Former U.S. Customs Enforcement Agent, Michael Callaway, has plenty of free time on his hands to figure out what she’s up to, since an enormous lottery payout let him quit the job he was just about to be fired from. The drug kingpin Carrie’s working for is Anton Drake. Expatriated Englishman. Former Royal Navy Commander. Corrupter of the Bahamian government. Maker and smuggler of cocaine. Ruthless killer. Pure evil. As a DEA agent, Carrie always had a deadly grudge against drug dealers. Did she sell out, or does she have a good reason to go from law enforcer to law breaker? Michael’s determined to figure out how Drake’s moving drugs from his private island. And just because Carrie’s his ex doesn’t mean Michael stopped caring about her. Michael’s always done things by the book. But in a deadly race for their lives, maybe it’s time to throw the book away.

Book Information Modelling for Archaeology and Anthropology

Download or read book Information Modelling for Archaeology and Anthropology written by Cesar Gonzalez-Perez and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique text/reference reviews the key principles and techniques in conceptual modelling which are of relevance to specialists in the field of cultural heritage. Information modelling tasks are a vital aspect of work and study in such disciplines as archaeology, anthropology, history, and architecture. Yet the concepts and methods behind information modelling are rarely covered by the training in cultural heritage-related fields. With the increasing popularity of the digital humanities, and the rapidly growing need to manage large and complex datasets, the importance of information modelling in cultural heritage is greater than ever before. To address this need, this book serves in the place of a course on software engineering, assuming no previous knowledge of the field. Topics and features: Presents a general philosophical introduction to conceptual modelling Introduces the basics of conceptual modelling, using the ConML language as an infrastructure Reviews advanced modelling techniques relating to issues of vagueness, temporality and subjectivity, in addition to such topics as metainformation and feature redefinition Proposes an ontology for cultural heritage supported by the Cultural Heritage Abstract Reference Model (CHARM), to enable the easy construction of conceptual models Describes various usage scenarios and applications of cultural heritage modelling, offering practical tips on how to use different techniques to solve real-world problems This interdisciplinary work is an essential primer for tutors and students (at both undergraduate and graduate level) in any area related to cultural heritage, including archaeology, anthropology, art, history, architecture, or literature. Cultural heritage managers, researchers, and professionals will also find this to be a valuable reference, as will anyone involved in database design, data management, or the conceptualization of cultural heritage in general. Dr. Cesar Gonzalez-Perez is a Staff Scientist at the Institute of Heritage Sciences (Incipit), within the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

Book excerpt: The Quiet Center presents the core of Dr. John Lilly’s groundbreaking isolation experiments, edited into an accessible format for a new generation to embrace the revolutionary thinking of this fascinating scientist. It is a book that distills the essence of Dr. Lilly’s philosophies—higher consciousness, the varieties of isolation experience, heightened awareness—and minimizes the scientific jargon to make his theories and examples accessible to the general reader who is searching for heightened conscious experience and serene self-awareness. As a pioneer in the research of animal intelligence, altered states of consciousness and isolation tank experiments, Lilly, like his peers Timothy Leary, Alan Watts, Carlos Casteneda and Charles Tart, can and should be read by a whole new generation seeking to extend his ideas that blend science and philosophy as a means to see new truths to themselves and to seek shelter from the onslaught of external stimuli in today’s society. Whether the reader can use an actual tank or devises their own "isolation space," The Quiet Center is the first word in isolation therapy for the new millennium.

Book Knowledge Discovery in Databases PKDD 2005

Download or read book Knowledge Discovery in Databases PKDD 2005 written by Alípio Jorge and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-11-07 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Conference on Machine Learning (ECML) and the European Conference on Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (PKDD) were jointly organized this year for the ?fth time in a row, after some years of mutual independence before. After Freiburg (2001), Helsinki (2002), Cavtat (2003) and Pisa (2004), Porto received the 16th edition of ECML and the 9th PKDD in October 3–7. Having the two conferences together seems to be working well: 585 di?erent paper submissions were received for both events, which maintains the high s- mission standard of last year. Of these, 335 were submitted to ECML only, 220 to PKDD only and 30 to both. Such a high volume of scienti?c work required a tremendous e?ort from Area Chairs, Program Committee members and some additional reviewers. On average, PC members had 10 papers to evaluate, and Area Chairs had 25 papers to decide upon. We managed to have 3 highly qua- ?edindependentreviewsperpaper(withveryfewexceptions)andoneadditional overall input from one of the Area Chairs. After the authors’ responses and the online discussions for many of the papers, we arrived at the ?nal selection of 40 regular papers for ECML and 35 for PKDD. Besides these, 32 others were accepted as short papers for ECML and 35 for PKDD. This represents a joint acceptance rate of around 13% for regular papers and 25% overall. We thank all involved for all the e?ort with reviewing and selection of papers. Besidesthecoretechnicalprogram,ECMLandPKDDhad6invitedspeakers, 10 workshops, 8 tutorials and a Knowledge Discovery Challenge.

Book Word by Word

Download or read book Word by Word written by Kory Stamper and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “We think of English as a fortress to be defended, but a better analogy is to think of English as a child. We love and nurture it into being, and once it gains gross motor skills, it starts going exactly where we don’t want it to go: it heads right for the goddamned electrical sockets.” With wit and irreverence, lexicographer Kory Stamper cracks open the obsessive world of dictionary writing, from the agonizing decisions about what to define and how to do it to the knotty questions of ever-changing word usage. Filled with fun facts—for example, the first documented usage of “OMG” was in a letter to Winston Churchill—and Stamper’s own stories from the linguistic front lines (including how she became America’s foremost “irregardless” apologist, despite loathing the word), Word by Word is an endlessly entertaining look at the wonderful complexities and eccentricities of the English language.

Book The Universities of the Italian Renaissance

Download or read book The Universities of the Italian Renaissance written by Paul F. Grendler and published by Johns Hopkins University Press+ORM. This book was released on 2004-11-03 with total page 1050 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “magisterial [and] elegantly written” study of Renaissance Italy’s remarkable accomplishments in higher education and academic research (Choice). Winner of the Howard R. Marraro Prize for Italian History from the American Historical Association Selected by Choice Magazine as an Outstanding Academic Title of the Year Italian Renaissance universities were Europe's intellectual leaders in humanistic studies, law, medicine, philosophy, and science. Employing some of the foremost scholars of the time—including Pietro Pomponazzi, Andreas Vesalius, and Galileo Galilei—the Italian Renaissance university was the prototype of today's research university. This is the first book in any language to offer a comprehensive study of this most influential institution. Noted scholar Paul F. Grendler offers a detailed and authoritative account of the universities of Renaissance Italy. Beginning with brief narratives of the origins and development of each university, Grendler explores such topics as the number of professors and their distribution by discipline; student enrollment (some estimates are the first attempted); famous faculty members; budgets and salaries; and relations with civil authority. He discusses the timetable of lectures, student living, foreign students, the road to the doctorate, and the impact of the Counter Reformation. He shows in detail how humanism changed research and teaching, producing the medical Renaissance of anatomy and medical botany, new approaches to Aristotle, and mathematical innovation. Universities responded by creating new professorships and suppressing older ones. The book concludes with the decline of Italian universities, as internal abuses and external threats—including increased student violence and competition from religious schools—ended Italy’s educational leadership in the seventeenth century.
