Book excerpt: Excerpt from By-Paths in the Balkans Any of the impressions and incidents M recorded in the following pages were not of my seeking - were, indeed, at the time unwelcome visitations. During a sixteen months' journey in the Balkan countries, 1903 to 1905, my money-supply suddenly and unexpectedly ran out, in places were a replenish ment would have been impossible, even if I had been a Croesus, and owing to circumstances which not the most acute prophet could have foreseen. And when at last, as the result of a reckless adventure, I had obtained a sufficiency to con tinne my journey, I became the victim of a cruel robbery, which deprived me, for the second time, of all that I then possessed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secrets of the Balkans: Seven Years of a Diplomatist's Life in the Storm Centre of Europe But the blow came from without; the hand of tyranny was raised against a people whose freedom had been bought with their own blood. The World War began in the Balkans, yet its origin was in the hearts of the unscrupulous autocrats whose ruthless ambi tion knew neither justice nor limit; who counted the subjection of a free people merely as the first move in the game to win commercial and political supremacy, and in the end, to dominate the world. Serbia was only a pawn, to be swept aside as the first obstacle in the path of world conquest. This, then, is the story of the Balkanic Nations, from the earliest times, dealing brie y with the many centuries of invasion, oppression and continual fighting for liberty, and dwelling in detail on the heroic struggle in the great cataclysm, when their lands were again coveted as spoils of war. In the narration is revealed intimate and positive knowledge of cause and effect, events and conditions, gained in seven years of constant and close association with rulers and subjects, in the full confidence that is born only of companionship in af iction. Download or read book Entangled Paths Towards Modernity written by Augusta Dimou and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an important and innovative comparative study of socialist movements and regimes of modernization in the Balkans, encompassing Serbian populism, Bulgarian social democracy and Greek communism. It makes an original contribution both to the history of political ideas and to the political sociology of radical and socialist movements. It provides a fascinating account of the transplantation of ideologies that were adopted from Western Europe and from Russia into the very different environment of the Balkans, and traces their adaptation and their reception in this new environment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Residence in Greece and Turkey, Vol. 1 of 2: With Notes of the Journey Through Bulgaria, Servia, Hungary, and the Balkan Constantinople to Calais, or leap from the Archi pelago to the other extremity of the Mediterra nean, from thence cross the English or Irish channel, as caprice may dictate, with a rapidity infinitely surpassing any travelling yet performed by steam boats, steam carriages, or even balloons and above all, I must'beg of the reader never to expect that because I set out for any given place, that I should probably arrive at the stated desti nation; for such has ever been my uncalculating want of foresight, that even by that most straight forward mode of travelling, the stage coach, with a genius peculiar to myself, for erring and straying from the right path, I have contrived to enter or mount the wrong vehicle, and after having pro ceeded some miles on a false tack, have at length discovered that I was at fault, by the conversation of the passengers, or some other circumstance, which has happily occurred to enlighten me in my devious course; and in embarking on board a vessel bound for a certain port, however the ship may arrive at its wished-for harbour, it by no means follows that I should arrive with it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Balkan Log It was October 1914, and the bond of a common danger, common hope drew us together in a wonderful mutual understanding. In the mornings we, the British, did physical jerks on the well-deck, watched by the passengers from the promenade above; in the afternoons our men were lectured on their duties to the sick and wounded; in the evenings, under the Mediterranean stars, everyone sang patriotic songs, the Marseillaise, God save the King, and Tipperary - always Tipperary. At all hours everyone talked to everyone else, the barrier of language acting rather as a stimulus to effort. It was a marvellously glowing time, you will remember, October 1914, a time of tense emotion, intoxicating, fervorous, star-gazing. How far away it all seems now. We were happy, as I have said, until we reached the Piraeus and the family began to break up. There also, for the first time, we began to come in contact with people who were critical, unsympathetic, even hostile to our common cause, people who looked at us and judged, from the outside. Book Archaeologists in Print

