale”: This rousing, revolutionary statement, written on a bright red banner across the top of James Ensor's Christ's Entry into Brussels in 1889, served as a visual manifesto and call to action by the Belgian artist (1860-1949), one that announced with an insistent, public voice the centrality of his art practice to the cultural discourse of modern Belgium. This provocative declaration serves as the title for this new study of Ensor's art focusing on its social discourse and the artist's interaction with and at times satirical encounter with his contemporary milieu. Rather than the alienated and traumatized Expressionist given preference in modern art history, Ensor is presented here as an artist of agency and purpose whose art practice engaged the issues and concerns of middle class Belgian life, society and politics and was informed by the values and class, race and gendered perspectives of his time. Ensor's radical vision and oppositional strategy of resistance, self-fashioning and performance remains relevant. This book with its timely, nuanced reading of the art and career of this often misunderstood “artist's artist”, invites a re-evaluation not only of Ensor's social context and expressive critique but also his unique contribution to modernist art practice.

Book excerpt: This book is also available in Paperback Erudite Eyes explores the network of the Antwerp cartographer Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598), a veritable trading zone of art and erudition. Populated by such luminaries as Pieter Bruegel, Joris Hoefnagel, Justus Lipsius and Benedictus Arias Montanus, among others, this vibrant antiquarian culture yielded new knowledge about local antiquities and distant civilizations, and offered a framework for articulating art and artistic practice. These fruitful exchanges, undertaken in a spirit of friendship and collaboration, are all the more astonishing when seen against the backdrop of the ongoing wars. Based on a close reading of early modern letters, alba amicorum, printed books, manuscripts and artworks, this book situates Netherlandish art and culture between Bruegel and Rubens in a European perspective.

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Jacques Jordaens written by Lucy Davis and published by Silvana. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the three most renowned Flemish Baroque painters - Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaens - Jacques Jordaens is undoubtedly the least studied, and therefore the least understood. He is often reduced to the role of talented genre painter, author of homely scenes like The King Drinks and As the Old Sing, So the Young Pipe. Yet the image of Jordaens as a poor man's Rubens - however beloved - obscures the better part of his extensive and varied oeuvre. This book elucidates the more erudite side of Jordaens' production by zeroing in on a single theme, the Allegory of Fertility, principal versions of which are held in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels and the Wallace Collection in London, respectively. The essays in this volume examine these canvases jointly and severally, exploring the complex relationship between the two paintings and their genesis. Curators from the two museums, restorers, Jordaens scholars, and university professors wielding the latest analytic techniques examine the two works from the perspective of their respective methodologies. Their multidisciplinary investigations are moreover richly illustrated - not only by images of paintings themselves, but also by preliminary drawings, prints, macro photos, X-rays, paint-layer analyses, and special digital imaging and analysis of the canvas weave. Most of the technical illustrations were produced specially for this publication. The scientific results of this international study reveal an artist who demonstrates his multifaceted and sometimes radical creativity in successive variations on a single theme, albeit one with immense possibilities.--quatrième de couv.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of the Great War and its aftermath on Belgian artistic life World War I had a major effect on Belgian visual arts. German occupation, the horror at the battlefield and the experience of exile led to multiple narratives and artistic expressions by Belgian artists during and after the war. Belgian interbellum art is extremely vibrant and diverse. 14/18 – Rupture or Continuity takes a look at Belgian artistic life in the years around the First World War and how it was affected by this event. The Great War was a catalyst of artistic oppositions, leading on the one hand to a Belgian avant-garde that explored new forms and styles, while continuing to uphold a more traditional and established art on the other. Whereas the war experience consolidated an already present style for some artists, for others it constituted a revolution leading to new artistic adventures. The collection of essays in the present book highlights these contrasting facets of Belgian art in its rich historical context during the early 20th century.

Book Jordaens and the Antique

Download or read book Jordaens and the Antique written by Joost vander Auwera and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678) was a Flemish Baroque painter whose work has largely been overshadowed by his contemporaries Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck. Providing new insight on the artist as well as art historical context for his works, Jacob Jordaens and Antiquity emphasizes his strategic intelligence with respect to imagery and the art market and challenges the common characterization of Jordaens as a bourgeois artist of genre scenes. Jordaens's work is examined as an example of classical culture being introduced into the commercial and intellectual life of Antwerp. He was an artist with an unusual talent for conveying imagery from classical literature, ranging from Satyr and Peasant to Diogenes Searching for an Honest Man. Focusing on the theme of antiquity, this volume features eighty paintings, drawings, tapestries, and sculptures from private collections and major museums, including the Museo Nacional del Prado in Spain and the Statens Museum for Kunst in Denmark."--Publisher's website.
