Download or read book Unselfing written by Michaela Hulstyn and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2022-08-31 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Altered states of consciousness – including experiences of deprivation, pain, hallucination, fear, desire, alienation, and spiritual transcendence – can transform the ordinary experience of selfhood. Unselfing explores the nature of disruptive self-experiences and the different shapes they have taken in literary writing. The book focuses on the tension between rival conceptions of unselfing as either a form of productive self-transcendence or a form of alienating self-loss. Michaela Hulstyn explores the shapes and meanings of unselfing through the framework of the global French literary world, encompassing texts by modernist figures in France and Belgium alongside writers from Algeria, Rwanda, and Morocco. Together these diverse texts prompt a re-evaluation of the consequences of the loss or the transcendence of the self. Through a series of close readings, Hulstyn offers a new account of the ethical questions raised by altered states and shows how philosophies of empathy can be tested against and often challenged by literary works. Drawing on cognitive science and phenomenology, Unselfing provides a new methodology for approaching texts that give shape to the fringes of conscious experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of a dialogue between poets and scholars on the meaning and making of the sacred, this book endeavours to determine how the sacred emerges in sacred script as well as in poetic discourse. It ranges through scholarship in areas as apparently disparate as postmodernism and Buddhism. The perspectives developed are various and without closure, locating the sacred in modes as diverse as patristic traditions, feminist retranslations of biblical texts, and oral and written versions of documents from the world’s religions. The essays cohere in their preoccupation with the crucial role language plays in the creation of the sacred, particularly in the relation that language bears to silence. In their interplay, language does not silence silence by, rather, calls the other as sacred into articulate existence.

Download or read book Feminist Research written by Peta Tancred-Sheriff and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1988-10-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The six parts of Feminist Research: Prospect and Retrospect parallel the female life cycle, highlighting themes such as the increasing power of medical definitions of female experience - including conception, pregnancy, childbirth - and the nature of depression in women. New perspectives are offered on the specificity of the female approach to both learning and teaching and are emphasized in considering problems such as dealing with alcohol abuse and wife-battering. For example, Margaret Eichler opens the initial section, "Reproduction and Maternity," with an analysis of the new reproductive technologies. Making use of interviews and quantitative material, Ann Quénairt and Jane Gordon take up the theme of the medicalization of reproduction, suggesting that it has encouraged women to see the foetus as taking priority over the needs of the mother during pregnancy. This section is completed by Martin Thomas' interesting approach to gender distribution. Feminist Research: Prospect and Retrospect offers a thorough look at the problems of women today, suggesting that society is encountering a period of strong reaction to the feminist movement of the late sixties and early seventies. Marguerite Anderson argues that only the "dynamite of research" will allow construction of a positive route forward. This collection includes essays in both English and French.

Book excerpt: While imported Chinese porcelain had become a valuable commodity in Europe in the seventeenth century, local attempts to produce porcelain long remained unsuccessful. At last the secret of hard-paste porcelain was uncovered, and in 1710 the first European porcelain was manufactured in Saxony. Meissen porcelain, still manufactured today, soon ranked in value with silver and gold. This thorough and lavishly illustrated volume explores the early years of Meissen porcelain and how the princes of Saxony came to use highly prized porcelain pieces as diplomatic gifts for presentation to foreign courts. An eminent team of international contributors examines the trade of Meissen with other nations, from England to Russia. They also investigate the cultural ambience of the Dresden Court, varying tastes of the markets, the wide range of porcelain objects, and their designers and makers. Individual chapters are devoted to gifts to Denmark, other German courts, the Holy Roman Empire, Italy, France, and other nations. For every Meissen collector or enthusiast, this book will be not only a treasured handbook but also a source of visual delight.