Download or read book Archaeologists in Print written by Amara Thornton and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2018-06-25 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeologists in Print is a history of popular publishing in archaeology in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a pivotal period of expansion and development in both archaeology and publishing. It examines how British archaeologists produced books and popular periodical articles for a non-scholarly audience, and explores the rise in archaeologists’ public visibility. Notably, it analyses women’s experiences in archaeology alongside better known male contemporaries as shown in their books and archives. In the background of this narrative is the history of Britain’s imperial expansion and contraction, and the evolution of modern tourism in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. Archaeologists exploited these factors to gain public and financial support and interest, and build and maintain a reading public for their work, supported by the seasonal nature of excavation and tourism. Reinforcing these publishing activities through personal appearances in the lecture hall, exhibition space and site tour, and in new media – film, radio and television – archaeologists shaped public understanding of archaeology. It was spadework, scripted. The image of the archaeologist as adventurous explorer of foreign lands, part spy, part foreigner, eternally alluring, solidified during this period. That legacy continues, undimmed, today. Praise for Archaeologists in Print This beautifully written book will be valued by all kinds of readers: you don't need to be an archaeologist to enjoy the contents, which take you through different publishing histories of archaeological texts and the authors who wrote them. From the productive partnership of travel guide with archaeological interest, to the women who feature so often in the history of archaeological publishing, via closer analysis of the impact of John Murray, Macmillan and Co, and Penguin, this volume excavates layers of fascinating facts that reveal much of the wider culture of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The prose is clear and the stories compulsive: Thornton brings to life a cast of people whose passion for their profession lives again in these pages. Warning: the final chapter, on Archaeological Fictions, will fill your to-be-read list with stacks of new titles to investigate! This is a highly readable, accessible exploration into the dynamic relationships between academic authors, publishers, and readers. It is, in addition, an exemplar of how academic research can attract a wide general readership, as well as a more specialised one: a stellar combination of rigorous scholarship with lucid, pacy prose. Highly recommended!' Samantha Rayner, Director of UCL Centre for Publishing; Deputy Head of Department and Director of Studies, Department of Information Studies, UCL

Download or read book The Balkan Route written by Florian Riedler and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume approaches the topic of mobility in Southeast Europe by offering the first detailed historical study of the land route connecting Istanbul with Belgrade. After this route that diagonally crosses Southeast Europe had been established in Roman times, it was as important for the Byzantines as the Ottomans to rule their Balkan territories. In the nineteenth century, the road was upgraded to a railroad and, most recently, to a motorway. The contributions in this volume focus on the period from the Middle Ages to the present day. They explore the various transformations of the route as well as its transformative role for the cities and regions along its course. This not only concerns the political function of the route to project the power of the successive empires. Also the historical actors such as merchants, travelling diplomats, Turkish guest workers or Middle Eastern refugees together with the various social, economic and cultural effects of their mobility are in the focus of attention. The overall aim is to gain a deeper understanding of Southeast Europe by foregrounding historical continuities and disruptions from a long-term perspective and by bringing into dialogue different national and regional approaches.

Download or read book Romani Routes written by Carol Silverman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-24 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now that the political and economic plight of European Roma and the popularity of their music are objects of international attention, Romani Routes provides a timely and insightful view into Romani communities both in their home countries and in the diaspora. Over the past two decades, a steady stream of recordings, videos, feature films, festivals, and concerts has presented the music of Balkan Gypsies, or Roma, to Western audiences, who have greeted them with exceptional enthusiasm. Yet, as author Carol Silverman notes, Roma are revered as musicians and reviled as people. In this book, Silverman introduces readers to the people and cultures who produce this music, offering a sensitive and incisive analysis of how Romani musicians address the challenges of discrimination. Focusing on southeastern Europe then moving to the diaspora, her book examines the music within Romani communities, the lives and careers of outstanding musicians, and the marketing of music in the electronic media and "world music" concert circuit. Silverman touches on the way that the Roma exemplify many qualities -- adaptability, cultural hybridity, transnationalism--that are taken to characterize late modern experience. And rather than just celebrating these qualities, she presents the musicians as complicated, pragmatic individuals who work creatively within the many constraints that inform their lives.

Book excerpt: Normalizing the Balkans argues that, following the historical patterns of colonial psychoanalysis and psychiatry in British India and French Africa as well as Nazi psychoanalysis and psychiatry, the psychoanalysis and psychiatry of the Balkans during the 1990s deployed the language of psychic normality to represent the space of the Other as insane geography and to justify its military, or its symbolic, takeover. Freud's self-analysis, influenced by his journeys through the Balkans, was a harbinger of orientalism as articulated by Said. However, whereas Said intended Orientalism to be a criti.
