Book excerpt: Major General Don Carlos Buell stood among the senior Northern commanders early in the Civil War, led the Army of the Ohio in the critical Kentucky theater in 1861-62, and helped shape the direction of the conflict during its first years. Only a handful of Northern generals loomed as large on the military landscape during this period, and Buell is the only one of them who has not been the subject of a full-scale biography. A conservative Democrat, Buell viewed the Civil War as a contest to restore the antebellum Union rather than a struggle to bring significant social change to the slaveholding South. Stephen Engle explores the effects that this attitude--one shared by a number of other Union officers early in the war--had on the Northern high command and on political-military relations. In addition, he examines the ramifications within the Army of the Ohio of Buell's proslavery leanings. A personally brave, intelligent, and talented officer, Buell nonetheless failed as a theater and army commander, and in late 1862 he was removed from command. But as Engle notes, Buell's attitude and campaigns provided the Union with a valuable lesson: that the Confederacy would not yield to halfhearted campaigns with limited goals.

Book excerpt: Not long into their pregnancy, Brandon and Brittany Buell were given the heartbreaking news that their son, whom they had already named Jaxon, had a rare condition called Microhydranencephaly (meaning that he was missing part of his skull and most of his brain), and that he would likely die in utero or shortly after birth. If he did somehow survive, they were told he would suffer from severe neurological problems, would likely be deaf, blind, and unable to sit up, crawl, or communicate. Terminating the pregnancy was suggested on numerous occasions, but the Buells refused, opting instead to “choose life.” In Don’t Blink, Brandon and Brittany share the invaluable lessons that Jaxon—now approaching two—has taught them about the inherent value of every human life, the extraordinary power of faith, and the key to living each and every day to the fullest.

Download or read book Why This New Race written by Denise Buell and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2008-08-28 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denise Kimber Buell radically rethinks the origins of Christian identity, arguing that race and ethnicity played a central role in early Christian theology. Focusing on texts written before the legalization of Christianity in 313 C.E., including Greek apologetic treatises, martyr narratives, and works by Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Justin Martyr, and Tertullian, Buell shows how philosophers and theologians defined Christians as a distinct group within the Roman world, characterizing Christianness as something both fixed in its essence and fluid in its acquisition through conversion. Buell demonstrates how this view allowed Christians to establish boundaries around the meaning of Christianness and to develop the kind of universalizing claims aimed at uniting all members of the faith. Her arguments challenge generations of scholars who have refused to acknowledge ethnic reasoning in early Christian discourses. They also provide crucial insight into the historical legacy of Christian anti-Semitism and contemporary issues of race.

Book Steering Truth

Download or read book Steering Truth written by Buell Wesley Frazier and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-06-29 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the afternoon of November 22, 1963, a nineteen-year-old Buell Wesley Frazier was thrown up against the wall by two detectives and escorted to Dallas Police Station. His coworker and sometimes passenger to and from work Lee Harvey Oswald was the presumed assassin of President John F. Kennedy and Officer J. D. Tippit. It didn’t take Buell long to figure out that he was presumed guilty by association. Buell was afraid for himself and his family. Years of emotional pain built up. He had long forgotten how to trust people. He became resentful of the police force, and he doubted whether he would be ever to hold his head up in public and see people who believed his story. In the early nineties, Buell’s life was changed forever when he met a man who would become his best friend and confidant. Over the years, Buell emerged from the shadows and slowly found the peace and self-confidence he had longed to have. At the request of some friends, he began to talk to the public. From panel discussions to classrooms, Buell was surprised to learn that there were people who not only wanted to hear his story believed him too! This turn of events caused a paradigm shift in the way Buell saw himself. As a result, he became inspired by those people to write his complete story. For the first time in fifty years, he welcomes you to be a passenger on this road trip to learn how hard work, perseverance, self-belief, and resiliency became the pillars that supported the long transition of the boy he was to the man he became.
