Book Business in Asia Pacific

Download or read book Business in Asia Pacific written by Sonia El Kahal and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2001 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of western business in the Asia Pacific region depends to a large degree on the capacity of western firms to learn new approaches to doing business in the region and to adopt new styles of management practice, business operations, and strategy. Business in Asia Pacific seeks to address this need by providing a useful insight into the international business opportunities and a guide to strategic management, decision-making, and business operations in the region in the wakeof the economic crisis of 1997. El Kahal brings together an account of the Asia Pacific business environment with an analysis of management styles and decision-making techniques. The book begins with an analysis of the Asian economic miracle and of the crisis of the late 1990s, including a country by country review of all the region's major economies in the aftermath of the crisis. Part II then goes on to investigate the socio-cultural bases of the Asia Pacific management environment, focusing in particular on the cases of Japan, South Korea, and China. This is followed by an analysis of post-crisis strategies for companies doing business in Asia Pacific and of the most effective ways of establishing markets in the region. The book concludes with an entire section of detailed case studies illustrating the experiences of a number of major multinationals in doing business in the region, including Daewoo, Wal-Mart, Nike, Land Rover, and Samsung. Using a variety of learning aids, including case materials, end of chapter review questions, and group project materials, Business in Asia Pacific helps the student to take a more active approach to studying this popular and important topic and as such will be invaluable reading for all students of business and management with an interest in this fast-growing region of the world economy.

Book Trade Policy in the Asia Pacific

Download or read book Trade Policy in the Asia Pacific written by Vinod K. Aggarwal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-03 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Asian countries are now pursuing greater formal economic institutionalization, weaving a web of bilateral and minilateral preferential trade agreements. Scholarly analysis of “formal” East Asian regionalism focuses on international political and economic factors such as the end of the Cold War, the Asian financial crisis, or the rising Sino-Japanese rivalry. Yet this work pays inadequate attention to the strategies of individual government agencies, business groups, labor unions, and NGOs across the region. Moreover, most studies also fail to adequately characterize different types of trade arrangements, often lumping together bilateral accords with minilateral ones, and transregional agreements with those within the region. To fully understand this cross-national variance, this book argues that researchers must give greater attention to the domestic politics within East Asian countries and the U.S., involving the interplay of these subnational players. With contributions from leading country and regional trade specialists, this book examines East Asian and American trade strategies through the lens of a domestic bargaining game approach with a focus on the interplay of interests, ideas, and domestic institutions within the context of broader international shifts. With respect to domestic politics, the chapters show how subnational actors engage in lobbying, both of their own governments and through their links to others in the region. They also trace the evolution of interests and ideas over time, helping us to generate a better understanding of historical trends in the region. In addition to scholars of East Asian and comparative regionalism, this book will be of interest to policy-makers concerned with international trade and U.S.-Asia relations, and those interested in understanding the rich trade institutional landscape that we see emerging in the Asia-Pacific.

Book Trade in Services in the Asia Pacific Region

Download or read book Trade in Services in the Asia Pacific Region written by Takatoshi Ito and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the tremendous growth of the service sector—including international trade in services—has outstripped that of manufacturing in many industrialized nations. As the importance of services has grown, economists have begun to focus on policy issues raised by them and have tried to understand what, if any, differences there are between production and delivery of goods and services. This volume is the first book-length attempt to analyze trade in services in the Asia-Pacific region. Contributors provide overviews of basic issues involved in studying the service sector; investigate the impact of increasing trade in services on the economies of Taiwan, Korea, and Hong Kong; present detailed analyses of specific service sectors (telecommunications, financial services, international tourism, and accounting); and extend our understanding of trade in services beyond the usual concept (measured in balance of payment statistics) to include indirect services and services undertaken abroad by subsidiaries and affiliates.

Book Innovation in the Asia Pacific

Download or read book Innovation in the Asia Pacific written by Thomas Clarke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book promotes the creation of advanced knowledge-based economies driven by innovation networks and the continuous development of human capital and capability. It provides valuable insights into the growing emergence of knowledge-based industries of the Asia Pacific, and highlights research on: modes of creativity and innovation; intellectual property; the components of national innovation systems such as firms, education and training; knowledge and technical infrastructure; and public policy. The Asia Pacific region is currently in the process of transforming from being the manufacturing centre of the global economy to a centre of innovation for the knowledge economy, with the successful IPO of Alibaba in 2014 being a prime example of this shift. From a neo-Schumpeterian perspective, the region is increasingly engaged in shortening and intensifying cycles of innovation. The historic agreement at the Beijing APEC meeting between China and the US to radically reduce carbon emissions indicates that one imperative of this innovation is to contribute to sustainability. The fact that the US Government is moving away from this historic commitment, while the Chinese Government is endorsing the commitment, indicates an emerging opportunity for Asia to lead the world technologically in a vital industrial sector of the future.

Book Guanxi and Business

Download or read book Guanxi and Business written by Yadong Luo and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guanxi (interpersonal relationship) is one of the major dynamics of Chinese society. It has been a pervasive part of the Chinese business world for the last few centuries. It binds literally millions of Chinese firms into a social and business web. It is widely recognized to be a key determinant of business performance, because the life-blood of the macro economy and micro business conduct in the society, including local firms as well as foreign investors and marketers, inevitably faces guanxi dynamics. No company can go far unless it has extensive guanxi in this setting. In China's new, fast-paced business environment, guanxi has been more entrenched than ever, heavily influencing Chinese social behavior and business practice. Despite the current academic and practical interest in guanxi, there is no book-length treatment systematically and vigorously exploring the concept and practice from the business perspective. This book fills that gap by exploring the various social economic cultural, and business issues relating to the complex concept and practice of guanxi.

Book Social Capital in the Asia Pacific

Download or read book Social Capital in the Asia Pacific written by Yuliani Suseno and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-06 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social capital is broadly conceptualised as consisting of resources and network ties embedded in the social structures and relationships that facilitate beneficial outcomes for the actors within those structures. Despite the number of research studies on social capital, there have been fewer attempts to examine social capital in the context of service-oriented firms, particularly in the Asia Pacific. This is surprising as the service industry plays an important role in the global services trade transactions and business activities. Social capital enables and maintains social relations for business transformation for service-oriented firms. Indeed, it would be unimaginable for any economic activity, particularly in service-oriented firms, to occur without social capital. This examination of social capital in the Asia Pacific region provides the context for recognising the cultural, social and economic opportunities and challenges of several Asia Pacific countries that can potentially enrich our knowledge and understanding of the region. Contributions are drawn from cases based in Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea, China and Australia, for relevant application in the areas of social capital and service-oriented firms in the Asia Pacific. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Asia Pacific Business Review.
