Book The Quest for the Rusyn Soul

Download or read book The Quest for the Rusyn Soul written by Keith P. Dyrud and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conversion to Orthodoxy meant adopting the Russian cultural identity. Subcarpathian Rusyn conversions to Orthodoxy triggered a reaction from the Hungarian government - which viewed Russian Orthodoxy as a dimension of Russian imperialism and a threat to the Magyarization of the Rusyns. The Austro-Hungarian government petitioned the Pope to establish the Greek Catholic Rite in North America. As Europe was being divided into two belligerent camps prior to World War I, the Russian and the Austro-Hungarian empires were engaged in covert attempts to win the allegiance of the people living in the contested area. This imperial competition followed the subject peoples to the United States where the competition was complicated by the opposing interests of the Latin bishops who had no interest in European conflicts but a great interest in establishing a uniform American Latin Catholicism.

Book excerpt: Catholics are not Christians. They worship Mary. They do whatever the pope says. They cannot divorce. They eat fish on Fridays. These flawed but common statements reflect a combined ignorance of and fascination with Catholicism and the Catholic Church. Catholicism Today: An Introduction to the Contemporary Catholic Church aims to familiarize its readers with contemporary Catholicism. The book is designed to address common misconceptions and frequently-asked questions regarding the Church, its teachings, and the lived experience of Catholics in modern societies worldwide. Opening with a concise historical overview of Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular, the text explores the core beliefs and rituals that define Catholicism in practice, the organization of the Church and the Catholic calendar, as well as the broad question of what it means to be Catholic in a variety of cultural contexts. The book ends with a discussion of the challenges facing the Church both now and in the coming decades. Also included are two short appendices on Eastern Catholicism and Catholicism in the United States.

Book When Brothers Dwell in Unity

Download or read book When Brothers Dwell in Unity written by Stephen Morris and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the world of early Byzantine Christianity, monastic rules acknowledged but discouraged the homosexual impulses of adult males. What most disturbed monastic leaders was adolescent males being accepted as novices; adult men were considered unable to control their sexual desires for these "beautiful boys." John Chrysostom, the Archbishop of Constantinople (397-407), virulently denounced homosexuality, but was virtually the only Byzantine cleric to do so. Penances traditionally attached to heterosexual sins--including remarriage after divorce or widowhood--have always been much more severe than those for a variety of homosexual acts or relationships. Just as Byzantine churches have found ways to accommodate sequential marriages and other behavior once stridently condemned, this book argues, it is possible for Byzantine Christianity to make pastoral accommodations for gay relationships and same-sex marriage.
