Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is a total renunciation of clothing a prerequisite to attaining spiritual liberation? In Gender and Salvation, Padmanabh S. Jaini brings to light previously untranslated texts centering on a centuries-old debate between the two principal Jaina sects, the Digambaras and the Svetambaras. At the core of the debate is the question of whether gender-based differences of biology and life experience shape or limit an individual’s ability to accomplish the ultimate religious goal. For the Digambaras, the example of total nudity set by Mahavira (599–527 B.C.), the central spiritual figure of Jainism, mandates an identical practice for all who aspire to the highest levels of religious attainment. For the Svetambaras, the renunciation occurs purely on an internal level and is neither affected nor confirmed by the absence of clothes. Both sects agree, however, that nudity is not permitted for women under any circumstances. The Digambaras, therefore, believe that women cannot attain salvation, while the Svetambaras believe they can. Through their analysis of this dilemma, the Jaina thinkers whose texts are translated here demonstrate a level of insight into the material and spiritual constraints on women that transcends the particular question of salvation and relates directly to current debates on the effects of gender in our own society. Book excerpt: "In seeking to explore the interrelationships between, and mutual influence of, varieties of sexual stereotypes and religious views of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, Women in Buddhism succeeds in drawing our attention to matters of philosophical importance. Paul examines the 'image' of women which arise in a number of Buddhist texts associated with Mahayana and finds that, while ideally the tradition purports to be egalitarian, in actual practice it often betrayed a strong misogynist prejudice. Sanskrit and Chinese texts are organized by theme and type, progressing from those which treat the traditionally orthodox and negative to those which set forth a positive consideration of soteriological paths for women. . . . In Women in Buddhism, Diana Paul may be forcing our consideration of the problem of female enlightenment. Thus the main purport and accomplishment of her scholarship is revolutionary."—Philosophy East and West

Book excerpt: Jainism is a tradition which dates back thousands of years, which is unbelievably rich and profound, and which has certain unmistakable signs of identity. Contrary to what some might think, it is not in any sense a poor relation of Buddhism, nor is a strange, atheistic and ascetic sect within Hinduism. Jainism is, above all, the religion of non-violence (ahimsa), an ideal which all other religions of India were subsequently to make theirs and which was made universal by Gandhi in the 20th century. Like Buddhism, Jainism is a religion without God which paradoxically opens to the truly sacred in the deepest reaches of all living beings in the cosmos. And it is also the religion of non-absolutism (anekantavada), a particular form of philosophical pluralism, which seems astonishingly modern.

Book Blossoming in the Dark

Download or read book Blossoming in the Dark written by Nichollette Jones and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renunciation within South East Asian religious traditions, primarily Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, are gendered masculine. Unlike Hinduism and Buddhism, Jainism, in its doctrine, includes women as vital to the makeup and survival of the Jain community, ascetic and lay. Without female renunciants, a Jain sangha (community) cannot be established. Contrastingly, South East Asian women, including Jain women, are defined and described in relation to their familial ties, both natal and conjugal. As a result, in practice, despite religious doctrine, Jain women are primarily encouraged to aspire to the goals of motherhood and wifehood through promotion of the ideals and traits of the shravika (laywoman) and pativrata (devoted wife), instead of that of a sadhvi (fully ordained Jain nun). Despite masculine gendering and societal prescriptions, women occupy large numbers within the aforementioned renunciant communities. The navigation of religious patriarchal spaces is vital to understanding how South East Asian women wishing to renounce create alternative life options. This thesis seeks to contribute to the continuing academic discussion on female renunciation through its contribution and elucidation of the varying methods, techniques, pathways and societal values and norms Jain women have redefined, redirected, reorganized and implemented in order to enter the masculine gendered space of Jain renunciation. Jainism and its female renunciants have only recently entered into academic dialogue on South East Asian renunciation. While previous Jain scholars have provided ample insight and knowledge into the discursive constructions of Jain female renunciation, the practical and performative aspects of the practice have not received equal attention. This study, based on six months of ethnographic field research, explores, and examines the discursive and performative constructions of gender and renunciation amongst Jain female renouncers as presented by ordained women of the Svetambar Terapanth and Digambar Jain sadhvis. Through analysis of the personal narratives of Jain female renouncers, ritual and religious performances in the creation of female renunciant identities and subjectivities, this thesis provides insight and knowledge of how Jain women occupy and negotiate their anomalous position within the Jain community and Indian society at large.

Book Buddhism After Patriarchy

Download or read book Buddhism After Patriarchy written by Rita M. Gross and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys both the part women have played in Buddhism historically and what Buddhism might become in its post-patriarchal future. The author completes the Buddhist historical record by discussing women, usually absent from histories of Buddhism, and she provides the first feminist analysis of the major concepts found in Buddhist religion. Gross demonstrates that the core teachings of Buddhism promote gender equity rather than male dominance, despite the often sexist practices found in Buddhist institutions throughout history.

Book Status of Women Ascetics in Jaina and Buddhist Traditions

Download or read book Status of Women Ascetics in Jaina and Buddhist Traditions written by Archana Malik-Goure and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the context of Indian thought, freedom is primarily taken to mean freedom from suffering or duhkha arising out of ignorance. The common view held by all Indian thinkers is that ignorance of reality is the cause of our bondage and suffering. Moksha is regarded as the highest purushartha or goal of life. Jain and Buddhist religion have made a major impact on society through the path which leads to the cessation of suffering or which leads towards the liberation. There is a problem of the relation between women and spiritual liberation. This work examines the assumptions and the implications of this problem in detail. Hence, this work compares the similarities and differences between Jaina and Buddhist traditions with respect to women ascetics. This work also explores why both traditions did not want to give equality to women in the religious realm and thought from the women's perspective. A related question is whether this can be regarded as either a philosophical or a social problem. The spirit guiding this work is: "What if we just happen to be women? Gender is no obstacle to attaining sainthood." This work will helpful for those people who are interested in gender studies

Book Studies in Jaina History and Culture

Download or read book Studies in Jaina History and Culture written by Peter Flügel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-02-01 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last ten years have seen interest in Jainism increasing, with this previously little-known Indian religion assuming a significant place in religious studies. Studies in Jaina History and Culture breaks new ground by investigating the doctrinal differences and debates amongst the Jains rather than presenting Jainism as a seamless whole whose doctrinal core has remained virtually unchanged throughout its long history. The focus of the book is the discourse concerning orthodoxy and heresy in the Jaina tradition, the question of omniscience and Jaina logic, role models for women and female identity, Jaina schools and sects, religious property, law and ethics. The internal diversity of the Jaina tradition and Jain techniques of living with diversity are explored from an interdisciplinary point of view by fifteen leading scholars in Jaina studies. The contributors focus on the principal social units of the tradition: the schools, movements, sects and orders, rather than Jain religious culture in abstract. Peter Flügel provides a representative snapshot of the current state of Jaina studies that will interest students and academics involved in the study of religion or South Asian cultures.
