Download or read book Another Last Call written by Cheryl Terra and published by Bang It Out Writing. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One small town. Two childhood friends. Ten years later, will an attempt to save the local bar be their last call for love? MAGGIE The bar was my legacy. It was all I had to look forward to: a lonely life waiting tables in a small town and dumping beer on the tourists who got a little too forward. Though, as the current owner of the bar, Mom didn't exactly approve of the beer-dumping thing. But it wasn't my fault they were pigs. Maybe if I'd listened to her, things would have gone better. Because then he came back. Just in time to see everything around me crumble. And he's the last person I want to get help from. CALEB The cabin was my inheritance. Not money or heirlooms. Just a rundown cabin in Marble Beach made even shoddier by the luxurious lake houses that surrounded it. Typical Dad. Everything had to be a lesson with him. I thought that was the last lesson he was trying to teach me: turning what I had into what I wanted. Take the cabin and spruce it up, then sell it so I could use the money to start my business like I'd planned. But I was wrong. She was my lesson. But would she be my reward? Based on the original award-winning novella The Last Time, this second chance small town romance between a surly waitress and the man who returns to her life ten years after they had their first time together has been revamped as a 50K novel. It features plenty of steamy scenes and passionate drama. Please see book preview for potential content warnings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when a snarky hitman and a by-the-book PI cross paths? Leland Being a hitman has its perks, but I never thought getting an accidental mooning by an attractive PI while he's caught on a fence would be one of them. While it's not exactly love at first sight, he's captured my interest and won't let go.Suddenly, I find myself caught in a game of cat and mouse, determined to attract the attention of Jackson, the PI who should be my enemy. He pretends like he's not flattered by my flowers and the mentions of my totally-not-fictitious blow-up doll Randy (or was it Dandy?), but I know better. Why else would he be teaming up with me to bring down Hardek, one of the city's most ruthless criminals? JacksonEven though the cops are telling me that the hitman is a notorious contract killer, I can't help but admit that I'm drawn to him. He's funny, charismatic, and attractive. There's no way this ridiculous man can be the person the cops are after. But when Leland ends up at my doorstep injured, I'm faced with a tough choice. It's my duty to hand him over to law enforcement, but my heart has other plans. I want to keep him. To protect him. To be with him. Though one question remains: why in the world does the man have so many d*mn guns?Contains: shenanigans on a swing that you would NOT find at a playground, a car chase that sadly doesn't have flips or explosions, a horsey ride sans horse, cuddles, an exuberant mutt, a suspicious chief of police, and lots and lots of laughs.

Download or read book The Story of the Amulet written by E. Nesbit and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2021-04-01T23:31:22Z with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this conclusion to the Psammead Trilogy, Cyril, Anthea, Robert, and Jane are reunited with the cantankerous Sand-fairy. While the old creature can’t grant them wishes anymore, it points them towards an old Egyptian amulet that can grant their hearts’ desire—in this case the return of their parents and baby brother. While their amulet is only half of a whole, it still acts as a time portal which they use to visit locales like Ancient Egypt, Babylon, Atlantis, and even a utopian future in search of the missing other half. Perhaps one of E. Nesbit’s most personal works, The Story of the Amulet benefited from her interest in the ancient world, particularly Egypt. With the help of A. E. Wallis Budge, to whom the book is dedicated—then Head of the Assyrian Departments of the British Museum and translator of the Egyptian Book of the Dead—she conducted extensive research on the topic and is thus able to bring an exquisite attention to detail. For example, the titular amulet is shaped after the tyet, an Egyptian symbol also known as the “knot of Isis.” Likewise, the inscription at the back of the amulet is written in authentic Egyptian hieroglyphs. A staunch supporter of democratic socialism and a founding member of the Fabian Society, E. Nesbit cultivated friendships with other like-minded writers, such as George Bernard Shaw and H. G. Wells, whose influence on this book is easy to notice. She practiced what she preached, so much so that despite her literary successes, her acts of charity brought her close to bankruptcy. These political beliefs are prominently displayed in the book. The children encounter memorable characters during their adventures, chief among them the Queen of Babylon, who causes quite a stir when she later pays them a call in their contemporary London. When the visiting Queen witnesses the squalid living conditions of the London working class, she’s amazed at how poorly they’re treated compared to the slaves of her own Babylon. Likewise, the utopian future—which features a wink to her friend H. G. Wells, the “great reformer”—is a striking contrast in terms of the happiness, care, and education of the general populace. The book’s legacy can be found in the works of other writers. Most notably, C. S. Lewis incorporated several elements in his Chronicles of Narnia: the Calormene civilization of The Horse and His Boy draws heavily from The Amulet’s Babylon, and the episode in The Magician’s Nephew where Jadis, the White Witch, causes chaos during her short stay in London is also a direct homage to the aforementioned visit from the Queen. The format of these stories, where a group of people take their audience on adventures through time and space to learn about distant cultures, is an uncanny precursor to the popular British TV series Doctor Who. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
