Book excerpt: "Byron Corner-crosswalks and crossroads" is a collection of poems, thoughts and photographs collected over the past 50 or so years. It's that part of my being that I'm leaving behind. This is who I am when I'm alone, which is most of the time. Time spent with my best friend, myself. Other works, of fiction, that I have penned are special, nice and it is important to me that they are liked and appreciated. This work is my soul exposed. I read it and re-read it, smile, laugh and cry. It is the most important work of literature in my life. Although I hope you like, enjoy, and can feel my heart, my passion, my raison d'etre, it is ok if you dislike or disagree with it. It is important to me that you read it! I am the photographer behind the majority of the photographs

Book excerpt: Syndey Vail, once a beautiful soap opera star, enters lawyer-cum-detective Shep Harrington's life in a cloud of dust and vanishes just as quickly, leaving behind two very different but strangely connected things: a chimpanzee and a murder. The chimpanzee is the young Kikora, whom Sydney liberated from her confining cage in a testing lab at DMI a mega-medical conglomerate led by the hard-driving Howard Doring, who apparently believes that the human animal has every right to exploit all living things. The murder victim, killed by a blow to the head, is Dr. Celia Stone, the DMI researcher in charge of Kikora. Soon Shep realizes that Kikora, left in his initially unwilling care, is not only stolen property, but the longer he keeps her, the more threatened his own freedom becomes and the more often tough questions race through his head. What makes an animal property? What is the source of human rights? What about an animal whose only difference from humans is 1.6% of DNA, that can empathize and suffer like humans? The questions confuse Shep, who's never had to think hard about them before. And the only answers he seems to find lie in the big brown eyes of a chimp called Kikora.

Book Byron and Hobby O

Download or read book Byron and Hobby O written by Peter Cochran and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Byron and Hobby-O is about the relationship between Byron and his supposed best friend, John Cam Hobhouse. It is the first full-length biographical study of Hobhouse in over fifty years, and is much franker and more intimate than anything preceding. It shows how, while the two men were initially collaborators and rivals, Byron rapidly outstretched Hobhouse in poetry, while Hobhouse, in the longer term, outstretched Byron in politics. It shows how long acquaintance with the elusive and chameleonic Byron turned Hobhouse into a canter and humbug of the kind Byron hated, and concludes with an account of the first English invasion of Afghanistan, which Hobhouse initiated. The book is based in part on long study of Hobhouse’s diary, much of which Peter Cochran has edited.

Book Aspects of Byron s Don Juan

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Cochran
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2014-10-16
  • ISBN : 1443868981
  • Pages : 525 pages

Download or read book Aspects of Byron s Don Juan written by Peter Cochran and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aspects of Byron’s Don Juan is, in part, a proceedings volume from the 2012 conference held by the Newstead Byron Society at Nottingham Trent University. Speakers represented in the book include Malcolm Kelsall, Peter Cochran, Diego Saglia and Itsuyo Higashinaka. Topics range from the politics of Don Juan, and its treatment of women, to its comic rhymes. One section is devoted to the poem’s importance in the literatures of Spain and Russia, another to the vast catalogue of Byron’s prose sources (from cannibalism to cookery books), and a final section to the important role played by Mary Shelley in copying most of the poem for the printer. The editor’s introduction describes the enormous literary tradition of which Don Juan forms a vital continuation, from Pulci’s Morgante Maggiore, via Rabelais, Cervantes, and Montaigne, to the novelists Sterne, Smollett and Fielding, all of whom Byron adored. Another chapter concerns the differing ways in which Don Juan has been treated by other artists, from Tirso de Molina, via E. T. A. Hoffman, to Johnny Depp.
