Book The Walking Dead at Saqqara

Download or read book The Walking Dead at Saqqara written by Lara Weiss and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-06-21 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Funerary rituals and the cult of the dead are classics of research in religious studies, especially for ancient Egypt. Still, we know relatively little about how people interacted in daily life at the city of Memphis and its Saqqara necropolis in the late second millennium BCE. By focussing on lived ancient religion, we can see that the social and religious strategies employed by the individuals at Saqqara are not just means on the way to religious, post-mortem salvation, nor is their self-representation simply intended to manifest social status. On the contrary, the religious practices at Saqqara show in their complex spatiality a wide spectrum of options to configure sociality before and after one's own death. The analytical distinction between religion and other forms of human practices and sociality illuminates the range of cultural practices and how people selected, modified, or even avoided certain religious practices. As a result, pre-funerary, funerary and practices of the subsequent mortuary cults, in close connection with religious practices directed towards other ancestors and deities, allow the formation of imagined and functioning reminiscence clusters as central social groups at Saqqara, creating a heuristic model applicable also to other contexts.

Book Female Figurines from the Mut Precinct

Download or read book Female Figurines from the Mut Precinct written by Elizabeth A. Waraksa and published by Saint-Paul. This book was released on 2009 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Elizabeth A. Waraksa examines the ceramic female figurines excavated by John Hopkins at the Precinct of Mut in Luxor, Egypt between 2001 and 2004. The figurines date from the New Kingdom to the Late Period (ca. 1550-332 BCE). Ceramic figurines are frequently overlooked by archaeologists, art historians, and social historians because the lack the aesthetic qualities usually associated wit Egyptian art. However, the Hopkins-excavated figurines display features that mark them as standardized ritual objects. Waraksa argues that ceramic female figurines were produced in Workshops, utilized by magician/physicians in healing rituals, and regularly snapped and discarded at the end of their effective "lives". This is a new, broader interpretation for objects that have previously been considered as toys, dolly, concubine figures, and - most recently - votive "fertility figurines"."--Publisher's website

Book A Royal Book of Protection of the Saite Period

Download or read book A Royal Book of Protection of the Saite Period written by Paul F. O'Rourke and published by Yale Egyptology. This book was released on 2015-12-31 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new study offers a comprehensive examination of a unique manuscript, a Late Period hieratic papyrus in the Brooklyn Museum. This document comprises a compilation of seventeen individual prophylactic texts whose anatomical focus is the ear. Many of the texts specifically state that they are intended for the protection of the ears of a king named Psamtik, a historical figure who ruled Egypt in the seventh century BCE. The fact that this papyrus was created to serve a sole purpose and function, the protection of the ear, distinguishes it noticeably from earlier Egyptian medical and magical texts that are largely encyclopedic and were intended to serve a broad range of purposes. The present study contains an introduction and full translation with extensive philological and textual commentary, as the texts of this papyrus are rich in mythological allusions. The commentaries are largely based on comparison with contemporary and older Egyptian texts that, although not direct parallels as there are none, serve nonetheless as a rich resource for comparative analysis that has led to a more informed reading of this important document.

Book Agroforestry for Natural Resource Management

Download or read book Agroforestry for Natural Resource Management written by Ian Nuberg and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2009-05-18 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its early days, agroforestry may have been viewed as the domain of the 'landcare enthusiast'. Today, integrating trees and shrubs into productive farming systems is seen as a core principle of sustainable agriculture. Agroforestry for Natural Resource Management provides the foundation for an understanding of agroforestry practice in both high and low rainfall zones across Australia. Three major areas are discussed: environmental functions of trees in the landscape (ecosystem mimicry, hydrology, protection of crops, animals and soil, biodiversity, aesthetics); productive functions of trees (timber, firewood, pulp, fodder, integrated multi-products); and the implementation of agroforestry (design, evaluation, establishment, adoption, policy support). The book also includes a DVD that features videos on forest measurement and harvesting, a Farm Forestry Toolbox and many regionally specific agroforestry resources. Written by leading researchers and practitioners from around Australia, Agroforestry for Natural Resource Management will be an essential resource for students in agroforestry courses, as well as a valuable introduction to the field for professionals in related areas.

Book Indigenous Legal Judgments

Download or read book Indigenous Legal Judgments written by Nicole Watson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-27 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of key legal decisions affecting Indigenous Australians, which have been re-imagined so as to be inclusive of Indigenous people’s stories, historical experience, perspectives and worldviews. In this groundbreaking work, Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars have collaborated to rewrite 16 key decisions. Spanning from 1889 to 2017, the judgments reflect the trajectory of Indigenous people’s engagements with Australian law. The collection includes decisions that laid the foundation for the wrongful application of terra nullius and the long disavowal of native title. Contributors have also challenged narrow judicial interpretations of native title, which have denied recognition to Indigenous people who suffered the prolonged impacts of dispossession. Exciting new voices have reclaimed Australian law to deliver justice to the Stolen Generations and to families who have experienced institutional and police racism. Contributors have shown how judicial officers can use their power to challenge systemic racism and tell the stories of Indigenous people who have been dehumanised by the criminal justice system. The new judgments are characterised by intersectional perspectives which draw on postcolonial, critical race and whiteness theories. Several scholars have chosen to operate within the parameters of legal doctrine. Some have imagined new truth-telling forums, highlighting the strength and creative resistance of Indigenous people to oppression and exclusion. Others have rejected the possibility that the legal system, which has been integral to settler-colonialism, can ever deliver meaningful justice to Indigenous people.

Book The Senedjemib Complex The Mastabas of Senedjemib Inti G 2370 Khnumenti G 2374 and Senedjemib Mehi G 2378

Download or read book The Senedjemib Complex The Mastabas of Senedjemib Inti G 2370 Khnumenti G 2374 and Senedjemib Mehi G 2378 written by Edward Brovarski and published by Museum of Fine Arts Boston. This book was released on 2001 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume study of the Senedjemib Complex at Giza by Edward Borovarski owes a great debt to the work of Richard Lepsius in the mid-19th century and George A Reisner who excavated there in the early 20th century. The tombs of Senedjemib Inti (G2370), Khnumenti (G2374) and Senedjemib Mahi (G2378) which form the focus of this publication are three of the largest tombs in the complex, located at the northwest corner of the Great Pyramid. Excavations in 1912-13 revealed that the tombs of Mahi and Inti formed part of a great complex of family tombs erected around a paved court, and that four generations of the Senedjemib family served as viziers of Egypt and royal architects over a hundred year period in the later old Kingdom. Voluem one includes a complete history and description of all three tombs. Through the decoration and architecture of these tombs Brovarski traces the increasing trend in the elaboration of family tombs from the end of the fifth dynasty to the end of the sixth. Volume one also contains two lengthy autobiographical inscriptions.
