Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s a bad case of stage fright for a stand-up comic with killer material and blood on his hands. Lawrence Lariar was one the most popular cartoonists of the twentieth century. But from the 1940s through the 1960s, he also crafted a line of lean and mean detective and mystery novels under his own name as well as the pseudonyms Michael Stark, Adam Knight, Michael Lawrence, and Marston La France. Lariar now gets his due as a leading artist in hardboiled crime fiction. Manhattan PI Steve Gant is on a busman’s holiday at The Glades, a beachfront cabaret for the rich and famous. The joint is a big break for his childhood buddy Chuck Bond, a rising comic emceeing opening night. Unfortunately, the gagman’s got the sweats. A tabloid rag is ready to kill his career with one story: Chuck’s past as a member of the Kings Highway Kings, a notorious Flatbush wolf pack that terrorized the city years ago. But Chuck’s got an even bigger problem here and now. Headlining songbird Gloria Clark is in his cabana with a knife in her back. Now he wants one small favor from Gant: help him hide her body. Is Chuck being framed? Is Gant a dupe? As bad as it looks, it’s going to get worse. No joke.

Book excerpt: It's summertime, and Cassie Hall, concierge at the luxurious Parkstone Apartments, is readying the facility's rooftop pool for opening day. The beautiful red-and-white striped cabana will look fabulous next to the blue water, she notes. The first group to use the pool is the Parkstone swim club, headed by ebullient resident Dot Olive. However, a couple days later when Cassie arrives to check on the group, she finds the pool area empty except for Dot Olive's dead body underneath the tipped over cabana. Not an auspicious way to start the summer. Another dead body in an ever-lengthening list of corpses that have been accumulating at the Parkstone, much to Cassie's chagrin and that of her fiance, Detective Eric Peters, who now apparently has another murder on his plate. No sooner has the body been discovered but Cassie is out sleuthing, trying to determine which of the Parkstone's rich residents could have offed the effervescent Mrs. Olive. Motives and suspects quickly pile up, and although Eric chastises her about sticking her nose in police business, Cassie just can't seem to leave the sleuthing to her fiance. That is, until the club room catches fire and a threatening message is left for Cassie in the rubble. Will this scare her into backing off? Not likely. Cassie is determined to find out who killed this Cabana Corpse before summer is over!

Book excerpt: In wartime 1943 small towns along the North Carolina Coastal Plain were invaded by many thousands of Marines from Camp Lejeune and soldiers from Ft. Bragg. Cheap motels, cheaper booze, easy sex and young men with uncertain futures disrupted the life of rural Lenoir County. However, civilians and soldiers got along. That is, until a soldier hired a Marine to murder the soldiers beautiful wife, and in a tragic case of mistaken identity the Marine murdered his co-conspirators teenage daughter. Then the situation changed. Set against the backdrop of the wartime small-town South, The Puppeteer is a classic tale of murder for hire, mistaken identity, cunning betrayal and exacting revenge, during a period that came to be known as The Fifteen Days in the Summer of 1943.

Download or read book KAHOOLAWE written by Rod Williams and published by Rod Williams. This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synopsis KAHOOLAWE The primary locale is the Hawaiian island of KAHOOLAWE with backdrops including Maui, Mexico, Vietnam and Alaska. The theme is love, the love of a man and woman for a mute Vietnamese girl and their frantic search for her kidnapper The search ends on the desolate uninhabited island of KAHOOLAWE in the midst of naval gunfire, a Kona storm and an Aleutian born tsunami. Adding to the mix is the arrival on Maui of a movie production company with a cast of unforgettable and very shallow actors, an incompetent director and a doomed producer. Prior to the kidnapping several savage murders occur on Maui followed by an inept coroner's investigation and a manhunt in the clouds with a near capture. There are body parts, mostly human heads throughout the manuscript interspersed with ambush humor. The murder victims include the director of the Hawaii visitors Bureau, A Bishop in the Catholic Church, a well known Hollywood producer and a young couple on their honeymoon in the crater of Haleakala. In sum, it’s a fresh non industry produced story, free of the repetitive formula sometimes mass produced by the usual script purveyors. The ending provides a launching pad for a sequel.

Book Prisoners Of Santo Tomas

Download or read book Prisoners Of Santo Tomas written by Celia Lucas and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 1990-12-31 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been countless books about the sub-human brutality of the Japanese to their prisoners-of-war, nearly all of which have been written by Soldiers. There have been few, if any, books which describe what it is like for a woman and her teenage daughter to find themselves suddenly swept in the holocaust of the war in the Pacific. For this reason the story if Isla Corfield is of exceptional interest. Captured by the japanese when the evacuee ship from Shanghai was diverted to the Philippines, Mrs Corfield and her daughter Gill found themselves interned with 3,500 other men, women and children at Santo Tomas, Manila's erstwhile University. The extraordinary way of life which evolved within the camp becomes gradually understandable as each person's character is related to the situation in which they find themselves: and gradually, as the entrepreneurs get into their stride, there emerge in microcosm all the 'amenities' of life 'outside the wire'- from restaurants to brothels. In 1944 the Corfields are moved to Los Baanos, a new camp in the country, where conditions are appalling and many die of starvation. But at last rescue comes at the hands of the U.S 11th Airborne Division in the form of a combined air/sea/land rescue operation of split-second efficiency, and the 2000 survivors are literally snatched from the jaws of death. This is the first time that a detailed account of this remarkable operation has been published. Celia Lucas has used the 36 exercise books which Isla Corfield risked death to keep to tell this very remarkable story of a mother and daughter who managed to preserve their sanity, their standards and their sense of humour when the world around them suddenly went mad.
