Download or read book Business models along the poultry value chain in Kenya written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-01-28 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study characterizes the business model and the enterprise budget of farmers, traders, processors and retailers along the poultry value chain in Kiambu and Nairobi City Country. Results show that all poultry businesses are profitable and avail resources to start adopting biosecurity practices that minimize the introduction and spread of pathogens in animals. However, while producers have some incentives to adopt biosecurity practices, as avoiding and controlling diseases is essential for their profitability, traders, processors and retailers have little if any incentives to adopt biosecurity practices as they keep birds or poultry meat only for a limited period of time and the market for poultry products do not differentiate between safe and unsafe products. It is essential that animal health services systematically provide services beyond the farm gate to minimize the public health risks along the poultry value chain.

This book was released on 2022-06-27 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing population, urbanization and increasing incomes will result in an increased demand for animal source food products. To ensure the development of a healthy and productive livestock sector, investments are needed from the public and private sectors. We assess whether poultry producers are in a position to play a role in the development of healthy poultry systems by investing in biosecurity through examples of enterprise budgets of producers from Egypt, Kenya and Uganda. In all three countries, the most important revenue item is sale of broilers (>98 percent of total revenues). The two largest cost items are the purchase of day-old chicks (DOCs) and feed, covering 75 to 92 percent of total costs. Feed is the largest cost item at bigger farms (~5 000 birds per cycle) while purchase of DOCs is the largest cost item at smaller farms (~500 birds per cycle). The observed poultry businesses are profitable, profit margins range from 7 to 56 percent, and annual profits equal 2.3 (Kenya large farm) to 3.5 (Egypt) times the GDP per capita in the countries. Investment in biosecurity can potentially increase profits, however, the impact on profit is very context specific, depending on the different features of the businesses, their exposure to disease risk and market characteristics. We illustrate an example of a small farm in Uganda where profits increased by 10.8 percent after adopting three biosecurity practices.
Download or read book Using artificial intelligence to assess FAO s knowledge base on the technology accelerator written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harnessing science, technology and innovation (STI) is key to meeting the aspirations of efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems and leveraging emerging opportunities to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The FAO Strategic Framework 2022–2031 identifies STI as having enormous transformative potential and underlines the potential of emerging technologies. It also recognizes that STI can present substantial risks, such as reinforcing inequality and market concentration, or contributing to the degradation of natural resources. As one of four accelerators identified by the FAO Strategic Framework 2022–2031, technology is expected to “accelerate impact while minimizing trade-offs”. This report examines the technology accelerator trends across publicly available FAO knowledge reports, technical guidance and convening summaries. Leveraging AI-assisted classification of nearly 40 000 documents, this report offers a bird’s-eye perspective of six types of technology – digital technologies, biotechnologies, mechanization, irrigation technologies, renewable energy technologies and food processing technologies – as well as high-level trends for outcomes and social and demographic details about the communities using these technologies.

