Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s London in the summer of 1984, a time of big hair, bold clothes and an ever-present sense of foreboding, just scratching beneath the surface. Here there is high unemployment and a housing shortage compounded by the counties’ jobless, striking miners and tourists all converging on the capital. When Elizabeth arrives in London she finds herself living in a once grand hotel, now cheap hostel, sharing a room with five strangers. Forced into each other’s personal space the normal boundaries become non-existent as they find work, fall in love and forge friendships that are more akin to family. As their interactions with the outside world infringe on their already pressured living conditions, it seems there is just no room for privacy. But, with so much on show, it’s surprising how little they know about each other.

Book The Rat

    Book Details:
  • Author : Samuel Anthony Barnett
  • Publisher : Transaction Publishers
  • Release : 2007-04-01
  • ISBN : 0202368467
  • Pages : 314 pages

Download or read book The Rat written by Samuel Anthony Barnett and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The laws of animal behavior have been revised and revealed through research performed by zoologists, physiologists and experimental psychologists. Each has contributed much. Their main meeting ground has been the study of mammals, especially rats. This classic book is unique in bringing together the principal conclusions of these researchers in a compact, well illustrated, and lucid form. The author himself made important original contributions to wild rat behavior; his account of "white rat psychology" and of relevant work on other species is equally authoritative. Experience as a teacher enabled him to write an unusually logical and comprehensive text, suitable for students of zoology, psychology and medicine. This book belongs to no particular school of biology or psychology. Rather it admits the work of all schools and strict adherence to none. The principal topics covered include: movement in the living space; feeding behavior; social and reproductive behavior; the analysis of "instinct"; the analysis of learned behavior; "motivation" and "drive"; the brain and behavior. The book includes a full, carefully selected bibliography, current up to the time of original publication of the original edition. S. A. Barnett (1915-2003) was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford where he became Christopher Welch Scholar after taking a First in Zoology. He was a senior lecturer, and eventually was appointed chair at the Glasgow University Zoology Department in 1971. He has studied behavior, hybrid vigor and effects of breeding at a low temperature in rats and mice and wrote over 150 papers and nine books.

Book Younger for Longer

Download or read book Younger for Longer written by Duncan Carmichael and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2018-12-06 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Revelatory and accessible' Sunday Post 'Be good to yourself . . . [Younger for Longer] features wisdom on nutrition, sleep, mood regulation and, most importantly, hormonal health for men and women.' Scotsman 'Younger for Longer tells you exactly what you need in order to live an extended healthy life. It's very 80/20 and one of the best books I've read in ages.' Richard Koch, author of million-seller The 80/20 Principle The goal of this book is to show readers how to live a healthy life free from the debilitations of ageing, helping them to stay mentally alert and physically active, and making sure they get the most out of all of their years. That means aiming for optimal health. However, focusing on one factor alone will not get them there. Our sleep, our mood, what we eat, our detoxification system and our hormones are just some of the factors that interact in amazing ways to make us who we are; they are also at the very heart of the aging process. This book shows how these different strands combine in ways that can be positive or negative - and explains why this interaction depends far more on the lifestyle we choose than on the genes we inherit. In that way it gives the reader a unique and comprehensive understanding of their body and tells them how, with this knowledge, they can maximize their health. The topics range from nutrition, toxins, men's health and women's health to understanding why our skin, brain and liver age - and how to undo the damage and stave off ageing. But the book's main focus underlying all of this is hormones: the chemicals that tell different parts of our body what to do. Our hormone levels vary throughout our life, but if they are supported correctly they can keep us youthful and vital into our final years. Finding health, then, is not about seven ways to detox or the five best vitamins. The body is far more complex than that and, in an approach aimed specifically at the layperson, Younger for Longer traces the exciting path of how the body works to help the reader create the best person they can be for the rest of their life.

Book Beyond the Therapeutic State

Download or read book Beyond the Therapeutic State written by Del Loewenthal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The therapeutic state is a pervasive set of practices and ideologies which have been ever present in the twentieth century. This book of international contributors is about bringing into question many of these reified, dogmatic ideologies. Classifications, diagnosis and the treatments have been shown to be ineffectual for many populations across the globe, but still we persist with redundant, defunct methods and techniques. Why? Because, as some would suggest, we have nothing better. The danger that the state is taking away one of the last confidential spaces for people to allow thoughts to come to them has never been greater. This book invites readers to think beyond the state and its therapeutics. It will be relevant to many professions, professionals, service users, families, survivors and organisations; and those who are looking for something different. This book was originally published as a special issue of the European Journal of Psychotherapy & Counselling.
