Book Business As a Holy Calling

Download or read book Business As a Holy Calling written by Tim Dearborn and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business can be as much Christian ministry as preaching, teaching Sunday School, or volunteering in a food bank. Tragically, the Church has tended to value businessperson's volunteer time more than their professional life. This workbook guides a discussion between businesspersons and their pastors to explore God's purposes for business. It is designed for use by individuals and small groups, including personal reflection and group discussion questions. It will contribute to a new reformation in our understanding of lay ministry--not lay persons volunteering in church work--but lay persons participating in the coming of God's kingdom in every aspect of life. Business isn't "automatically" a "holy calling." There is a "question mark" attached to the phrase. It can become one when God's multiple purposes in addition to profit and making an income are fulfilled. Businesspersons can work with joy and fulfillment when they know that their work is contributing to other people and all of creation flourishing.

Book excerpt: When you understand it properly, the doctrine of vocation—"doing everything for God's glory"—is not a platitude or an outdated notion. This principle that we vaguely apply to our lives and our work is actually the key to Christian ethics, to influencing our culture for Christ, and to infusing our ordinary, everyday lives with the presence of God. For when we realize that the "mundane" activities that consume most of our time are "God's hiding places," our perspective changes. Culture expert Gene Veith unpacks the biblical, Reformation teaching about the doctrine of vocation, emphasizing not what we should specifically do with our time or what careers we are called to, but what God does in and through our callings—even within the home. In each task He has given us—in our workplaces and families, our churches and society—God Himself is at work. Veith guides you to discover God's purpose and calling in those seemingly ordinary areas by providing you with a spiritual framework for thinking about such issues and for acting upon them with a changed perspective.

  • ISBN : 0609803700

Download or read book Callings written by Gregg Michael Levoy and published by Harmony. This book was released on 1998-09-08 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we know if we're following our true callings? How do we sharpen our senses to cut through the distractions of everyday reality and hear the calls that are beckoning us? is the first book to examine the many kinds of calls we receive and the great variety of channels through which they come to us. A calling may be to do something (change careers, go back to school, have a child) or to be something (more creative, less judgmental, more loving). While honoring a calling's essential mystery, this book also guides readers to ask and answer the fundamental questions that arise from any calling: How do we recognize it? How do we distinguish the true call from the siren song? How do we handle our resistance to a call? What happens when we say yes? What happens when we say no? Drawing on the hard-won wisdom and powerful stories of people who have followed their own calls, Gregg Levoy shows us the many ways to translate a calling into action. In a style that is poetic, exuberant, and keenly insightful, he presents an illuminating and ultimately practical inquiry into how we listen and respond to our calls, whether at work or at home, in our relationships or in service. Callings is a compassionate guide to discovering your own callings and negotiating the tight passages to personal power and authenticity.

Download or read book Psalm 15 written by David W. Whitlock and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psalm 15 begins with two related questions: "LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill?" (v. 1). These are questions worthy of our consideration as Christian business professionals seeking to integrate our faith and our work. The psalmist answers the questions with the following description: "He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from his heart and has no slander on his tongue, who does his neighbor no wrong and casts no slur on his fellowman, who despises a vile man but honors those who fear the LORD, who keeps his oath even when it hurts, who lends his money without usury and does not accept a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things will never be shaken" (vv. 2-5, NIV). Using this psalm as a basis, Southwest Baptist University's College of Business and Computer Science is devoted to educating "Psalm 15 professionals," who exemplify traits including integrity, service, respect, charity, faithfulness, truthfulness, humility, and perseverance. The devotions in this small volume draw readers' attention to the need for believers to exemplify such character traits. Contributions from the SBU faculty and administration remind us of the necessity to approach life and work with a biblical worldview. This volume is an abbreviated version of another Resource Publications book, A Noble Calling: Devotions and Essays for Business Professionals, also available from Wipf and Stock Publishers (www.wipfandstock.com).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We want the thousands of hours we will work over our lifetime to matter. But how do we know they're really significant? How do we go from being defined by what we do to having our work become an expression of who we are? There is not a quick fix but a progressive solution: it begins with surrendering our whole lives and then every moment of our lives to God. In The Spiritual Art of Business, "corporate mystic" Barry Rowan invites us to be transformed by God that he might transform the world through us as we begin to see our work as an extension of our faith. He says, "We don't derive meaning from our work; we bring meaning to our work." Relating his extensive past in high-ranking executive roles, Rowan beckons us into a connection with God that will infuse our lives, our offices, and our world with meaning. With forty short chapters, this is not just a book to be read but instead is an invitation into an experience with God. Here's an opportunity to ponder new perspectives and see business as a chance to serve God by contributing to a better society.

Book A Noble Calling

Download or read book A Noble Calling written by David W. Whitlock and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too often, individuals who have been called to practice their gifts and talents in the field of business and professional life sense that to serve God they ought to be doing something more directly involved with the church. Many successful business leaders, upon coming to faith in Christ or upon renewing their interest in God's Word, struggle with whether or not they should enter vocational ministry. Certainly, God calls some from among the professions into such vocations, but many simply haven't realized the full potential of where God has placed them. God's people who are assigned to duties in corporate boardrooms or offices, on sales forces, in entrepreneurial ventures, and as members of research and development teams are among his most effective servants. Believers who are active in the marketplace are surely among God's most treasured ministers and have the potential to have a wider impact and larger influence than most who serve in full-time vocational ministries. Likewise, these professionals have a capacity for great harm to the church and the cause of Christ if while they make claims of Christian belief, their actions prove inconsistent with what God's Word teaches--if their walk doesn't match their talk. Be encouraged! God wants to use you where you are. He wants to sanctify all of what you have learned and experienced. You have great potential in the kingdom!

