Above it the tops of the telegraph poles stuck out into the starlit night, marking the line of the road which wound over the desolate fen country. A few isolated houses stood like scattered islands in a sea of white cloud-houses in which the lights had long been extinguished, for it was nearing midnight, and the marsh folk do not sit up late. One house only proved the exception. In size and shape it was just as the others-a typical fenman's cottage. But from one side of it a diffused white glow shone faintly towards the line of telegraph posts. Above the mist the top room showed black and clear-cut. No light came from that window: the illumination came from the sitting-room below. In it was seated a very large young man. Between his knees he held a gun, whilst on the table in front of him lay the usual cleaning materials, flanked on the left by a large hunk of bread and cheese, and on the right by a tankard of ale. Behind him, on the hearth-rug, a spaniel lay curled up asleep. In front of him, and close to the door which communicated with the kitchen, a bulldog in a basket snored majestically: also in front of him, and close to the door which led into the diminutive hall, a wire-haired terrier hunted ecstatically in his dreams.

Book The Bulldog Drummond Encyclopedia

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the two world wars, a demobilized British ex-officer became the most beloved fictional character since Sherlock Holmes. Captain Hugh Drummond--better known as "Bulldog"--was the hero of seventeen novels and more than twenty films, stage plays, and BBC radio programs. The series was popular enough, in fact, to outlive the original author, Herman Cyril McNeile ("Sapper"), and to withstand the interruption occasioned by the Second World War before finally disappearing from the public eye in the 1950s, with the introduction of the James Bond character. The books are now out of print and only a few videos of the films can be found. This volume contains complete descriptions and detailed information on the characters and the world of Bulldog Drummond, a world rife with Bolsheviks, terrorists, spies, saboteurs, Packards, English Channel packets, Rolls-Royces, castles, mastiffs, and tarantulas. Information is replete on Sapper, Gerard Fairlie (the second author), and the several actors who starred as the legendary hero.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herman Cyril McNeile, MC (28 September 1888 – 14 August 1937), commonly known as Cyril McNeile and publishing under the name H. C. McNeile or the pseudonym Sapper, was a British soldier and author. Drawing on his experiences in the trenches during the First World War, he started writing short stories and getting them published in the Daily Mail. As serving officers in the British Army were not permitted to publish under their own names, he was given the pen name "Sapper" by Lord Northcliffe, the owner of the Daily Mail; the nickname was based on that of his corps, the Royal Engineers. After the war McNeile left the army and continued writing, although he changed from war stories to thrillers. In 1920 he published Bulldog Drummond, whose eponymous hero became his best-known creation. The character was based on McNeile himself, on his friend Gerard Fairlie and on English gentlemen generally. McNeile wrote ten Bulldog Drummond novels, as well as three plays and a screenplay.
