This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Saint John of the Cross is the great unknown of the Christian community. The last forty years have seen a growth in prayer methods and transcendental meditation. The search for a guide that teaches such prayer and meditation practices have led many seekers to the teachings of Saint John of the Cross. Like a song that sings the beauty of the creation in its sublime poems, the Saint teaches us that all of the beauty of creation is nothing in comparison with the beauty of the divine. In this book, Isaías A. Rodriguez does not pretend to be able to substitute Saint John in what he can teach us, but he helps us to understand what Saint John says to us, to discover the roads that he shows us, and to stay on course for our life pilgrimage.

Book Humanism and Religion in Early Modern Spain

Download or read book Humanism and Religion in Early Modern Spain written by Terence O’Reilly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanism and Religion in Early Modern Spain brings together twenty-five essays by renowned historian Terence O’Reilly. The essays examine the interplay of religion and humanism in a series of writings composed in sixteenth-century Spain. It begins by presenting essential background: the coming together during the reign of the Emperor Charles V of Erasmian humanism and various movements of religious reform, some of them heterodox. It then moves on to the reign of Philip II, focusing on the mystical poetry and prose of St John of the Cross. It explores the influence on his writings of his humanist learning – classical, biblical and patristic. The third part of the book concerns a verse-epistle by John’s contemporary, Francisco de Aldana. One chapter presents the text with a parallel version in English, whilst two others trace its debt to Florentine Neoplatonism, particularly the thought of Marsilio Ficino. The final part is devoted to the humanism of the poet and Scripture scholar Luis de León, and specifically to the confluence in his work of biblical and classical motifs. This book is essential reading for scholars and students of early modern Spanish history, as well those interested in literary studies and the history of religion. (CS 1102).

Book Dissertation

Download or read book Dissertation written by David Brian Perrin and published by International Scholars Publications. This book was released on 1996 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Juan de la Cruz (St. John of the Cross) has been a major influence on Catholic thought for centuries. This important new work in English presents a Hermeneutical framework within which an interpretation of Juan de la Cruz's C_ntico may be undertaken. Dr. Perrin calls this framework a Global Hermeneutical Method. The phenomenological hermeneutics of Paul Ricoeur are used to construct this framework. Ricoeur's phenomenological hermeneutics of texts is based on a theory of mimesis as well as other congruent methodologies. A Hermeneutical approach to the Cantico does not merely ask the question, 'What does the text mean?' but also asks, 'What does the text mean for the reader today?'

Book Knowledge and Symbolization in Saint John of the Cross

Download or read book Knowledge and Symbolization in Saint John of the Cross written by Elizabeth Wilhelmsen and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1993 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works of Juan de la Cruz contains numerous passages dealing with human cognition both ordinary and mystical. This study traces San Juan's examination of the mystic's knowledge in and through God. The sixteenth-century Spanish thinker stresses that conditionality is a fundamental character of all human knowledge, and brings to light a complex movement of contiguity between one and another mode of cognitive activity. Also discussed is the expression, through the instruments of prose and poetry, of the mystic's supereminent and therefore ineffable experience of knowledge and love. Relying upon Juan de la Cruz's own texts, it is shown how a relative communication can be effected despite the barriers separating mystical from ordinary cognition.
