Book Structural Control

Download or read book Structural Control written by U. Leipholz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of "structural control", which had already experienced some attention through publications, for example by Roorda, Yao, Yang, Abdel-Rohman, Leipholz etc. , mostly in journals of ASCE, was given its fIrst international forum at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, via an ruTMf - Symposium held in June, 1979. This very successful event gathered experts from a variety of technical and theoretical domains in which control plays tradi tionally an essential role and was meant to present the new idea of structural control to a broad audience, thus triggering interest and commitment as well as cross-fertilization. However, the peculiarities of structural control were already sumciently well pointed out and stressed by those participants of the symposium who had devoted themselves earlier to this specwc topic for some time. The result of presentations and discussions are collected in a set of Proceedings entitled "Structural Control", published by North - Holland Publishing Company and the Solid Mechanics Division (SMD) of the University of Waterloo. The stimulation following this fIrst symposium was quite noticeable in the literature and led to the conviction of many researchers that after a reasonable period of time, a second meeting should be held to collect the fruits produced by the intermediate efforts of those working with increased emphasis on structural control. Therefore, Professors J. T. P. Yao, Department of Civil Engineering, Purdue University and H. H. E.

Book Seismic Architecture

Download or read book Seismic Architecture written by Mentor Llunji and published by MSPROJECT. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is arguably the most comprehensive book on the subject of architectural-structural design decisions that influence the seismic performance of buildings. It explores the intersection between the architecture and the structural design through the lens of earthquake engineering. The main aim of this unique book, written by renowned engineer M.Llunji, is to explain in the simplest terms, the architecture and structure of earthquake-resistant buildings, using many practical examples and case studies to demonstrate the fact that structures and buildings react to earthquake forces mainly according to their form, configuration and material. The purpose of this book is to introduce a new perspective on seismic design,a more visual, conceptual and architectural one, to both architects and engineers. In a word, it is to introduce architectural opportunities for earthquake resistant- buildings, treating seismic design as a central architectural issue. A non-mathematical and practical approach emphasizing graphical presentation of problems and solutions makes it equally accessible to architectural and engineering professionals. The book will be invaluable for practicing engineers, architects, students and researches. .More than 500 illustrations/photographs and numerous case studies. Seismic Architecture covers: • Earthquake effects on structures • Seismic force resisting systems • Advanced systems for seismic protection • Architectural/structural configuration and its influence on seismic response • Contemporary architecture in seismic regions • Seismic response of nonstructural elements • Seismic retrofit and rehabilitation of existing buildings • Seismic architecture.

Book Geospatial Techniques in Urban Hazard and Disaster Analysis

Download or read book Geospatial Techniques in Urban Hazard and Disaster Analysis written by Pamela S. Showalter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-11-11 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the second in a series that examines how geographic information te- nologies (GIT) are being implemented to improve our understanding of a variety of hazard and disaster situations. The main types of technologies covered under the umbrella of GIT, as used in this volume, are geographic information systems, remote sensing (not including ground-penetrating or underwater systems), and global po- tioning systems. Our focus is on urban areas, broadly de ned in order to encompass rapidly growing and densely populated areas that may not be considered “urban” in the conventional sense. The material presented here is also unabashedly applied – our goal is to provide GIT tools to those seeking more ef cient ways to respond to, recover from, mitigate, prevent, and/or model hazard and disaster events in urban settings. Therefore, this book was created not only with our colleagues in the academic world in mind, but also for hazards professionals and practitioners. We also believe graduate students will nd the material presented here of interest, as may upper division undergraduate students.

