Book excerpt: In the aftermath of 9/11, President Bush declared that the struggle against terrorism would be nothing less than a war—a war that would require new tools and a new mind-set. As legal sanction was given to covert surveillance and interrogation tactics, internal struggles brewed over programs and policies that threatened to tear at the constitutional fabric of the country.Bush's Law is the alarming account of the White House's efforts to prevent the publication of Eric Lichtblau's exposé on warrantless wiretapping—and an authoritative examination of how the Bush administration employed its “war on terror” to mask the most radical remaking of American justice in generations.

Download or read book American Pinocchios written by Alan R. Bialeck LLC and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-05-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is commonly alleged that politicians misrepresent events for their own gain, but very few (if any) critics can produce facts to support their allegations. Have Democrats knowingly misrepresented George W. Bush's involvement in stealing an election, getting us into the Iraq War, and causing the 2008 financial crisis? An analyst separates fact from fiction. For example, the Financial Crisis Commission Report, which purports to explain the cause of the 2008 financial crisis with detailed facts, fails to support its own conclusions. The author therefore challenges readers to carefully parse through the facts within to reach their own conclusions. To rely on any third party to interpret events is a surrender of political independence and intellectual freedoms. The author intends to donate 50 percent of the net profits from the sale of this book to the Wounded Warrior Project (www.WoundedWarriorProject.org).

Book The Legacy of George W Bush A Collection of Conflicting Opinions

Download or read book The Legacy of George W Bush A Collection of Conflicting Opinions written by John Crippen and published by John Crippen. This book was released on 2009-01-22 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a man's legacy be drawn from an eight year period in time? What kind of a footprint has GWB left on the American people, or the world for that matter? Has he served his country well by protecting us from terrorism, or has a alienated America from the rest of the world. Has he acted as a Christian in his role as President of the United States, or has he misused the Bible as a means of procuring votes and evoking war? Was the rebuilding of Iraq set in motion years before the Twin Towers tragedy, or was this a rapid decision based on an emergent circumstance? I have tried to keep this debate as original as possible. That includes errors in grammar, punctuation and spelling. I have also tried to collect them in a somewhat chronological method in order to keep a level playing field. I have simply collected publicly posted comments of others from open sources.

Book The Evangelical President

Download or read book The Evangelical President written by Bill Sammon and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-09-25 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Look at the polls today and you might think President Bush is a failure. The media is relentlessly hostile to him. His party lost both houses of Congress in the 2006 election. And yet...and yet, his presidency could be one of the most important in modern times. George W. Bush not only faced an unprecedented attack on the American homeland, but he also responded with an ambitious effort to remake the world -- an effort being fought in Afghanistan and Iraq and in smaller skirmishes around the globe, an effort that for all its setbacks still might succeed, with revolutionary consequences. New York Times bestselling author and acclaimed White House reporter Bill Sammon is a true insider, and in his new book, The Evangelical President, he offers a snapshot of the Bush administration from winter 2005 to summer 2007. This momentous time mixed triumph and disaster-from the triumph of the successful tracking and killing of Al Qaeda's terrorist mastermind Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and the spectacularly successful Iraqi elections, to the disaster of the subsequent unraveling in Iraq and American voters' repudiation of Bush in the congressional elections of 2006. But through it all, Sammon shows that President Bush took the high road, fighting to spread moral democracy around the world while the low-minded press focused on Vice President Cheney's accidental shooting of a friend while hunting and Virginia senator George Allen's use of the word macaca on the campaign trail.

Book The Great Turning

  • Publisher : ReadHowYouWant.com
  • Release : 2009-02-20
  • ISBN : 1442964480
  • Pages : 394 pages

Download or read book The Great Turning written by David C. Korten and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2009-02-20 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the issues addressed in The Great Turning are global and universal, I have chosen to focus my analysis on the United States. It is the nation among all others that is most challenged by the imperatives of the Great Turning. Few other nations are so accustomed to living beyond their own means, so imbued with a sense of special virtue and entitlement, or so burdened by a political leadership as out of touch with global reality and as incapable of accepting responsibility for the consequences of its actions. Because of its global presence, whether the United States responds to the imperatives with the logic of Empire or the logic of Earth Community is likely to have far-reaching consequences for all nations. Furthermore, the United States is the nation of my birth, the nation I know best and love most, and the nation for whose role in the world I feel most responsible.

