Download or read book Light Earth Building written by Franz Volhard and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest in clay as a building material – which has proved its sustainable characteristics over centuries – is growing. Light clay, which is light in weight and easy to work, is presented here as a versatile and forward-looking building material for modern computer-aided timber construction and the renewal of historic timber-framed buildings with clay infill. The balanced building physics properties of the material, which can be controlled through the mixing proportions, make it suitable for resource-efficient building in various different climate zones. Thermal storage, sound insulation, protection against moisture and fire in conventional timber construction are improved, and the construction is simplified. This standard publication describes detailed production methods, includes practical tips for self-building, and demonstrates the application of ready-made materials in modern construction. The book is aimed at architects, engineers, and their clients, as well as for listed building officers, manufacturers, tradesmen and self-builders

Download or read book Eco efficient Masonry Bricks and Blocks written by Fernando Pacheco-Torgal and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masonry walls constitute the interface between the building's interior and the outdoor environment. Masonry walls are traditionally composed of fired-clay bricks (solid or perforated) or blocks (concrete or earth-based), but in the past (and even in the present) they were often associated as needing an extra special thermal and acoustical insulation layer. However, over more recent years investigations on thermal and acoustical features has led to the development of new improved bricks and blocks that no longer need these insulation layers. Traditional masonry units (fired-clay bricks, concrete or earth-based blocks) that don't offer improved performance in terms of thermal and acoustical insulation are a symbol of a low-technology past, that are far removed from the demands of sustainable construction. This book provides an up-to-date state-of-the-art review on the eco-efficiency of masonry units, particular emphasis is placed on the design, properties, performance, durability and LCA of these materials. Since masonry units are also an excellent way to reuse bulk industrial waste the book will be important in the context of the Revised Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC which states that the minimum reuse and recycling targets for construction and demolition waste (CDW) should be at least 70% by 2020. On the 9th of March 2011 the European Union approved the Regulation (EU) 305/2011, known as the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and it will be enforced after the 1st of July 2013. The future commercialization of construction materials in Europe makes their environmental assessment mandatory meaning that more information related to the environmental performance of building materials is much needed. - Provides an authoritative guide to the eco-efficiency of masonry units - Examines the reuse of waste materials - Covers a range of materials including, clay, cement, earth and pumice

Download or read book BUILDING MATERIALS written by P.C. VARGHESE and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practice-oriented book, now in its second edition, presents a lucid yet comprehensive coverage of the engineering properties and uses of the materials commonly used in building construction in India. Profusely illustrated with tables and diagrams, the book brings into light the basics of building materials and their specifications. Besides giving information regarding the traditional building materials, the text now acquaints the reader with up-to-date and in-depth information pertaining to modern materials available in the market. The references to IS codes and standards make this text suitable for further study and field use. The second edition possesses some substantial changes in Chapters 12, 13, 14 and 20. Now, the book offers a new section on durability of concrete in Chapter 12; a modified section regarding revision of IS 10262 (1982) code on concrete mix design to IS 10262 (2009) and a new section on classification of exposure conditions in Chapter 13; and a new section relating to large advances made in concrete construction and repair chemicals in Chapter 14. Besides, the content of Chapter 20 has been completely updated, with a particular emphasis on the extensive use of aluminium in building construction. Primarily intended for the students pursuing undergraduate degree (B.E./B.Tech.) and diploma courses in civil engineering and architecture, the book, on account of lecture-based presentation of the subject, should also prove eminently utilitarian for the young teachers to use it in their classroom lectures as well as for practising engineers to get a clear understanding of the fundamentals of the subject. NEW TO THE SECOND EDITION Review questions at the end of each chapter enable the reader to recapitulate the topics Considerable attention is given on field practice Syllabus of laboratory work on construction materials and a model question paper (Anna University) are given in appendices to guide the reader.

Book excerpt: EYE IN THE SKY Cyclops One: America's most advanced airborne laser system. Capable of taking out a dozen missiles and warplanes from three hundred miles away, it will change the face of combat forever -- perhaps rendering war itself obsolete. Until the plane carrying it vanishes in a storm over the Canadian Rockies. With the specter of sabotage -- or something worse -- looming over the entire operation, America's top investigators are called onto the case. The best is Special Agent Andy Fisher, whose irreverent manner and unorthodox techniques have gained him the reputation as both a genius and a wild card within the FBI. As Fisher's investigation deepens, more questions emerge about the laser, the hyper-secretive private agency that developed it, and the true motives of those involved in the Cyclops One project -- a conspiracy that may end with the beginning of World War III....
