Book excerpt: Cab and Caboose By Kirk Munroe 'Cab & Caboose' is a journey through the young life of one Rodman Ray Blake, railroad dreamer. Written in a style akin to 'Huckleberry Finn', it follows Rodman's meteoric rise through the ranks of railroad men. It is a tale full of adventures, derring-do, heroism, and passion for the railroad's mystique that must have evoked a genuine thrill in the hearts and minds of the young men and women who first read its pages more than a century ago. The numerous re-printings it experienced, over a great many years, seems only to prove this out. While a bit dated in some respects, it still offers young readers a glimpse of what life was like at the turn of the last century. Further, it also serves to prove that - no matter what era we live in - the problems faced through adolescence never seem to fundamentally change. In this, then, it offers an enduring connection to the modern day. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. It is to be the hardest one of all, isn't it?" Immensely flattered at being addressed as Mister Appleby, Snyder replied carelessly, "Oh, yes! of course I am most anxious to win it, especially as you are here to see it run; but I don't anticipate much difficulty. His youth was spent on the frontier, after which his family moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts where he attended school until he was sixteen. He publicly dropped "Charles" from his name in 1883. Book excerpt: Cab and Caboose By Kirk Munroe Excerpt and directly behind President Vanderveer and his pretty daughter, to whom he tried to render himself especially agreeable. He listened respectfully to the Major's stories, made amusing comments on the racers for Eltje's benefit, and laughed heartily at the puns that her father was given to making.
