Book Bulk Solids Handling

Download or read book Bulk Solids Handling written by C.R. Woodcock and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1988-08-31 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding ofthe properties and the handling characteristics of liquids and gases has long been regarded as an essential requirement for most practising engineers. It is therefore not surprising that, over the years, there has been a regular appearance of books dealing with the fundamentals of fluid mechanics, fluid flow, hydraulics and related topics. What is surprising is that there has been no parallel development of the related discipline of Bulk Solids Handling, despite its increasing importance in modern industry across the world. It is only very recently that a structured approach to the teaching, and learning, of the subject has begun to evolve. A reason for the slow emergence of Bulk Solids Handling as an accepted topic of study in academic courses on mechanical, agricultural, chemical, mining and civil engineering is perhaps that the practice is so often taken for granted. Certainly the variety of materials being handled in bulk is almost endless, ranging in size from fine dust to rocks, in value from refuse to gold, and in temperature from deep-frozen peas to near-molten metal.

Book Sampling of Powders and Bulk Materials

Download or read book Sampling of Powders and Bulk Materials written by Karl Sommer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book is based on the experience of sampling powders and bulk materials at institute of "Mechanische Verfahrens technik " , Karlsruhe University (Germany). sampling is understood to be the taking of samples from a material in order to obtain information about the composition of the total amount in respect of one or more attributes, such as metal content, ash content, moisture, particle size, particle shape etc. In the case of granular bulk material already comminuted or not, samples from tubs, trucks, bags or barrels. As granular material has a strong tendency to segregate, portions must be removed form these containers at many places. The book describes the basic theory behind sampling materials in powder or granular form. In addition to providing fundamental statistical data, it also highlights the mistakes that can arise in the different types of sampling techniques, such as suspensions, pellet cross-sections, sample dividing, or sampling according to number or weight. If the samples contain individual particles, comparable in size to the size of the sample itself then in addition to the number of individual elements in the sample and the type of sampling the particle size and particle size distribution will be further variables. This book will pay special attention to this fact important for the whole of powder technology, the chemical, pharmaceutical, food and and for mineral processing industry.

Book A Primer for Sampling Solids Liquids and Gases

Download or read book A Primer for Sampling Solids Liquids and Gases written by Patricia L. Smith and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does a marble manufacturer know that the color will be consistent throughout the products being made? How can you tell if liquid at the bottom of a container is the same consistency as at the top? How does a pellet manufacturer know if the pellets are consistently the same size? How does a chemical manufacturer know if the percent purity in a sample is representative of the whole batch? These and similar questions are answered in A Primer for Sampling Solids, Liquids, and Gases: Based on the Seven Sampling Errors of Pierre Gy. Statisticians are well trained in sampling techniques if the sample is well defined. Examples of such samples include industrial parts in manufacturing, invoices in business processes, and people in surveys. However, what if the sampling unit isn't well defined? What if you are sampling bulk material such as a pile of coal? Author Patricia L. Smith illustrates what to look for in sampling devices and procedures to obtain correct samples from bulk materials. She gives sampling guidelines that can be applied immediately and shows how to analyze protocols to uncover sampling problems. Smith presents the ideas of Pierre Gy in lay terms so that his concepts and principles can be easily grasped and applied. She conveys Gy's intuitive meaning while preserving his original ideas. Synonyms have been used for some technical terms to avoid confusion.

Book Sampling of Heterogeneous and Dynamic Material Systems

Download or read book Sampling of Heterogeneous and Dynamic Material Systems written by P.M. Gy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1992-10-23 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although sampling errors inevitably lead to analytical errors, the importance of sampling is often overlooked. The main purpose of this book is to enable the reader to identify every possible source of sampling error in order to derive practical rules to (a) completely suppress avoidable errors, and (b) minimise and estimate the effect of unavoidable errors. In short, the degree of representativeness of the sample can be known by applying these rules. The scope covers the derivation of theories of probabilistic sampling and of bed-blending from a complete theory of heterogeneity which is based on an original, very thorough, qualitative and quantitative analysis of the concepts of homogeneity and heterogeneity. All sampling errors result from the existence of one form or another of heterogeneity. Sampling theory is derived from the theory of heterogeneity by application of a probabilistic operator to a material whose heterogeneity has been characterized either by a simple scalar (a variance: zero-dimensional batches) or by a function (a variogram: one-dimensional batches). A theory of bed-blending (one-dimensional homogenizing) is then easily derived from the sampling theory. The book should be of interest to all analysts and to those dealing with quality, process control and monitoring, either for technical or for commercial purposes, and mineral processing. Although this book is primarily aimed at graduates, large portions of it are suitable for teaching sampling theory to undergraduates as it contains many practical examples provided by the author's 30-year experience as an international consultant. The book also contains useful source material for short courses in Industry.
