Book Handbook of Research on Comparative Approaches to the Digital Age Revolution in Europe and the Americas

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Comparative Approaches to the Digital Age Revolution in Europe and the Americas written by Passarelli, Brasilina and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2015-09-21 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The way we talk, work, learn, and think has been greatly shaped by modern technology. These lifestyle changes have made digital literacy the new written literacy, where those who are not able to use computers are unable to function and perform everyday tasks. The Handbook of Research on Comparative Approaches to the Digital Age Revolution in Europe and the Americas explores the new ways that technology is shaping our society and the advances it is bringing, along with potential drawbacks, such as human jobs being replaced by computers. This expansive handbook is an essential reference source for students, academics, and professionals in the fields of communication, information technology, sociology, social policy, and education; it will also prove of interest to policymakers, funding-agencies, and digital inclusion program developers. This handbook features a broad scope of research-based articles on topics including, but not limited to, computational thinking, e-portfolios, e-citizenship, digital inclusion policies, and information literacy as a form of community empowerment.

Book Structure and Inference in Classical Planning

Download or read book Structure and Inference in Classical Planning written by Nir Lipovetzky and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-09-16 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical planning is the problem of finding a sequence of actions for achieving a goal from an initial state assuming that actions have deterministic effects. The most effective approach for finding such plans is based on heuristic search guided by heuristics extracted automatically from the problem representation. In this thesis, we introduce alternative approaches for performing inference over the structure of planning problems that do not appeal to heuristic functions, nor to reductions to other formalisms such as SAT or CSP. We show that many of the standard benchmark domains can be solved with almost no search or a polynomially bounded amount of search, once the structure of planning problems is taken into account. In certain cases we can characterize this structure in terms of a novel width parameter for classical planning.

Book excerpt: As urban regions face the demand to decrease fossil fuel dependency, many cities in the developing world are undertaking initiatives designed to create a greener city by aiming for a more sustainable form of urban development and, to do so, they need to evaluate existing modes of transportation and patterns of land use. Focusing on Oslo, an early leader in urban environmental policy making and a European 'green city' award winner, it argues that this evaluation must adopt and integrate two approaches: firstly, as a process of ecological modernization based on a combination of transit, densification, and mixed use development and secondly, as an opportunity to reconsider the character and substance of the built environment as a reflection of natural values, landscapes and natural resources of the wider region. Environmental debate and concern is widespread in Oslo, and this is reflected in its earlier planning decisions to leave intact large forest reserves, its successful ecological restoration of the Oslo fjord, the importance of outdoor culture among its residents, the relatively progressive political agenda of Norway, This book provides an opportunity for a critical assessment of the limitations and opportunities inherent in 'green Oslo' and suggests the need for much broader integrative approaches. It concludes by highlighting lessons which other cities might learn from Oslo.

Book Portuguese National Report Integration of High Skilled Third Country Nationals in Europe A New Proposal for Circular Talent Management