Book excerpt: Where is God in my business? - Time poor; losing control; best employee gone; marriage breaking up. It shouldn't be like this... You're right, it shouldn't - and it doesn't have to be. Typically, as Christian business owners, we sense something's missing. We build solid, commercial businesses, applying Christian values and morality into them because that's what you do, right? Yet we're dissatisfied. Our very 'gut' tells us that good morals and values, whilst a familiar starting point, just isn't enough. Surely, there's got to be more! Businesses we grow with God...can't they be transformingly different? - so, instead of draining us, they become exciting and energising to operate? In When Jesus Calls - Transforming businesses into expressions of God's Kingdom, the invitation of Jesus is reissued to entrepreneurs: align your business with the Kingdom of God. It's a gentle wooing by God's Spirit. An invitation so attractive and outrageous that you're drawn beautifully into His realm of possibilities. Where God Himself takes the lead as CEO of your business, powerfully renovating it into what He knows it can be. Peter Lawry (recognised by peers as one of the top SME Business Strategists and improvement specialists in New Zealand) has lived it, and proved God's faithfulness. So have the many Christian business women and men he's interviewed. This book tells their stories; and shares how your business can undergo awe-inspiring transformation too. Reading When Jesus Calls is a profoundly life-changing journey. Peter doesn't peddle unrealistic promises. He shares clear Biblical truth, and life in the Spirit for business, in such an easy-to-grasp way - through stories. Start reshaping your business into one that really matters. Book The Business Book Bible

Download or read book The Business Book Bible written by Derek B Lewis and published by Derek Lewis Ink. This book was released on 2014-12-31 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brian Tracy said, "This book gives you a proven strategy to write and sell an excellent book on any business subject you know and care about." Todd Sattersten, co-author of "The 100 Best Business Books of All Time," said, "No one tells you how hard it is to write a business book. Luckily, Derek's 'Bible' makes it easier-much easier." Literary agents, publishers, Fortune 500 consultants-they've all had rave reviews for "The Business Book Bible," the only full-length, in-depth book on how to put together a great thought leadership book. There are plenty of writing guides out there for memoirs, general business communication, crime thrillers, or romance novels. But until now, there's never been anywhere would-be business authors could turn to for help. That's unfortunate because business books present a completely different set of challenges. For example: - How do you connect with your readers so they trust you and your advice? - How do you artfully point to your products and services without coming off like a late-night infomercial? - How do you keep your reader engaged throughout the book, especially if your material is--shall we say--less than thrilling? No other writing guide can teach you what you need to know...and do you really want to learn the hard way? With writing your book, you want to get it right the first time. Written by a business ghostwriter, "The Business Book Bible" covers everything you need to know, from framing your authority to picking the perfect title, plus: - Figuring out how long your book should be - Winning the battle of writer's block - Nailing down your real reader (and what to do when they're different than your ideal client) - Giving away the secret sauce - The unforgivable sin in writing - Looking like a pro (and not a rank amateur) - Acting like a publisher (even if you have one) ....and much, much more. You'll learn how to follow the same 5-step process the author uses to write and ghostwrite multiple books a year. You'll see how to keep your book focused and how to cut the unnecessary material. You'll discover multiple methods of getting your ideas out of your head--and most of them don't even involve writing! John Spence, voted one of the top 100 business thought leaders in America, said, "As the author of five business books, I sure wish I had read this one earlier in my career. It's would've saved me a lot of time, headache, stress, and money." Here's a startling example of just one of the great tips and tricks contained in the book: you don't start writing a book by actually writing the book. One of the biggest mistakes first-time authors make is sitting down at their computer, expecting to start with the first word of chapter one, and then write all the way through to "The End." If only it were that easy! Amateurs try to get it perfect right from the start. The pros know that writing is a process. You start by getting all your ideas out of head and onto paper first. You'll have a jumbled mess that looks like a new jigsaw puzzle. You have to sift and sort through it to find the material worth using. Then and only then can you start piecing the puzzle together. It's a painstaking, time-consuming process-but one that's well worth it. Peter Economy, "The Management Guy" at Inc. said, "Derek Lewis's 'The Business Book Bible' is by far the most comprehensive book I have ever seen on the nuts and bolts of writing a business book. If you're planning to write a business book, then you would do well to read this book first." Start writing your book by reading this one!"

Book Unholy Business

  • Release : 2008-10-08
  • ISBN : 0061980900
  • Pages : 383 pages

Download or read book Unholy Business written by Nina Burleigh and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2008-10-08 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2002, an ancient limestone box called the James Ossuary was trumpeted on the world's front pages as the first material evidence of the existence of Jesus Christ. Today it is exhibit number one in a forgery trial involving millions of dollars worth of high-end, Biblical era relics, some of which literally re-wrote Near Eastern history and which could lead to the incarceration of some very wealthy men and embarrass major international institutions, including the British Museum and Sotheby's. Set in Israel, with its 30,000 archaeological digs crammed with biblical-era artifacts, and full of colorful characters—scholars, evangelicals, detectives, and millionaire collectors—Unholy Business tells the incredibly story of what the Israeli authorities have called "the fraud of the century." It takes readers into the murky world of Holy Land relic dealing, from the back alleys of Jerusalem's Old City to New York's Fifth Avenue, and reveals biblical archaeology as it is pulled apart by religious believers on one side and scientists on the other.
