This research considers critically the similarities and differences in figurine use and depositional practices between the site core and smaller neighboring structure groups examined synchronically, while also charting similarities and differences across the entire site diachronically.

Excerpt: Caracol is the name given to a large ancient Maya archaeological site, located in what is now the Cayo District of Belize. It is situated approximately 40 kilometres south of Xunantunich and the town of San Ignacio Cayo, and 15 kilometers away from the Macal River. It rests on the Vaca Plateau at an elevation of 500 meters above sea-level, in the foothills of the Maya Mountains. Long thought to be a tertiary center, it is now known that the site was one of the most important regional political centers of the Maya Lowlands during the Classic Period. Caracol covered approximately 200 square kilometers, covering an area much larger than present-day Belize City (the largest metropolitan area in the country) and supported more than twice the modern city's population. "Caracol" is a modern name from Spanish: "snail, shell," but more generally meaning spiral- or volute-shaped- apparently on account of the winding access road that led to the site.. Its ancient name has been reconstructed from the Emblem Glyph popular among it's early rulers - Ux Witz Ajaw, or "Three Hills Lord." The full name of Caracol would be "Three-Hills Water," read Oxwitza', Uxwitza' or, hispanicised, "Oxhuitza." This place name may also reference the Three Stone Place of creation. The site was first reported by a native logger named Rosa Mai, who came across its remains in 1937 while searching for mahogany hardwood trees to exploit. While the United States of America was being defended planes began to return to the states loaded down with the bodies of these young eighteen and nineteen-year-old soldiers in body bags. If you are not knowledgeable about the Institute of Medicine (IOM). You would think it is the Veterans Administration (VA) fault why the Vietnam Veterans have not gotten their benefits. I would advise you to continue reading. Then I want you to ask the question why nongovernmental researchers are being hired to do the research on “Agent Orange?” I also want you to know the Institute of Medicine (IOM) is no longer under the same name. They have the same function but a new name called the Health & Medicine Division which is also nongovernmental. As concerned citizens we must ask the question of why nongovernmental agencies are being allowed to research “Agent Orange?” I am certain the results will not shock you as to why the VA is not able to advance the Vietnam Veterans benefits because they are receiving their reports from the (HMD) stating there is no correlation with “Agent Orange” to the sickness the Vietnam Veterans have. The VA gets these reports every two years. Another well kept secret is the number of agents used in Vietnam. While many of you think there was just “Agent Orange.” My research shows it was a total of six different agents used.

Book excerpt: Pre-Mamom Pottery Variation and the Preclassic Origins of the Lowland Maya summarizes archaeological researchers’ current views on the adoption and first use of pottery across the Maya lowlands. Covering the early Middle Preclassic period, when communities began using and producing pottery for the first time (roughly 1000–600 BC), through to the establishment of a recognizably Maya tradition, termed the Mamom ceramic sphere (about 600–300 BC), the book demonstrates that the adoption was broadly contemporary, with variation in how the new technology was adapted locally. Analyzing ceramics found at sites in Belize, Petén (Guatemala), and Mexico, the contributors provide evidence that the pre-Mamom expansion of pottery resulted from increased dependence on maize agriculture, exploitation of limestone caprock, and greater reliance on a preexisting system of long-distance exchange. The chapters describe the individual experiences of new potting communities at various sites across the region. They are supplemented by appendixes presenting key chronological data as well as the principal types and varieties of pre-Mamom ceramic complexes across the various spheres: Xe, Eb, Swasey, Cunil, and Ek. A significant amount of new material has been excavated in the last decade, changing what is known about the early Middle Preclassic period and making Pre-Mamom Pottery Variation and the Preclassic Origins of the Lowland Maya a first read of the early ceramic prehistory of the Maya lowlands.