Download or read book Portuguese National Report Integration of High Skilled Third Country Nationals in Europe A New Proposal for Circular Talent Management written by Catarina Reis Oliveira and published by Observatório da Imigração, ACIDI, I.P.. This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a negative net migration for decades, Portugal shifted to an immigration country in the end of the 20th century. The first immigration flows were dominated by unqualified workers, mainly coming from African Portuguese Speaking countries (PALOP) that were former colonies. There are reports of some highly skilled immigrants that arrived in the 1990s, mainly from Brazilian and EU origin. The first time that Portugal truly started to face the challenge of receiving immigrants with higher education that were overqualified for the activities they were performing in the labour market was in the beginning of the 21st century with the arrival of Eastern Europeans. The Portuguese experience with different immigrant flows in the past three decades highlighted the existence of three different groups of highly skilled immigrants: the first of highly qualified immigrants at entrance to Portugal; the second composed by immigrants acknowledged as highly skilled after a process of equivalences and/or recognition of qualifications or after achieving a higher education in the Portuguese education system; and finally a third with potential highly skilled immigrants. The characteristics and specific needs of each group lead to challenges in integration policies and in the protection of rights, pressuring for the definition of new legislative pieces and the opening of new support services and programmes. The report highlights the developments of the past ten years in the policies (e.g. recognition of qualifications, action plans for immigrant integration) and measures (e.g. support offices to highly qualified immigrants; special programmes for the combat of overqualification of immigrants in needing professions such as the health sector) defined, targeting highly qualified immigrants in Portugal. Although Portugal did not yet transpose the EU Blue Card directive, since 2007 the Portuguese Immigration Act has foreseen two special legal titles for highly qualified immigrants’ entrance. Furthermore, several bilateral agreements have been defined between Portugal and other countries to either answer to specific needs of the Portuguese labour market (e.g. to bring health professionals) or to consolidate friendship and cooperation relations (e.g. arrival of students and professionals for additional training). As highlighted in the report, the challenges and vulnerabilities that highly qualified immigrants face in Portugal are mainly linked to whether immigrants’ qualifications are being used or not in the labour market, and/or being officially recognised or not. Hence, the integration needs and problems of the highly qualified immigrants in the country are characterised by four possible ideal types of highly skilled immigrants: (A) immigrants that have their equivalences recognised and are using them in the labour market; (B) immigrants that are working in higher education professions although their qualifications were not officially recognised; (C) immigrants that although had their qualifications recognised in Portugal are not using their education in the job they have; and (D) highly qualified immigrants that do not have both the recognition of qualifications and the use of them in the labour market. The differences of these four Ideal types raise different opportunities, challenges and integration needs for the immigrants. As discussed in the report, although the legal framework that defines the possibilities of the official recognition process of qualifications and equivalences is very important; it is furthermore relevant to analyse how the country is effectively using immigrants’ skills in the labour market (or, in contrast, is wasting human capital gathered with no costs to the country) and/or if it attracts highly skilled immigrants. The report concludes with a discussion on whether Portugal will be an attractive country to highly qualified immigrants in the future, to answer to the demand of certain professional sectors, when it is presently facing the emigration of Portuguese professionals that are unemployed due to, among other reasons, the fragile economic situation of the country

Book The Business of Sustainability

Download or read book The Business of Sustainability written by Chris Laszlo and published by Berkshire Publishing Group. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Business of Sustainability is a core resource for policy makers, members of the development community, entrepreneurs, and corporate executives, as well as business and economics students and their professors. It contains rich analysis of how sustainability is being factored into industries across the globe, with enlightening case studies of businesses serving as agents of change. Contributing authors provide a groundbreaking body of research-based knowledge. They explain that the concept of sustainability is being re-framed to be positive about business instead of being tied to the old notion of a trade-off between business and society (that is, if business wins, society and the environment must lose), and they explore how economic development can contribute to building our common future.

Book Modern Solid Waste Management in Practice

Download or read book Modern Solid Waste Management in Practice written by Anna Bernstad Saraiva Schott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on sustainable solid waste management in an urban context and gives an example of how a modern city can work with waste management for increased sustainability in close cooperation with the academy. The book describes challenges which the city is facing and presents a case on how these can be tackled based on several research and development projects performed in the City of Malmö over the last decade. In these projects, the city has worked as a test bed for new solutions, developed with and evaluated by the university. The projects and evaluations of the same have been developed with a multi-dimensional approach; including technical aspects, resource efficiency, economic parameters, information strategies towards households and user friendliness. Methods used for evaluation are presented in a comprehensive way together with a discussion on how results from performed evaluations have affected the solid waste management policy making in the city. The book describes a bridging over a commonly noticed gap between research on the one hand and policy making and technical management on the other. Several examples are given on how academy and real life and full-scale developments in the city can have a fruit-full collaboration, where feed-back from evaluation of made changes are used for continuous improvements – at the same time as the actual needs from the city forces the academy to develop new methods for evaluations and develop new solutions to previously un-known or un-addressed problems.