Book Analysis and Design of Bridges

Download or read book Analysis and Design of Bridges written by C. Yilmaz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Analysis and Design of Bridges held at ~e§me, lzmir, Turkey from 28 June 1982 to 9 July 1982 are contained in the present volume. The Advanced Study Institute was attended by 37 lecturers and participants from 10 different countries. The Organizing Committee consisted of Professors P. Gtilkan, A. C. Scordelis, S. T. Wasti and 9. Yl. lmaz. The guidelines set by NATO for the Advanced Study Institute require it to serve not only as an efficient forum for the dissemination of available advanced knowledge to a selected group of qualified people but also as a platform for the exploration of future research possibilities in the scientific or engineering areas concerned. The main topics covered by the present Advanced Study Institute were the mathematical modelling of bridges for better analysis and the scientific assessment of bridge behaviour for the introduction of improved design procedures. It has been our observation that as a result of the range and depth of the lectures presented and the many informal discussions that took place, ideas became fissile, the stimulus never flagged and many gaps in the engineering knowledge of the participants were "bridged". Here we particularly wish to mention that valuable informal presenta tions of research work were made during the course of the Institute by Drs. Friedrich, Karaesmen, Lamas and Parker.

Book Earthquake resistant Design Of Masonry Buildings

Download or read book Earthquake resistant Design Of Masonry Buildings written by Miha Tomazevic and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-07-05 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few decades, a considerable amount of experimental and analytical research on the seismic behaviour of masonry walls and buildings has been carried out. The investigations resulted in the development of methods for seismic analysis and design, as well as new technologies and construction systems. After many centuries of traditional use and decades of allowable stress design, clear concepts for limit state verification of masonry buildings under earthquake loading have recently been introduced in codes of practice.Although this book is not a review of the state-of-the-art of masonry structures in earthquake zones, an attempt has been made to balance the discussion on recent code requirements, state-of-the-art methods of earthquake-resistant design and the author's research work, in order to render the book useful for a broader application in design practice. An attempt has also been made to present, in a condensed but easy to understand way, all the information needed for earthquake-resistant design of masonry buildings constructed using traditional systems. The basic concepts of limit state verification are presented and equations for seismic resistance verification of masonry walls of all types of construction, (unreinforced, confined and reinforced) as well as masonry-infilled reinforced concrete frames, are addressed. A method for seismic resistance verification, compatible with recent code requirements, is also discussed. In all cases, experimental results are used to explain the proposed methods and equations. An important part of this book is dedicated to the discussion of the problems of repair, retrofit and rehabilitation of existing masonry buildings, including historical structures in urban centres. Methods of strengthening masonry walls as well as improving the structural integrity of existing buildings are described in detail. Wherever possible, experimental evidence regarding the effectiveness of the proposed strengthening methods is given.

This book was released on 2017-09-04 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the multi-axis substructure testing (MAST) system, a simulator developed at Swinburne University of Technology, Australia, which provides state-of-the-art technology for large-scale hybrid testing of structures under realistic scenarios depicting extreme events. The book also demonstrates the responses of physical specimens while they serve as part of the virtual computer model of the full structure subjected to extreme dynamic forces. Experimental studies using the MAST system are expected to enhance design and construction methods and significantly improve the repair and retrofitting of structures endangered by natural disasters and man-made hazards, providing a direct benefit to society by improving public safety and the re silience of the built environment. An additional benefit is increased sustainability in the form of reduced direct and indirect economic losses and social and environmental impacts in the face of extreme events. This book will be of interest to researchers and advanced practitioners in the fields of structural earthquake engineering, geotechnical earthquake engineering, engineering seismology, and experimental dynamics, including seismic qualification.

Book Seismic Isolation Strategies for Earthquake Resistant Construction

Download or read book Seismic Isolation Strategies for Earthquake Resistant Construction written by Mikayel Melkumyan and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earthquakes are catastrophic events that cause huge economic losses due to the vulnerability of the existing building stock. However, collapses of vulnerable buildings can be avoided if preventative measures, such as enhancement of their earthquake resistance, are implemented on time. This book will allow the reader to become acquainted with a number of unique, modern and cost-effective seismic isolation strategies, which can be easily, and in very short periods of time, and without interruption of the use of the buildings, implemented with high efficiency in existing buildings, making them earthquake proof. An important aspect here is that the book’s seismic isolation strategies are demonstrated on real examples of existing buildings with different structural systems, such as reinforced concrete frame buildings with shear walls and stone buildings with load-bearing walls. The cost-effectiveness of the suggested strategies is further proved by comparative analyses carried out for buildings both with and without seismic isolation systems.