Download or read book BRICS and MICs Implications for Global Agrarian Transformation written by Ben Cousins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic and political rise of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), and powerful middle-income countries (MICs) such as Argentina, Indonesia and Turkey, has far-reaching implications for global agrarian transformation. These countries are key sites of agricultural commodity production, distribution, circulation and consumption and are contributing to major shifts in the character of agro-food systems. This comprehensive collection explores these issues through the lens of critical agrarian studies, which examine fundamental social change in, and in relation to, rural worlds. The authors explore key themes such as the processes of agrarian change associated with individual countries within the grouping, the role and impact of BRICS countries within their respective regions, the role of other MICs within these regions and the rising importance of MICs within global and regional agro-food systems. The book encompasses a wide variety of case studies, including the expansion of South African agrarian capital within Africa; Brazil as a regional agro-food power and its complex relationship with China, which has been investing heavily in Brazil; the role of BRICS and MICs in Bolivia’s soy complex; crop booms within China; China’s role in land deals in Southeast Asia; and Vietnamese investment in Cambodia. This book will be of interest to students and researchers of critical agrarian studies, with a focus on BRICS and MICs. It was originally published as a special issue of the journal Globalizations.
Download or read book Financing Agriculture Value Chains in India written by Gyanendra Mani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the successful private, public and civil society models of agriculture value chains in India and addresses relevant challenges and opportunities to improve their efficiency and inclusiveness. It promotes the value-chain approach as a tool to improve access to finance for small holder farmers and discusses the possible structure of and regulatory framework for the ‘National Common Agricultural Market’— a term that featured in the Indian Finance Minister’s 2014–15 budget speech, and which is aimed towards standardizing and improving transparency in agricultural trade practices across states under a single licensing system. The book deliberates on the potential of developing innovative financial instruments into the value chain framework by supporting tripartite agreements between producers, lead firms and financial institutions. Its fourteen chapters are divided into three parts—Agriculture Value Chain Financing: Theoretical Framework, Agriculture Value Chain Financing in Cases of Select Commodities; and Institutional Framework for Agriculture Value Chain Financing. Since the concept of value chain financing is being considered as a future policy agenda, the book is of great interest to corporations dealing with agricultural inputs and outputs; commercial, regional, rural and cooperative banks; policy makers; academicians and NGOs.
Download or read book Developing Sustainable Food Value Chains written by David Neven and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2014 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using sustainable food value chain development (SFVCD) approaches to reduce poverty presents both great opportunities and daunting challenges. SFVCD requires a systems approach to identifying root problems, innovative thinking to find effective solutions and broad-based partnerships to implement programmes that have an impact at scale. In practice, however, a misunderstanding of its fundamental nature can easily result in value-chain projects having limited or non-sustainable impact. Furthermore, development practitioners around the world are learning valuable lessons from both failures and successes, but many of these are not well disseminated. This new set of handbooks aims to address these gaps by providing practical guidance on SFVCD to a target audience of policy-makers, project designers and field practitioners. This first handbook provides a solid conceptual foundation on which to build the subsequent handbooks. It (1) clearly defines the concept of a sustainable food value chain; (2) presents and discusses a development paradigm that integrates the multidimensional concepts of sustainability and value added; (3) presents, discusses and illustrates ten principles that underlie SFVCD; and (4) discusses the potential and limitations of using the value-chain concept in food-systems development. By doing so, the handbook makes a strong case for placing SFVCD at the heart of any strategy aimed at reducing poverty and hunger in the long run.

Download or read book The Digitalisation of African Agriculture Report 2018 2019 written by Tsan, Michael and published by CTA. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inclusive, digitally-enabled agricultural transformation could help achieve meaningful livelihood improvements for Africa’s smallholder farmers and pastoralists. It could drive greater engagement in agriculture from women and youth and create employment opportunities along the value chain. At CTA we staked a claim on this power of digitalisation to more systematically transform agriculture early on. Digitalisation, focusing on not individual ICTs but the application of these technologies to entire value chains, is a theme that cuts across all of our work. In youth entrepreneurship, we are fostering a new breed of young ICT ‘agripreneurs’. In climate-smart agriculture multiple projects provide information that can help towards building resilience for smallholder farmers. And in women empowerment we are supporting digital platforms to drive greater inclusion for women entrepreneurs in agricultural value chains.

Download or read book Innovations and policy design for development for cross value chain services logistics and financial services written by Balana, Bedru and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WP3 intends to address the question: How can cross-food value chain and market services function better to increase employment and boost income of smallholders and SMEs? The WP focuses on two types of cross-value chain services, logistics and financial services. (1) logistics services – supply chain management, transportation, traceability, digital platforms for e-com merce, and (cold) storage. (2) value-chain financial services – mainly focusing on digital financial services (DFS) that facilitate trans actions, savings, access to and use of credit, and insurance. The logistics services in agri-food systems in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are often targeted at large-scale enterprises with greater market power and less accessible to smallholder farmers and small and micro enterprises (SMEs). WP3 aims to assess the ways in which these emerging logistics services (including digital platforms) can be cost-effectively targeted at smallholder farmers and agri-food SMEs. Regarding DFS, the WP will investigate cost-effective ways of improving access to and adoption of DFS among smallholders and agri-food SMEs, especially among women and youth. Though these emerging DFS appear to have a high potential to benefit smallholders and SMEs across the agri-food value chains in LMICs, they need a reliable internet connection, a suitable mobile phone network, and a broad network of mobile money agents to be effective. WP3 thus aims to identify innovations/emerging logistics and DFS and test their effectiveness to smallholders and SMEs using randomized control trials (RCTs) in pilots, with the goal of country-specific scalable designs.
