Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current scarcity of expert systems where the reasoning is based on Bayesian probability theory may be due to misconceptions about probabilities found in the literature. As argued by Cheeseman (1985), these misconceptions have led to the attitude: "The Bayesian approach doesn't work - so here is a new scheme". Several of these expert systems based on ad hoc "probability" concepts have been successful in a number of ways, demonstrating the necessity of being able to handle uncertainty in medical expert systems. They also demonstrate the need for a theoretically sound handling of uncertainty. In Andersen et al. (1986) it was postulated that knowledge organized in a causal network can be used for a unified approach to the main tasks of a medical expert system: diagnosis, planning of tests and explanations. The present paper explores this postulate in a causal probabilistic network. It also provides a practical demonstration that the problems supposedly associated with probabilistic networks are either non-existent or that practical solutions can be found. This paper reports on the methods implemented in MUNIN* -an expert system for electromyography (EMG) (Andreassen et al. 1987). EMG is the diagnosis of muscle and nerve diseases through analysis of bioelectrical signals from muscle and nerve tissue. In Andreassen et al.

In the subsequent papers presented here, topics discussed include corrosion protection and histories, water mains, inhibitors, and expert systems and data handling.

Book Topics in Expert System Design

Download or read book Topics in Expert System Design written by C. Tasso and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expert Systems are so far the most promising achievement of artificial intelligence research. Decision making, planning, design, control, supervision and diagnosis are areas where they are showing great potential. However, the establishment of expert system technology and its actual industrial impact are still limited by the lack of a sound, general and reliable design and construction methodology. This book has a dual purpose: to offer concrete guidelines and tools to the designers of expert systems, and to promote basic and applied research on methodologies and tools. It is a coordinated collection of papers from researchers in the USA and Europe, examining important and emerging topics, methodological advances and practical experience obtained in specific applications. Each paper includes a survey introduction, and a comprehensive bibliography is provided.

Book Collection Of Essays On Complexity And Management A Proceedings Of The Summer School On Managerial Complexity

Download or read book Collection Of Essays On Complexity And Management A Proceedings Of The Summer School On Managerial Complexity written by Walter Baets and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-04-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tendency exists in management theory and practice today to accept that our linear and deterministic ways of thinking about managerial problems create more problems than they solve. In the field of strategy studies, for instance, one can observe a growing interest in learning and organisational flexibility — IT gives importance to distributed cognition and adaptive systems. Management theorists are keenly observing developments surrounding complexity and chaos theory in science, and management researchers are attempting to apply emerging theories to managerial problems.Although there are still a limited number of applications in the managerial world, the Santa Fe Institute and the Los Alamos Center for Nonlinear Studies (both in the US) have been active for several years in closely related fields and, more important, adopt a multidisciplinary approach. Such applied research is seldom present in academic management journals. It seems, however, that the business community is interested in the implications of chaos and complexity for management as well as adopting a multidisciplinary approach to strategy and organisational change. This volume, constituting the proceedings of the Summer School on Managerial Complexity, held in Granada, Spain, on 11-25 July 1998, will benefit students and researchers in chaos and dynamical systems.
