Book excerpt: This is a paper for anyone wanting to make sense of the new Europe. The Bundesbank is crucial for the processes of both German and European Economic and Monetary Union. It may provide the model for any future European Central Bank or "Euro-Fed". To understand the implications of this for the future of European monetary integration one must also understand the history and structure of the Bundesbank, its ethos and objectives. This book examines these issues and in particular how the Bundesbank has reacted to international pressure.

Book The Mark of the Bundesbank

Download or read book The Mark of the Bundesbank written by Dorothee Heisenberg and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the Bundesbank now the dominant German actor in international monetary cooperation, Germany's partner states have begun to consider the requirements of the bank--rather than the government--paramount. Dorothee Heisenberg maintains that the evolution of the Bundesbank is key to understanding how and why Europeans chose to achieve monetary union. Heisenberg demonstrates that the domestic relationship between the Bundesbank and the German government is a significant determinant of cooperation at the European level. Drawing on historical evidence from 1968 to the present, she reveals that the bank has at times been willing to change its domestic monetary policies solely on the basis of the international situation. Similarly, it has become increasingly likely to challenge the government's monetary policy, and was the primary force in negotiating EMU.
