Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the United States Fish Commission, Vol. 2 No one will deny that this is a grand idea, and the only question was for Mr. Von dem Borne to furnish the proof of its practicability. Mr. Von dem Borne has done this in the presence of a specially invited com pany of representatives of the authorities most interested in this matter, by laying his plan before them on the occasion of large pond-carp fish eries near his estate of Berneuchen. The result was such as to remove all doubt from the minds of those present as to the feasibility of Mr. Von dem Borne's plan for increasing the productiveness of large sheets of fresh water. It may therefore interest our readers if we lay before them an outline of this plan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the United States Fish Commission, 1884, Vol. 4 For several years a careful inspection of the marine products brought into the District of Columbia has been made under the direction of the health officer of the District. Five years ago an arrangement was perfected by Prof. S. F. Baird, Commissioner of Fisheries, with Hon. Smith Townshend, M. D., health officer, whereby the daily receipts of fresh fish, oysters, &c., should be tabulated and transmitted in monthly tables to the Fish Commission. These monthly tables have all been footed and transferred to yearly tables in this office. I am able herewith to present annual tables for 1879, 1880, 1881, 1882, and 1883 (Tables I, II, III, IV, V). The yield of shad and herring may be supposed to have been influenced somewhat by the artificial propagation under the direction of the United States Fish Commission, which has been carried on at the Potomac for a number of years. The run of shad and herring is also affected by the temperature, which varies somewhat for the same date in different years. This is presented in Tables VII to X, inclusive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fisheries and Fishery Industries of the United States It is now nearly four hundred years Since these grounds were first fished upon by Europeans, and their resources are still unfailing; but the fishing interests have been mainly transferred to the New World, France alone of European countries having continued to send fishing vessels across the Atlantic down to 1880. Since then, however, the Portuguese have begun to exhibit some activity in connection with the cod fishery of the Grand Bank, and in the Spring and sum mer of 1885 bought several New England fishing schooners and fitted out others from home ports. Their voyages proving generally successful, they have added more vessels to their fishing fleet during the latter part of this year, and it is quite possible that, in the course of a few seasons. This book was released on 2017-03-29 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the United States Fish Commission, for 1900, Vol. 20: First Part The expedition of the United States Fish Commission steamer Fish Hawaii: to Porto Rico in the winter of 1898 - 99 had for its primary object a general study of the aquatic resources of that island. The fishes and fisheries naturally received most attention, but every opportunity was embraced to make extensive collections in all other groups of aquatic animals. A considerable collection of algae was also made. As stated in the preface to this Bulletin, these collections were assigned, for study and report, to specialists in the various groups. Seventeen reports have been received from those who kindly undertook the critical study of the collections assigned them. These reports were each first published as separate pamphlets, and all are now brought together in the two volumes constituting the Bulletin of the Fish Commis sion for 1900. Owing to conditions lying without the control of the Commission, no reports have been received from the specialists to whom the few remaining groups were assigned. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the United States Fish Commission, 1885, Vol. 5 Through the courtesy of Dr. T. H. Bean, curator of the ichthyological department of the United States National Museum, I have been enabled to study the male generative glands or Syrskian organs of a species of Anguilla, taken at Fire Island Beach, Great South Bay, long Island, by himself and party during the latter part of the summer of 1884. Four specimens handed to me for investigation proved to be males. Two of these bear the Museum number 35979, taken October 7, and two others, the number 35979, taken September 25. In all four I found the lobulated organs, first described by Syrski, in a condition of development, which leaves no doubt whatever that they are truly the male generative glands of the animal. In the females hitherto examined by the writer the generative folds attached along cither side of the mesentery on the dorsal wall of the abdomen are found as continuous folds, lobulated on their external faces, and are mostly composed of very young ova, fat cells, and very little or no connective tissue or ovarian stroma. In the generative organs of the male specimens alluded to above the glands extend along either side of the mesentery, in the same position as in the females, but the structure consists of very distinct reticule-shaped lobules, which connect at their bases with a common vas deferens, which extends along their bases and opens posteriorly into a triangular spare, which in turn opens into the common genito urinary outlet. Syrski states that these lobtilatcd organs are tilled with granules, which are confined to compartments separated by fibrous membrane. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the United States Fish Commission, Vol. 6: For 1886 The ova of this fish are large, and measure 'from 5 to 54 millime ters in diameter. They are dirty yellow, almost amber colored, and adherent to the surfaces of submerged objects, especially the under Sides of bowlders, under which the parent'fish Seem to clear away the mud and thus form a retreat in which they may spawn. The ova are attached to the roof of the little retreat prepared by the adults, where the eggs are found spread over an area about as large as one's hand in a Single layer, hardly in contact with each other, and to the number of about 200. A discoidal area about 3 millimeters in diameter at the upper surface of each egg glues the latter firmly to the supporting surface (fig. Fertilization of the ova probably occurs at the time of their extrusion by the female, which, like the female catfish, manifests no further in tercet in her offspring. The male at once assumes the care of the brood, and seems to remain in the vicinity until the young fish are hatched out and set free.
