Book excerpt: Excerpt from Buller's Campaign: With the Natal Field Force of 1900 Why should a doctor write a book on war? The answer may not at first be apparent. Let us give it a little attention. Few, if any, books exist in which the position of a medical man on the battlefield is considered little is known about what first-aid work in the field really is little is known, even, by the initiated of what is to be expected. Like many other juniors, I had to cut my teeth, ' and it is partly with the hope of making this process easier to others than it was to me that I record my experiences. Had I had access in the beginning to a work similar to the present one, I should perhaps have obtained useful hints. Book Bullers Arms

Download or read book Bullers Arms written by Mark Horowitz and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-08-20 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1991, Time Magazine wrote that Americans were tired of the rat race and wanted a “simple life.” And no Americans were more desirous to find something personally meaningful than the 77 million Baby Boomers populating the place. Stumbling into the ancient village of Chagford amid the desolate Dartmoor in England, the author encounters villagers at a pub called Bullers Arms, who seem to embody that “simple life.” He meets them, and marvels at their camaraderie and stress-free life. Moreover, he demonstrates that even if Boomers discovered this life, they would still be haunted by a generational ghost that prevents a truly simple existence: Vietnam, a measuring stick for America since the 1970s and a collective guilt trip following every Boomer. Surely, such a “ghost” couldn’t inhabit a sleepy village on the moor? In fact, there is a ghost, as terrible as Vietnam, and the author reveals it. During his final stay, he also discovers that life is not that simple in Chagford, but that there is still a way to attain this elusive dream. Written in a lively, humorous style and traveling from past to present, Bullers Arms is a journey you will take with relish, again and again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The senior British generals of the Victorian era - men like Wolseley, Roberts, Gordon and Kitchener - were heroes of their time. As soldiers, administrators and battlefield commanders they represented the empire at the height of its power. But they were a disparate, sometimes fractious group of men. They exhibited many of the failings as well as the strengths of the British army of the late nineteenth-century. And now, when the Victorian period is being looked at more critically than before, the moment is right to reassess them as individuals and as soldiers. This balanced and perceptive study of these eminent military men gives a fascinating insight into their careers, into the British army of their day and into a now-remote period when Britain was a world power.

Book Sir Redvers H Buller V C The Story Of His Life And Campaigns

Download or read book Sir Redvers H Buller V C The Story Of His Life And Campaigns written by Lt.-Colonel Lewis William George Butler and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Sir Redvers Buller V.C. was among the most popular generals of his age, born in 1839 he was commissioned into the 60th Rifles in and started a military career that would last 40 years. His postings were many and varied; China in 1860, before many years in Canada and a distinguished part in the Red River expedition under Sir Garnet Wolseley in 1870 and under the same commander in the Second Ashanti War 1873-74. His next active command would earn him a Victoria Cross during the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879 at the head of the mounted infantry of Sir Evelyn Wood’s No. 4 Column. During the bloody defeat at Hlobane, Buller rallied the demoralized retreating rearguard, and rode back in the face of the hotly pusuing Zulu warriors to rescue men who had been unhorsed, not once, twice but three times! As if this was not enough the next day he fought at the victorious at the battle of Kambula, and later at the decisive battle of Ulundi. Buller left Africa a hero among his men and respected by his peers. His final command, during the Second Anglo-Boer War was much less successful; sent out to command and retrieve a situation already bungled, at the age of sixty, despite his protests. Facing a guerrilla war he instituted new tactics that would become standard practice to the modern day; use of cover, fire and movement, creeping barrages. However, these innovations were not enough to bridge the gap between his opponents and his hidebound troops, and he suffered a number of high profile defeats.