Book Framing Civic Engagement Political Participation and Active Citizenship in Europe

Download or read book Framing Civic Engagement Political Participation and Active Citizenship in Europe written by Cristiano Bee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book evaluates the role that civic engagement, political participation and active citizenship can play in promoting the establishment of a European polity. The chapters included here examine how the practice of active citizenship is managed and constructed in the context of a European drive to increase civic engagement and political participation in three member states (Portugal, Italy and the UK) and one accession country (Turkey). Looking at both processes and policies promoting active citizenship at the European and national levels, this book uncovers current discourses as well as political priorities and values that surround the activities of non- governmental organizations (NGOs). Of particular interest are debates about the nature and level of civic and political participation and engagement of marginal groups (women, youths, migrants and minorities) as they are particularly vulnerable to social exclusion. The book focuses on the interaction between institutions and civil society actors, addressing a number of questions related to their reciprocal role in influencing, shaping, criticising or disregarding certain political priorities. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Civil Society.

Book Planning and Design for Sustainable Urban Mobility

Download or read book Planning and Design for Sustainable Urban Mobility written by Un-Habitat and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban transport systems worldwide are faced by a multitude of challenges. Among the most visible of these are the traffic gridlocks experienced on city roads and highways all over the world. The prescribed solution to transport problems in most cities has thus been to build more infrastructures for cars, with a limited number of cities improving public transport systems in a sustainable manner. However, a number of challenges faced by urban transport systems – such as greenhouse gas emissions, noise and air pollution and road traffic accidents – do not necessarily get solved by the construction of new infrastructure. Planning and Design for Sustainable Urban Mobility argues that the development of sustainable urban transport systems requires a conceptual leap. The purpose of ‘transportation’ and ‘mobility’ is to gain access to destinations, activities, services and goods. Thus, access is the ultimate objective of transportation. As a result, urban planning and design should focus on how to bring people and places together, by creating cities that focus on accessibility, rather than simply increasing the length of urban transport infrastructure or increasing the movement of people or goods. Urban form and the functionality of the city are therefore a major focus of this report, which highlights the importance of integrated land-use and transport planning. This new report of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the world’s leading authority on urban issues, provides some thought-provoking insights and policy recommendations on how to plan and design sustainable urban mobility systems. The Global Report on Human Settlements is the most authoritative and up-to-date global assessment of human settlements conditions and trends. Preceding issues of the report have addressed such topics as Cities in a Globalizing World, The Challenge of Slums, Financing Urban Shelter, Enhancing Urban Safety and Security, Planning Sustainable Cities and Cities and Climate Change.

Book Young People and the Belt and Road Opportunities and Challenges in Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book Young People and the Belt and Road Opportunities and Challenges in Central and Eastern Europe written by and published by 三聯書店(香港)有限公司,聯合電子出版有限公司(代理). This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young People and the Belt and Road is a joint effort by over 40 young people across 20 countries to tell their stories about the future of Central and Eastern Europe, China, and the Belt and Road Initiative. In 2013, the Belt and Road Initiative, which envisions a world with better development, better connectivity, and better cooperation was launched in Kazakhstan,. As a global, multi-generational vision, the Belt and Road Initiative will primarily benefit the young people of the world today. To ensure the success of the Initiative, their voices need to be heard. This is particularly urgent as little systematic work has been done to encourage the participation of young people. This publication places the focus on young people and asks them the question: what should the Belt and Road Initiative look like for you? In this book, young authors from 16 Central and Eastern European nations share insights about their countries. For the Belt and Road Initiative, Central and Eastern Europe plays a critical role in linking together Western Europe, Northern Europe, Central Asia, and East Asia. Each chapter focuses on a single country in the region. Based on the complex historical background and present realities of their respective countries, the authors present their cases of the potential obstacles and opportunities related to the Initiative and provide their suggestions for change.
