Book Scientific Drivers for ESO Future VLT VLTI Instrumentation

Download or read book Scientific Drivers for ESO Future VLT VLTI Instrumentation written by J. Bergeron and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-21 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the start of a long process to ultimately operate new advanced capabilities at Paranal that can keep up with the evergrowing need for larger and more complex astrophysical data sets. A modern instrument represents a very significant investment in cash, human resources and time. Such a meeting gives us a precious yardstick to evaluate the competitiveness of 1st-generation instruments and associated current and forthcoming proposals for 1st-generation upgrades. This is also crucial to orient the large research and development effort that will provide the very foundation on which 2nd-generation VLT instrumentation can be built. Finally, it represents a significant step towards defining the hopes and goals for the future Extremely Large Telescope to come. The first outcome of this meeting, already in progress, is outlined in the epilogue.

Book Early Evolution of the Universe and its Present Structure

Download or read book Early Evolution of the Universe and its Present Structure written by G.O. Abell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the last International Astronomical Union Symposium that dealt with matters cosmological, there have been dramatic advances, both on the observational and theoretical fronts. Modern high-efficiency detectors have made possible extensive magnitude-limited redshift surveys, which have permitted observational cosmologists to construct three-dimensional maps of large regions of space. What seems to emerge is a distribution of matter in extensive, flat, but probably filamentary, and possibly interconnected, superclusters, serving as interstices between vast voids in space. Meanwhile, theoretical ideas that were highly speculative a few years ago have begun to be taken seriously as possibly describing conditions in the very early universe. And brand new ideas, such as that of the inflationary universe, hold promise of solving outstanding observational, theoretical, and philosophical problems in cosmology. A new look at grand unified theories and concepts of supersymmetry have brought observational and theoretical cosmologists to a common meeting ground with modern particle physicists.

Book Origin Of Matter And Evolution Of Galaxies

Download or read book Origin Of Matter And Evolution Of Galaxies written by Shigeru Kubono and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-05-07 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on nucleosynthesis and chemical evolution of the universe. The discussion on the universe, using a common language of atomic elements and nucleosynthesis, is presented by leading figures from a wide variety of fields — astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology, nuclear physics and particle physics. One of the highlights is the paper on MACHO's by C Alcock, which was the first to be released to the world. Perspectives of the fields are also presented, such as the SUBARU project and the Radioactive Nuclear Beam Project at INS, University of Tokyo.

Book Star Formation in Galaxy Evolution Connecting Numerical Models to Reality

Download or read book Star Formation in Galaxy Evolution Connecting Numerical Models to Reality written by Nickolay Y. Gnedin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-09 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the elaborated and updated versions of the 24 lectures given at the 43rd Saas-Fee Advanced Course. Written by four eminent scientists in the field, the book reviews the physical processes related to star formation, starting from cosmological down to galactic scales. It presents a detailed description of the interstellar medium and its link with the star formation. And it describes the main numerical computational techniques designed to solve the equations governing self-gravitating fluids used for modelling of galactic and extra-galactic systems. This book provides a unique framework which is needed to develop and improve the simulation techniques designed for understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies. Presented in an accessible manner it contains the present day state of knowledge of the field. It serves as an entry point and key reference to students and researchers in astronomy, cosmology, and physics.

Book The Evolution of Galaxies

Download or read book The Evolution of Galaxies written by Marc Sauvage and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galaxies have a history. This has become clear from recent sky surveys which have shown that distant galaxies, formed early in the life of the Universe, differ from the nearby ones. New observational windows at ultraviolet, infrared and millimetric wavelengths (provided by ROSAT, IRAM, IUE, IRAS, ISO) have revealed that galaxies contain a wealth of components: very hot gas, atomic hydrogen, molecules, dust, dark matter ... A significant advance is expected due to new instruments (VLT, FIRST, XMM) which will allow one to explore the most distant Universe. Three Euroconferences have been planned to punctuate this new epoch in galactic research, bringing together specialists in various fields of Astronomy.
