Download or read book The Library of William Byrd of Westover written by Kevin J. Hayes and published by Madison House Publishers, Incorporated. This book was released on 1997 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Stretch catalogue forms the basis for the present work. Since Stretch retained Byrd's shelf organization, I retain Stretch's organization. Though the purpose of this catalogue is to show what books Byrd owned, the nature of the surviving evidence makes it impossible to precisely describe the library's contents. The only titles that can be known definitely are those which survive with evidence of Byrd's ownership, those which were published in only one edition, or those which, based on Byrd's letters, diaries, and the Stretch and Zane catalogues, can be narrowed down to one possible edition. Consequently, the individual catalogue entries here have been organized to present information concerning all possible editions Byrd may have owned."--Preface.

Download or read book Environmental History of Water written by Petri S. Juuti and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Water Development Report 2003 pointed out the extensive problem that: 'Sadly, the tragedy of the water crisis is not simply a result of lack of water but is, essentially, one of poor water governance.' Cross-sectional and historical intra-national and international comparisons have been recognized as a valuable method of study in different sectors of human life, including technologies and governance. Environmental History of Water fills this gap, with its main focus being on water and sanitation services and their evolution. Altogether 34 authors have written 30 chapters for this multidisciplinary book which divides into four chronological parts, from ancient cultures to the challenges of the 21st century, each with its introduction and conclusions written by the editors. The authors represent such disciplines as history of technology, history of public health, public policy, development studies, sociology, engineering and management sciences. This book emphasizes that the history of water and sanitation services is strongly linked to current water management and policy issues, as well as future implications. Geographically the book consists of local cases from all inhabited continents. The key penetrating themes of the book include especially population growth, health, water consumption, technological choices and governance. There is great need for general, long-term analysis at the global level. Lessons learned from earlier societies help us to understand the present crisis and challenges. This new book, Environmental History of Water, provides this analysis by studying these lessons.
Download or read book Christianity and Global Law written by Rafael Domingo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores both historical and contemporary Christian sources and dimensions of global law and includes critical perspectives from various religious and philosophical traditions. Two dozen leading scholars discuss the constituent principles of this new global legal order historically, comparatively, and currently. The first part uses a historical-biographical approach to study a few of the major Christian architects of global law and transnational legal theory, from St. Paul to Jacques Maritain. The second part distills the deep Christian sources and dimensions of the main principles of global law, historically and today, separating out the distinct Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox Christian contributions as appropriate. Finally, the authors address a number of pressing global issues and challenges, where a Christian-informed legal perspective can and should have deep purchase and influence. The work makes no claim that Christianity is the only historical shaper of global law, nor that it should monopolize the theory and practice of global law today. But the book does insist that Christianity, as one of the world’s great religions, has deep norms and practices, ideas and institutions, prophets and procedures that can be of benefit as the world struggles to find global legal resources to confront humanity’s greatest challenges. The volume will be an essential resource for academics and researchers working in the areas of law and religion, transnational law, legal philosophy, and legal history.

Book excerpt: The inscriptions found in the excavations at Corinth between 1926 and 1950 are published here which, although fragmentary, provide significant new evidence for the history of Greece in the Roman period. Here the Greek texts before 44 B.C. number only 49; the bulk of the volume deals with 451 texts, both Greek and Latin, of the Roman Imperial period, 220 Greek texts of the Late Roman and Early Byzantine period and 17 after A.D. 800. Text, translation, and commentary are offered for each inscription and a general introduction to each period summarizes the historical information yielded by the texts and includes lists of the names of those who held various Roman offices.

Download or read book The Entry of the Slavs Into Christendom written by A. P. Vlasto and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1970-10-02 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Vlasto reviews the early history of the various Slav peoples (from about AD 500 onwards) and traces their gradual emergence as Christian states within the framework of either West or East European culture. Special attention is paid to the political and cultural rivalry between East and West for the allegiance of certain Slav peoples, and to the degree of cultural exchange within the Slav world, associated in particular with the use of the Slav liturgical language. His examination of all the Slav peoples and extensive use of original source material in many different languages enables Dr Vlasto to give a particularly comprehensive study of the subject.
