Book The Black Butterfly

Download or read book The Black Butterfly written by Lawrence T. Brown and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best-selling look at how American cities can promote racial equity, end redlining, and reverse the damaging health- and wealth-related effects of segregation. Winner of the IPPY Book Award Current Events II by the Independent Publisher The world gasped in April 2015 as Baltimore erupted and Black Lives Matter activists, incensed by Freddie Gray's brutal death in police custody, shut down highways and marched on city streets. In The Black Butterfly—a reference to the fact that Baltimore's majority-Black population spreads out like a butterfly's wings on both sides of the coveted strip of real estate running down the center of the city—Lawrence T. Brown reveals that ongoing historical trauma caused by a combination of policies, practices, systems, and budgets is at the root of uprisings and crises in hypersegregated cities around the country. Putting Baltimore under a microscope, Brown looks closely at the causes of segregation, many of which exist in current legislation and regulatory policy despite the common belief that overtly racist policies are a thing of the past. Drawing on social science research, policy analysis, and archival materials, Brown reveals the long history of racial segregation's impact on health, from toxic pollution to police brutality. Beginning with an analysis of the current political moment, Brown delves into how Baltimore's history influenced actions in sister cities such as St. Louis and Cleveland, as well as Baltimore's adoption of increasingly oppressive techniques from cities such as Chicago. But there is reason to hope. Throughout the book, Brown offers a clear five-step plan for activists, nonprofits, and public officials to achieve racial equity. Not content to simply describe and decry urban problems, Brown offers up a wide range of innovative solutions to help heal and restore redlined Black neighborhoods, including municipal reparations. Persuasively arguing that, since urban apartheid was intentionally erected, it can be intentionally dismantled, The Black Butterfly demonstrates that America cannot reflect that Black lives matter until we see how Black neighborhoods matter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Shining meets About a Boy in this electrifying debut about a troubled young woman and a lonely boy facing their demons in the frozen Black Hills. Emma is hitchhiking across the United States, trying to outrun a violent, tragic past, when she meets Lowell, the hot-but-dumb driver she hopes will take her as far as the Badlands. But Lowell is not as harmless as he seems, and a vicious scuffle leaves Emma bloody and stranded in an abandoned town in the Black Hills with an out-of-gas van, a loaded gun, and a snowstorm on the way. The town is eerily quiet and Emma takes shelter in a diner, where she stumbles across Earl, a strange little boy in a tinfoil mask who steals her gun before begging her to help him get rid of “George.” As she is pulled deeper into Earl’s bizarre, menacing world, the horrors of Emma’s past creep closer, and she realizes she can’t run forever. Tinfoil Butterfly is a seductively scary, chilling exploration of evil—how it sneaks in under your skin, flaring up when you least expect it, how it throttles you and won't let go. The beauty of Rachel Eve Moulton's ferocious, harrowing, and surprisingly moving debut is that it teaches us that love can do that, too.

Book The Message of Light Amid Letters of Darkness

Download or read book The Message of Light Amid Letters of Darkness written by Rosemarie Birri D'Alessandro and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-12-21 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 19, 1973, Rosemarie D'Alessandro's daughter, Joan, said "Goodbye, Mommy," as she ran out the door. Joan was a Brownie Scout, and she was excited about delivering the last two boxes of Girl Scout cookies to a neighbor. Her mother didn't know it would be the last time that she would see her seven-year-old child alive. Her neighbor sexually assaulted and brutally murdered her joyful little girl. The crime stunned the suburban community of Hillsdale, New Jersey, and the entire nation. The emphasis on child safety changed overnight. Rosemarie was numb with grief, but she was able to get some peace and solace by her belief that there was a hopeful message in the significant days Joan was killed and found. Twenty years later, when her killer shockingly had a chance to get out of prison, she started a grassroots movement and the community united together to get over one hundred thousand signatures opposing his parole. Rosemarie saw that laws had to be changed to stop the injustice that her family had to go through. Her efforts led to the passage of five laws on the state and federal level that would help to protect children and give victims more rights. An unimaginable turn of events took place when a man brought her 332 letters that Joan's killer wrote. After he died in 2021, Rosemarie felt free to share all the letters in their entirety, which gives the reader a rare opportunity to see inside the mind of a killer. In this book, The Message of Light amid Letters of Darkness, the letters are included with Rosemarie's summaries and comments, and she tells the parallel story of her life and activism during the time period the letters were written. Her story shows the power of the human spirit as Rosemarie finds a way to make something hopeful out of horrendous tragedy. She perseveres to go for what she believes in despite unexpected obstacles and hardships. She doesn't let hate and animosity take her down, freeing her to go forward and become Joan's voice. Fifty years later, Joan's legacy of hope, justice, and love shines brighter than ever.

