Book excerpt: From the internationally bestselling author of the Mars Trilogy and New York 2140 Before Kim Stanley Robinson terraformed Mars, he wrote three science fiction novels set in Orange County, California, where he grew up. These alternate futures—one a post-apocalypse, one an if-this-goes-on future reminiscent of Philip K. Dick, and one an ecological utopia—form a whole that illuminates, enchants, and inspires--collected here as Three Californias. What if... there was a limited nuclear war that left the United States blockaded, fragmented, the few survivors living in the ruins of a once-great nation? What if... this goes on, and technology continues to accelerate, and power continues to be consolidated into corporate culture, a developer’s dream world gone mad: an endless sprawl of condos, freeways, and malls, and designer drugs? What if... a revolution happens, and the US addresses climate change in a responsible way. Is a future green Utopia all that great when you’re young and in love? This Tor Essentials edition of Three Californias includes an introduction by Francis Spufford, bestselling author of Golden Hill and Red Plenty. “[Robinson] invites us to share his characters’ intensely personal, intensely local attachment to what they have. The result may shame you into entertaining new hope for the future.” —The New York Times on Pacific Edge At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

That would be Finn Avery—not because he’s a wealthy millionaire with a mountain of gold…literally, but because all her life she’s had a crush on him. He also happens to be her best friends brother. When Emma finds herself in the small town of Dawson City, Yukon, for a second time she realizes the beauty of the wilderness has grown on her. Granted the place is a far cry from the glamorous city of Chicago. Her job was to film and produce a special story for the prominent Chicago magazine, Fashion, Flare and Style featuring a local native’s boutique. It seemed a perfect way for her to spend time with Finn. Trouble begins when Finn’s best friend and partner passes away. Finn blames himself for the death and turns away from those who care. Emma knows he cares for her, the heated moments spent together spoke the truth, but now she can’t seem to break through to him. When the pompous billionaire Marco Bishop comes parading into town offering to buy the Avery Gold Mine, Finn is furious. The man has little respect for the town and its heritage, even worse he has come to fancy Emma and is determined to have her as his next conquest. Not only does Marco want the gold mine but he’s certain he knows where to find diamonds. Marco drugs Emma and takes her on his quest in search of the diamonds and by the time she wakes she realizes she’s in trouble. Upon discovering Emma is gone, Finn suspects she’s been taken against her will. Finn is determined to find her and bring her home. Along the way he unexpectedly finds some interesting clues cast in the stones. Come hell or high water, he refuses to let anything happen to her, but finds himself wondering if he might be too late to save the only thing that truly matters to him.

Book Policy Styles and Trust in the Age of Pandemics

Download or read book Policy Styles and Trust in the Age of Pandemics written by Nikolaos Zahariadis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the reasons behind the variation in national responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. In doing so, it furthers the policy studies scholarship through an examination of the effects of policy styles on national responses to the pandemic. Despite governments being faced with the same threat, significant variation in national responses, frequently of contradictory nature, has been observed. Implications about responses inform a broader class of crises beyond this specific context. The authors argue that trust in government interacts with policy styles resulting in different responses and that the acute turbulence, uncertainty, and urgency of crises complicate the ability of policymakers to make sense of the problem. Finally, the book posits that unless there is high trust between society and the state, a decentralized response will likely be disastrous and concludes that while national responses to crises aim to save lives, they also serve to project political power and protect the status quo. This text will be of key interest to scholars and students of public policy, public administration, political science, sociology, public health, and crisis management/disaster management studies.
