Book Inelastic Buckling of Shallow Spherical Shells Under External Pressure

Download or read book Inelastic Buckling of Shallow Spherical Shells Under External Pressure written by B. Sureshwara and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper the inelastic effect on the buckling load of a clamped shallow spherical shell subjected to an external pressure is investigated. A variational principle derived from a set of rate equilibrium equations and expressed in terms of Lagrangian variables is used to determine the critical pressure. This pressure is determined by a step-by-step numerical process based on a Rayleigh-Ritz technique. The spherical shell is idealized as a structure composed of four thin load-carrying layers of equal thickness and made of a work hardening material. The numerical results of the present analysis compare favorably with those of available experimental work. (Author).

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the nonlinear buckling of spherical shells under uniform external pressure. Such shells take the form of complete sphere, opening sphere, hemi sphere, spherical cap, multi-segment sphere, and tori-sphere. Experimental, analytical, and numerical approaches are implemented to perform the research. The work is intended for the professional researchers, teachers, and students whose research interest involves the instability of pressure vessels in civil, aero, and ocean engineering, as well as the corresponding technological staffs.

Book The Axisymmetric Buckling of Initially Imperfect Complete Spherical Shells

Download or read book The Axisymmetric Buckling of Initially Imperfect Complete Spherical Shells written by Tatsuzo Koga and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical investigation of the axisymmetric buckling of complete thin-walled spherical shells under uniform external pressure is undertaken to determine the effect of axisymmetric initial imperfections. In the analysis, the complete spherical shell is divided into two parts; the shallow cap in which the initial imperfection exists, and the remaining portion of the shell most of which deforms in simple contraction. The rotation of the meridian of the cap is assumed in the form of a polynomial function. Four matching conditions are enforced at the juncture of the cap and remainder. The total potential energy of the complete spherical shell is minimized in accordance with the Rayleigh-Ritz approximation method. Two types of initial imperfections are studied; one is an axisymmetric dimple, and the other is a spherical region whose radius of curvature is greater than that of the perfect spherical shell. The maximal values of the pressure parameter rho in the equilibrium state before snap-through were calculated for various values of the geometric parameter lambda, which is proportional to the angular extent of the imperfection for a given radius-to-thickness ratio, and the imperfection amplitude parameter delta, which is the ratio of the initial deviation of the shell mid-surface at the axis of rotation to the wall-thickness. The results of numerical computations show that for all values of delta the lowest buckling pressure is reached when lambda is about 4. (Author).

Book The Buckling of Clamped Shallow Spherical Shells Under Uniform Pressure

Download or read book The Buckling of Clamped Shallow Spherical Shells Under Uniform Pressure written by Robert Reid Parmerter and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of the buckling of clamped spherical shells under uniform external pressure is examined. A theoretical study is carried out to determine if asymmetrical modes participate in the snap-through process. It is shown that asymmetrical buckling does occur in a certain range of a geometric parameter, at loads which are significantly less than those predicted from symmetrical theory. Additional effects can be expected if the shell has symmetrical or asymmetrical imperfections, however, the present study considers only the perfect shell. Experiments were carried out with copper shells fabricated by an electroforming process. The initial imperfections in the test specimens were of the order of 1/10 of the thickness. The buckling loads of these shells exeeded the loads which have previously been reported by as much as a factor of two at higher values of the geometrical parameter. Good agreement is found between theory and experiment, and with the recently published asymmetrical theory of Huang. (Author).

Book Buckling of Circular Cylindrical Shells Under External Pressure

Download or read book Buckling of Circular Cylindrical Shells Under External Pressure written by Stanford University. Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A set of uncoupled differential equations of equilibrium based on Sanders' assumptions was developed which includes the effects of the prestresses. Both the Sanderstype equations and Donnell's equations are solved for the buckling pressure of shells under laterial and hydrostatic pressure. It is found that restriction of the axial displacement has considerable influence upon the buckling pressure. Moreover, the more rigorous Sanders-type equations yield lower buckling pressures than Donnell's equations. (Author).

Book Some Recent Studies of the Buckling of Thin Shells

Download or read book Some Recent Studies of the Buckling of Thin Shells written by Stanford University. Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a brief summary of the development of present knowledge of the buckling process of thin shells, the results of recent investigations are discussed in some detail. In particular, information is given on analyses of the maximum stress a circular cylindrical shell of infinite or finite length can carry in axial compression in the presence of an initial deviation of the shell wall from the perfect cylindrical shape, and on the number of circumferential waves into which finite cylindrical shells buckle. The maximum external pressure is calculated that can be supported by a complete spherical shell in the presence of known deviations of its wall from the perfect spherical shape. The results of recent experiments on cylindrical and complete spherical shells are also presented. Recommendations are made for the practical calculation of the buckling stresses of circular cylindrical shells and spherical shells. (Author).

Book Buckling of a Complete Spherical Shell Under Uniform External Pressure

Download or read book Buckling of a Complete Spherical Shell Under Uniform External Pressure written by Harry E. Rauch and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-linear axisymmetric bucking of a complete spherical elastic shell under uniform external pressure is treated numerically. Particular attention is given to the lower critical load, which is the theoretical least failure load. Among the new results are the evaluation of this load for thinner shells than those treated in the existing literature; in particular, the values 6.73% and 4.9% of the classical linear buckling loads are obtained for the radius-to-thickness ratios 100 and 200, respectively. The shapes of the buckled shells are computed for the first time in an unexpected hint that there is an asymptotic (ratios-to-thickness ration-independent) buckled shape. Numerical solution is by means of spectral (Galerkin) expansions of up to 60 modes in associated Legendre functions of order one applied to the quadratically non-linear version of E. Reissner's equations. (Author).

Book excerpt: The feasibility of utilizing mathematical programing techniques for determining stable equilibrium states of nonlinear structural systems is explored. The physical problem chosen for evaluation of this methodology was the nonlinear behavior of a shallow spherical shell subjected to uniform pressure. The procedure found most useful was a hybrid method consisting principally of a generalized Newton-Raphson technique with intermittent application of the conjugate-gradient search technique. The variation of buckling pressure with changes in edge restraint and shell geometry is found for a uniformly loaded shell.