Book Atomic Thunder

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth account of Great Britain’s atomic testing efforts in South Australia in the 1950s and ’60s, and its effects. British nuclear testing took place at Maralinga, South Australia, between 1956 and 1963, after Australian Prime Minister Robert Menzies had handed over 3,200 square kilometres of open desert to the British Government, without informing his own people. The atomic weapons test series wreaked havoc on Indigenous communities and turned the land into a radioactive wasteland. How did it come to pass that a democracy such as Australia suddenly found itself hosting another country’s nuclear program? And why has it continued to be shrouded in mystery, even decades after the atomic thunder clouds stopped rolling across the South Australian test site? In this meticulously researched and shocking work, journalist and academic Elizabeth Tynan reveals the truth of what really happened at Maralinga and the devastating consequences of what took place there, not to mention the mess that was left behind. Praise for Atomic Thunder “Compulsive reading? Make that compulsory. This is a brilliant book.” —Philip Adams

It also looks at the political factors behind the use of drones, including domestic and global attitudes toward their use and potential issues of proliferation and escalation. Finally, the use of drones by other countries, such as Israel and China, is examined. Each chapter features a case study that highlights particular incidents and patterns of operation in specific regions, including Yemen, Somalia, Pakistan, and Libya and strike types (signature strikes, personality strikes, etc.).

Book Virginity or Death

Download or read book Virginity or Death written by Katha Pollitt and published by Random House. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “As this book, which is greater than the sum of its brilliant parts makes clear, Katha Pollitt, who is famously a feminist, is also a humorist, a moralist and a most hilarious, wise, and incisive observer.” –Victor Navasky, author of A Matter of Opinion Through presidential administrations Democratic and Republican, Katha Pollitt has observed and exposed the inconsistencies and illogic of those who stand in the way of progress solely to hold on to their power. In defense of human rights and equality, she assails the corrupt and educates the misguided with compassion, Swiftian wit, and complete literary authority. In this compelling collection, Pollitt skewers one hypocrite after another. She suggests, for example, that creationists be permitted to oppose the teaching of evolution only so long as they agree to forgo the benefits of the theory–such as flu vaccines. She gently wonders if those who denounced the decision to allow Terri Schiavo to die in peace would themselves be satisfied to be video-diagnosed by Senator Bill Frist. And in the title essay about fundamentalists’ antagonism toward sex education and STD prevention, she asks, “What is it with these right-wing Christians? Faced with a choice between sex and death, they choose death every time.” Pollitt is one of the most eloquent and persuasive voices in American political conversation of this or any other era, and Virginity or Death! Is a marvelous demonstration of her keen insight, mordant humor, and sense of justice. “Katha Pollitt has long and rightly been hailed for her brilliance, wit, and great insight into politics, social issues, and women’s rights. As with all of her work, I am enormously grateful for Virginity or Death!, and also deeply jealous.” –Anne Lamott, author of Traveling Mercies

Book The Conservatives Have No Clothes

Download or read book The Conservatives Have No Clothes written by Greg Anrig Jr. and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why conservatism equals terrible government--and always will. "Ending the conservative era requires organizing, yes, but also hard thinking and shrewd analysis. When progressives of the future look back at how they triumphed, one of the people they'll thank is Greg Anrig. Drawing inspiration from the work of the early neoconservatives who demolished public support for liberal programs, Anrig casts a sharp eye on conservative ideas and nostrums and shows that many of them simply don't work because they are rooted more in ideological dreams than in reality. Facts are stubborn things, Ronald Reagan once said, and Anrig makes good use of them in this important and engaging book."-E. J. Dionne, syndicated columnist and author of Why Americans Hate Politics "Greg Anrig's wide-ranging and perceptive book looks beyond the ideology of the right and offers a persuasive account of the many policy failures that have emerged out of the conservative movement. Anrig has put the Bush administration and the right to a test that they themselves have carefully avoided. He has held them accountable not for their ideas, but for their performance."-Alan Brinkley, Allan Nevins Professor of History, Columbia University "In this well-researched and witty book, Anrig critiques 'right-wing ideas' by examining what the policies and programs that embodied them have wrought over the last three decades. While giving several conservative ideas their due, he finds their record to be mixed at best."-John J. DiIulio Jr., political science professor and first director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives "With fastidious research and unimpeachable facts, Greg Anrig establishes the sound proposition that competent governance is incompatible with disbelief in government. The odd combination of the religious right dictating personal morality, 'neoconservatism' preaching unilateral interventionism, and radical libertarian tax cuts have cast our Republic adrift from its moorings. Restoration of common sense to government is long overdue."-Gary Hart, Former United States Senator

Book Americans Against Obama

Download or read book Americans Against Obama written by Thomas R. Meinders and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-07-28 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans Against Obama is a collection of newsletters that I produced as the Committee Chairman of the American Citizens Political Action Committee to show what Americans think about Obama and his administration. These newsletters were produced at the time the main stream media and others released their press releases. It is designed to illustrate what the average American thought of the articles and how biased the main stream media is in slanting their articles to favor the unions, Democrats and President Obama. There should be more truth in reporting. It appears that the White House is approving all the main stream media reports instead of reporting actual facts. That is not right. Our purpose is to have a record of what the American citizens wanted our elected representatives and president to try to accomplish while they are in office. We will then be able to compare the results at the end of 2012 and see who has performed their duties in the manner that the United States citizens wanted. I think we are going to be really surprised by the results.
