Book Experimental Study on Natural convection Boiling Burnout in an Annulus PWR BWR

Download or read book Experimental Study on Natural convection Boiling Burnout in an Annulus PWR BWR written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study was performed on burnout heat flux at low flow rates for low-pressure steam-water upward flow in an annulus. The data indicated that a premature burnout occurred due to flow-regime transition from churn-turbulent to annular flow. It is shown that the burnout observed in the experiment is essentially a flooding-limited burnout and the burnout heat flux can be well reproduced by a nondimensional correlation derived from the previously obtained criterion for flow-regime transition. It is also shown that the conventional correlations for burnout heat flux at low mass velocities agree well with the data on circulation and entrainment-limited burnout.

Book Incipient Boiling and Burnout Heat Flux for Subcooled Water Flowing in Annuli Containing Heated Concentric Wires

Download or read book Incipient Boiling and Burnout Heat Flux for Subcooled Water Flowing in Annuli Containing Heated Concentric Wires written by Lawrence Lyle Nolan and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incipient boiling and burnout heat fluxes were studied for sub-cooled forced convection annular flow. Small wires varying from 0.010 to 0.020 inch in diameter were used as the inner core of the annulus and a one inch ID glass tube 24 inches long was used as the outer tube. This gave diameter ratios from 100:1 to 50:1. The water flow rate varied from 685,000 to 2,710,000 LBM/(hr.ft.2) at a constant temperature of 208.4°F and a constant pressure of 18.7 psia. Alternating current was supplied to the wires, and the power required for incipient boiling and burnout heat flux measured. Incipient boiling heat fluxes varied from 70,200 to 254,000 BTU/(hr.ft.2) while burnout heat fluxes ranged from 638,000 to 921,000 BTU/(hr.ft.2). For the range of operating conditions considered it was found that the heat transfer coefficient for incipient boiling was much less than predicted by other investigators. Measured burnout heat flux agreed well with an empirical relationship developed by Weatherhead.

Book BURNOUT HEAT FLUXES FOR LOW PRESSURE WATER IN NATURAL CIRCULATION

Download or read book BURNOUT HEAT FLUXES FOR LOW PRESSURE WATER IN NATURAL CIRCULATION written by and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-nine experimental determinations of burn-out heat flux were made with water flowing by natural circulaion through electrically heated vertical tubes with and without internal twisted tapes and through rectangular cross sections of three aspect ratios. Heated lengths varied from 10 to 33 inches, system pressure at the testsection flow exit from 14.7 to 26.3 psia, inlet subcooling from 36 to 170 deg F, and burn-out heat flux from 13,000 to 218,500 Btu/hr/sq ft. Tests were made with both unrestricted and restricted return flow paths. Three correlations were developed for predicting natural-circulation burn-out heat fluxes for such conditions. Two are useful for rapid estimation but the third involves a more fundamental assessment of the coolant mass velocity at burn-out by a graphical matching of the heat flux that a given flow rate can sustain to the heat flux that will produce that flow rate. For all the data, this approach gave average and maximum deviations of 15 and 38%, respectively. It was found that use of a slip ratio of unity is adequate for burnout prediction, and the reasons for this are discussed in detail. The small burn-out penalty incurred by a substantial restriction of return flow path, experimentally observed, is in complete accord with the theoretical model. (auth).
