Download or read book Bumper Stickers on the Clouds written by Ron Ritts and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did you ever look at the clouds in the sky and notice the bumper stickers God has pasted on them to try and get our attention? Bumper Stickers on the Clouds presents some of the signs you may have missed. The essays and humorous stories included within will help you to relax, laugh, and provide some new perspectives on your Christian journey. Bible references and the "re-telling" of Bible stories and verses assist in furthering the understanding and thinking that we must use in order to successfully carry out God's plan for each of us. Do you ever have questions about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, or the Bible? What about the creation story? Who exactly was at fault in the whole Garden of Eden fiasco? How many of each animal did Moses take on the ark? (Answer: zero. It was Noah with the animals, not Moses, but even ministers fall for this old joke ) Laughter is one of God's great gifts to us. In the world today, we sometimes are too quick to not see the humor of our earthly life. We become offended rather than realize how therapeutic laughter can be. Keep your heart light and be joyful

Download or read book The Cloud of Unknowing written by Mimi Lipson and published by Verse Chorus Press. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Funny, tough, and heartbreaking — often all at once — Mimi Lipson’s debut collection is a grand tour of bars, diners, bus stations, dog parks, hardcore clubs, vacant lots, and other places that draw people whose inner lives are richer than their wallets. Lipson’s alter ego, the sharp-tongued and sharp-eyed Kitty, appears in a variety of guises: as a seven-year-old on a Florida vacation scammed by her roguish father, as a college student who receives a stunningly crucial education outside the classroom, as a passenger whose life changes on a cross-country bus. After meeting her parents, her brother, her friends and coworkers, we are introduced to Isaac, the sui generis man-child who becomes both her lover and her charge, a human roller-coaster who swings her between delight, exasperation, and mortal peril. Like a dinner composed of appetizers, Lipson’s book is very nearly a novel, in mosaic form, without all the boring parts. Her wit is as sharp as a serpent’s tooth, her sentences as percussively satisfying as billiard balls clicking into the pocket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tag clouds are everywhere on the web these days. First popularized by the web sites Flickr, Technorati, and del.icio.us, these amorphous clumps of words now appear on a slew of web sites as visual evidence of their membership in the elite corps of "Web 2.0." This PDF analyzes what is and isn't a tag cloud, offers design tips for using them effectively, and then goes on to show how to collect tags and display them in the tag cloud format. Scripts are provided in Perl and PHP. Yes, some have said tag clouds are a fad. But as you will see, tag clouds, when used properly, have real merits. More importantly, the skills you learn in making your own tag clouds enable you to make other interesting kinds of interfaces that will outlast the mercurial fads of this year or the next.
Download or read book Long Cloud Ride written by Josie Dew and published by Sphere. This book was released on 2011-04-07 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After two months on board a Russian container ship sailing 15,000 miles across the world, Josie finally arrives in New Zealand with her bike. Over the next nine months she cycles 10,000 kilometres all over North and South Islands while experiencing the wettest, windiest and stormiest year on record. During this time Josie was spat at, shouted at, honked at, and both run off and blown off the road. She got soaked, sunburnt, hailed on and snowed on and was alternately starved and over-fed, over-charged and under-charged. Then there was the wildlife: the possums (both dead and alive): exotic birds such as moreporks (with their eerie call) and fantails (who decided to follow); the ostriches, who liked to chase English cyclists and the harriers, who liked to dive bomb them; the more familiar but no less frustrating farm animals, who provided sheep-jams and cow-blocks to slow Josie down. In Long Cloud Ride, Josie brings New Zealand brilliantly to life. Warm, witty and acutely observed as ever, her latest adventure is sure to delight old and new fans alike.

Download or read book Longing for the Bomb written by Lindsey A. Freeman and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2015-04-13 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longing for the Bomb traces the unusual story of the first atomic city and the emergence of American nuclear culture. Tucked into the folds of Appalachia and kept off all commercial maps, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, was created for the Manhattan Project by the U.S. government in the 1940s. Its workers labored at a breakneck pace, most aware only that their jobs were helping "the war effort." The city has experienced the entire lifespan of the Atomic Age, from the fevered wartime enrichment of the uranium that fueled Little Boy, through a brief period of atomic utopianism after World War II when it began to brand itself as "The Atomic City," to the anxieties of the Cold War, to the contradictory contemporary period of nuclear unease and atomic nostalgia. Oak Ridge's story deepens our understanding of the complex relationship between America and its bombs. Blending historiography and ethnography, Lindsey Freeman shows how a once-secret city is visibly caught in an uncertain present, no longer what it was historically yet still clinging to the hope of a nuclear future. It is a place where history, memory, and myth compete and conspire to tell the story of America's atomic past and to explain the nuclear present.

Flesh, steel, concrete, rockets, dollars posts, girders, laser beams, words. Do you want people to say, He was an okay scribbler? Had his helmet on backwards? No, you want to be the Sphinx of scribblers, the one who etched his thoughts into stone and dared people to turn the heavy pages. Throw the helmet to Theseus and start gathering flowers and beechstaves in the folium et volumen. If you settle for less, theyll chuckle derisively, He took a stab at writing and killed everything he wrote. Journey to spaceman nowhere. Or maybe you are the Sphinx of readers? Neat concrete or asphalt would make for a nicer st/roll. (Especially if youre driving an electric wheelchair instead of a pair of hairy, chimpanzee-like legs.) Neat versus dirty or clean versus clutter; control versus free spirit; sterility versus life. Same things. Dont get your foot caught between the extremes while becoming who you are. You will be forever changed even by the end of this paragraph. People must, of course, create their own meanings and reasons to live. At least most people. As a gladly-suffered screwball, I shouldnt cast too many aspersions upon the habits of the unreflecting herd; the others, content to follow the make-believe of yet others still, probably mill about semi-consciously, driven by various addictions, phobias and animal impulses. I am a bookwriting animal, however, and these art projects occupy the otherwise empty, meaningless hours of my life, when not pursuing various addictions, phobias and animal impulses. In print, this is my first book. Its title is stolen from a Jerry Warren film -- a film which he, in kind, stole from Mexican filmmakers. Now the circle is broke
