Book excerpt: The Great Depression was defined by poverty and despair, but visionary American filmmaker Busby Berkeley (1895-1976) managed to divert the public's attention away from the economic crash with some of the most iconic movies of all time. Known for his kaleidoscopic dance numbers featuring multitudes of performers in extravagant costumes, his musicals provided a brief respite for an audience whose reality was hard and bitter. Buzz: The Life and Art of Busby Berkeley is a revealing study of the director, drawing from interviews with his colleagues, newspaper and legal records, and Berkeley's own unpublished memoirs to uncover the life of a Hollywood legend renowned for his talent and creativity. Jeffrey Spivak examines how Berkeley's career evolved from creating musical numbers for other directors in films such as 42nd Street (1933) and Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933) to directing his own pictures, such as Strike up the Band (1940) and The Gang's All Here (1943). Though Berkeley claimed he was no choreographer, his movies revitalized the public's waning interest in musical pictures. While other popular filmmakers advertised their works specifically as nonmusical, Berkeley embraced his niche, eventually becoming the premier dance director of his time. However, the happy face Berkeley presented publicly did not necessarily reflect his life. Offstage and away from the set, the director met with scandal, and his fondness for liquor and women was well known. In September 1935, he was involved in a car accident that left three people dead and four others severely injured. Accused of driving under the influence, he was put on trial for second-degree murder. The accident significantly changed the nature of his stardom.

Book excerpt: Slash is book 1 of the Savage Hearts MC trilogy. Books 2 and 3, Slash and Burn and Slash and Dominate are available everywhere now! I sold him my innocence. I just never thought he'd claim it like this. Brutal. Savage. Reckless. Wild. But there's no denying the truth: The bad boy owns me now. ERIN I'm in over my head. It just got out of control. And before I could stop it, things were happening that I was powerless to stop. I was on stage, barely dressed, while strange men offered cash bounties that made my jaw drop. Then a voice came out of the back that cut through the chaos and froze my blood in my veins. He said he'd own me… Whatever the cost. And that's when this nightmare truly began. Because the man who bought me is the devil incarnate. Slash is a bona fide killer, a ruthless biker bad boy with the ink and leather to match. His motorcycle roars like some demon from below. And those eyes… So hungry. So cruel. From the moment the door shut and we were alone together, I knew that this could end only one way: With me on my knees, begging the bad boy to own me. SLASH There are enough bodies in my past to fill a morgue. Enough blood on my hands that I'll never truly be rid of it. I've sinned, I've killed, I've broken people and left them to suffer in the darkness and the silence. But it was all for the club. All of it – everything I've ever done – was in the name of the Savage Hearts MC. Until now. This time, my sins are for me and me alone. Because when I saw the girl on the stage, I knew I couldn't rest until I'd made her mine. Every woman in my past was nothing more than a toy to me. But Erin… She lit a fire I didn't know I had. It won't be enough to use her and throw her aside. I need to take her senseless, then put her on the back of my chopper and ride into the sunset. F**k all this chaos. F**k all this war. I'll brand this woman and put my baby in her so the whole damn world knows to keep their filthy hands off. But the underworld where I've spent my whole life isn't so eager to let us escape. There are men here who would love to see my head on a spike. Along with the heads of everyone I've ever cared about. And when they find out about the girl I've brought into my home… They know I'm vulnerable now. That's when they come for us. So be it. Let them. I'm ready for one final war. And I'll slay them all to protect what's mine.

Book Naked Seeing

Download or read book Naked Seeing written by Christopher Hatchell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buddhism is in many ways a visual tradition, with its well-known practices of visualization, its visual arts, its epistemological writings that discuss the act of seeing, and its literature filled with images and metaphors of light. Some Buddhist traditions are also visionary, advocating practices by which meditators seek visions that arise before their eyes. Naked Seeing investigates such practices in the context of two major esoteric traditions, the Wheel of Time (Kalacakra) and the Great Perfection (Dzogchen). Both of these experimented with sensory deprivation, and developed yogas involving long periods of dwelling in dark rooms or gazing at the open sky. These produced unusual experiences of seeing, which were used to pursue some of the classic Buddhist questions about appearances, emptiness, and the nature of reality. Along the way, these practices gave rise to provocative ideas and suggested that, rather than being apprehended through internal insight, religious truths might also be seen in the exterior world-realized through the gateway of the eyes. Christopher Hatchell presents the intellectual and literary histories of these practices, and also explores the meditative techniques and physiology that underlie their distinctive visionary experiences. The book also offers for the first time complete English translations of three major Tibetan texts on visionary practice: a Kalacakra treatise by Yumo Mikyo Dorj , The Lamp Illuminating Emptiness, a Nyingma Great Perfection work called The Tantra of the Blazing Lamps, and a B n Great Perfection work called Advice on the Six Lamps, along with a detailed commentary on this by Drugom Gyalwa Yungdrung.

Book Singing with the Mountains

Download or read book Singing with the Mountains written by William Sherman and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illuminating story of a Sufi community that sought the revelation of God. In the Afghan highlands of the sixteenth century, the messianic community known as the Roshaniyya not only desired to find God’s word and to abide by it but also attempted to practice God’s word and to develop techniques of language intended to render their own tongues as the organs of continuous revelation. As their critics would contend, however, the Roshaniyya attempted to make language do something that language should not do—infuse the semiotic with the divine. Their story thus ends in a tower of skulls, the proliferation of heresiographies that detailed the sins of the Roshaniyya, and new formations of “Afghan” identity. In Singing with the Mountains, William E. B. Sherman finds something extraordinary about the Roshaniyya, not least because the first known literary use of vernacular Pashto occurs in an eclectic, Roshani imitation of the Qur’an. The story of the Roshaniyya exemplifies a religious culture of linguistic experimentation. In the example of the Roshaniyya, we discover a set of questions and anxieties about the capacities of language that pervaded Sufi orders, imperial courts, groups of wandering ascetics, and scholastic networks throughout Central and South Asia. In telling this tale, Sherman asks the following questions: How can we make language shimmer with divine truth? How can letters grant sovereign power and form new “ethnic” identities and ways of belonging? How can rhyme bend our conceptions of time so that the prophetic past comes to inhabit the now of our collective moment? By analyzing the ways in which the Roshaniyya answered these types of questions—and the ways in which their answers were eventually rejected as heresies—this book offers new insight into the imaginations of religious actors in the late medieval and early modern Persianate worlds.