Book BLACK COCAINE AND COLORLESS BUTTERFLIES

Download or read book BLACK COCAINE AND COLORLESS BUTTERFLIES written by Navah The Buddaphliii and published by Navah the Buddaphliii. This book was released on 2021-11 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I would like to acknowledge those who inspired me to pick up a pen and create sound, a voice. Prince Rogers Nelson, who truly needs no introduction, was a genius in the eyes of millions. Consider "Purple Rain," what an abstract concept of reality. Let's just look at the title of the band, "The Revolution", What a powerful message. -I wanted to be just like him. Prince's "Controversy" album cover had the name Joni Mitchell on it. In the late 80's, we did not have Google. I had to know who she was. No one close to me knew. After a few years went by, I came to know she was a white singer, songwriter, and AMAZING. I went and bought all the albums I could find. My favorite album of hers is called "Court in Sparks'. She taught me I didn't have to be a painter to color the world, I could color with my words, vibrant hues, wild, and free. I've always been otherworldly, a bit of a transcendentalist, even as a child. The other children would make fun of me and most of them would call me a witch. Now that I'm all grown up, I see they were right. I am truly magical, especially with a pen in my hand. Poetry is the process of transformation for the one writing it. As I write, I encourage myself to look at everything in life as a constant change. I've enjoyed the ride on my own brain waves that inspire thought provoking concepts as I fall freely into the universe of imagination. After twenty years as a writer, I finally feel my time and effort is going to pay off. I am stepping out, taking a leap of faith in the title "Black Cocaine and Colorless Butterflies". Please understand, I am not promoting the use of cocaine. I am speaking figuratively about the black struggle I witnessed growing up in a poor, black, crack-cocaine drug infested community. Cocaine did not originate where I lived. The people outside of my community had to bring it there. We all have our demons and our struggles individually and collectively. The community needed a major transformation. I wanted to be a part of the transformation. I needed to see the drugs removed once and for all. I longed for the community to shed the weight of the black struggles and generational curses that plagued us. I was ready for us to morph into the butterflies we were meant to be as a collective, void of color. Poetry is my offering; it is my contribution to society.

Book excerpt: Roma Downey--best known as the beloved angel on the TV show Touched by an Angel--has created a beautiful book filled with encouragement and hope, assuring us of God's comforting presence in our lives. Ever since she was a little girl, Roma has seen butterflies as a reminder of God's presence. They have appeared to her in moments when she needed encouragement and reminded her she is not alone. In this deeply personal book, Roma shares stories from her life, alongside quotes, poems, scripture, and artwork that she prays will uplift you as they have her. Each grace-filled chapter of this beautiful full-color book covers topics such as courage, strength, gratitude, love, and kindness. Book excerpt: Sometimes, it can feel as though we are living in the worst of times--a world of chaos, uncertainty, and breakdown. But could this also be the best of times--a crucible of change in which a wiser and more spiritually mature future is being forged? The stars are most clearly visible in the deepest darkness. The butterfly emerges out of the worst meltdown of the chrysalis. In Born to Fly, Margaret Silf helps us to explore what it would mean for each of us to be such an emerging butterfly--to be an agent of spiritual transformation in our own lives and in the world around us. What kind of future do we desire for ourselves, for those who follow after us, and for the whole of creation? And, if the choices we make today are shaping that future, how might we learn to make those choices more wisely? The second part of the book takes us on a gentle journey in five stages through the process of transformation mapped out for us by the caterpillar as it changes from a pesky garden grub, taking what it wants without regard for the rest of creation, to a butterfly, giving life wherever it lands. Born to Fly is designed to be read for personal reflection and inspiration, or alongside fellow readers, with suggestions for further discussion. It is a companion book to Margaret Silf's Hidden Wings.

Book excerpt: "Provides an archetypal frame for approaching the descent that sooner or later we all experience during dark times." – James Hollis, Ph.D., Jungian analyst and bestselling author Written by an experienced psychotherapist, Forged in Darkness encourages readers to work with archetypes in mythology to stop rejecting the darkness within and instead learn to embrace it. When we search within, we inevitably find the underworld – lost connections, failed enterprises, haunting memories, insecurities and buried secrets. This book unites self-discovery with mythology, returning the underworld to its rightful place – a dreaded realm that harbours profound transformation, richness and expansion. Using archetypes from mythology, psychotherapist Dr Joanna LaPrade teaches readers that experiences of darkness are natural and necessary markers along the path of growth and discovery. We all experience darkness, and this comprehensive and accessible guide will show readers of all ages how to embrace the shadowed parts of themselves. For millennia, cultures around the world have told myths about the underworld. It is a tragedy that the only image we have in the West is that of Hercules, requiring us to be strong and defeat the shadowed parts of our life. Forged in Darkness explores the archetype Hercules represents and turns toward other heroes and gods for models of journeying into darkness. When we question, learn to accept and make sacrifices, Odysseus is present. We acknowledge Dionysus when we reconnect with what is volcanic, unrestrained and feral. We may experience Persephone as we’re abducted from our comforts and connected to a mysterious authority within.
