Download or read book The Champion written by Cosmin Stefan Georgescu and published by Europa Edizioni. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georgescu’s Champion belongs to that rare and precious kind of winners who stand out from the crowd and yet inspire with their own unique example of life, which is inextricably bound to both the light of the scenes and the need to exceed physical limitations in order to create their own myth. By tracing the lines of the first steps to the narration of the most mature and captivating competitions, Georgescu makes the reader enter the deepest thoughts of his athlete, who is always aware to represent more than the attempt to reach a personal achievement, or the intimate claim of redeeming the soul from the sufferings and the sacrifices of the past, thus showing the strength which proudly soars from the banner of a whole nation in the moment of a single movement. Looking out of place, in the search for infinity, The Champion is an ode to remembrance and the mystifying power of glory. Cosmin Stefan Georgescu was born in Romania, in 1971. From an early age he was fascinated by words. He liked listening to his parents reading him bedtime stories, he used to learn a lot of poems by heart and recite them proudly. His first models were his parents, both of them teachers. However, Cosmin did not follow in his parents’ footsteps and decided to become a doctor. He graduated from Carol Davilla Medical University in Bucharest in 1997. In 2015 he went to France and ever since he has been living and working there. He wrote and published the following books in Romania, UK and France: The Kiss that Severs Us, Advice I Would Give to No One, Aphorisms Made at Giurgiu, The Tin Ring, Letters to God returned to sender, Conseils que je ne donnerais à personne, The Maiorescunians, Full-moon above the Vosges, Animus in Anima. He has won two awards: the Romanian Prize “Sentimental Twilight” Literary revue, with his works on aphorisms in 2020 and the Critics’ Prize with the work Letters to God return to sender of the Switzerland Literary Prize in 2021.

Download or read book Mustaches and Mayhem Charlie O s Three Time Champions written by Chip Greene and published by SABR, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-09-17 with total page 1094 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In modern baseball history, only one team not named the New York Yankees has ever won three consecutive World Series. That team was the Oakland Athletics, who captured major league baseball’s crown each year from 1972 through 1974. Led by such superstars as future Hall of Famers Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter and Rollie Fingers, in the final years before free agency and the movement of playersfrom one team to another forever changed the game, the Athletics were a largely homegrown aggregate of players who joined the organization when the team called Kansas City its home, developed as teammates in the minor leagues, and came of age together in Oakland. But it was the way in which they did it that immortalized those teams. For if the story of the Oakland Athletics’ championships is that of one of baseball’s greatest teams, it’s also the story of enigmatic owner Charles O. Finley and how those players succeeded in spite of Finley’s larger-than-life persona and meddlesome ways. Indeed, before the Yankees’ George Steinbrenner, there was Charles Oscar Finley, of the Athletics. Featuring the contributions of 46 members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), Mustaches and Mayhem: Charlie O’s Three-Time Champions shares the stories of each of the roster players on each of the A’s championship teams, in addition to the managers, coaches, Finley himself, the team’s radio announcer, and even Charlie O, the mule, Finley’s legendary mascot. Summaries of each spring training and World Series, too, will complete the tale of one of baseball’s most colorful and successful teams. Biographies included: Charlie Finley, Charlie O (the Mule), Sal Bando, Vida Blue, Bert Campaneris, Rollie Fingers, Dick Green, Dave Hamilton, Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson, Ted Kubiak, Blue Moon Odom, Joe Rudi, Gene Tenace, Jerry Adair (coach), Matty Alou, Brant Alyea, Dwain Anderson, Curt Blefary, Bob Brooks, Larry Brown, Ollie Brown, Orlando Cepeda, Ron Clark, Tim Cullen, Dave Duncan, Mike Epstein, Adrian Garrett, Larry Haney, Mike Hegan, George Hendrick, Ken Holtzman, Joe Horlen, Vern Hoscheit (coach), Mike Kilkenny, Darold Knowles, Allan Lewis, Bob Locker, Angel Mangual, Gonzalo Marques, Marty Martinez, Dal Maxvill, Denny McLain, Bill McNulty, Don Mincher, Irv Noren (coach), Bill Posedel (coach), Jim Roland, Diego Segui, Art Shamsky, Don Shaw, Bill Voss, Gary Waslewski, Dick Williams, Glenn Abbott, Jesus Alou, Mike Andrews, Pat Bourque, Rico Carty, Billy Conigliaro, Vic Davalillo, Chuck Dobson, Ray Fosse, Rob Gardner, Phil Garner, Tim Hosley, Deron Johnson, Jay Johnstone, Paul Lindblad, Rich McKinney, Jose Morales, Bill North, Horacio Pina, Wes Stock (coach), Manny Trillo, Alvin Dark, John Donaldson, Bob Hofman, Jim Holt, Leon Hooten, Bill Parsons, Gaylen Pitts, Champ Summers, Claudell Washington, Herb Washington, Bob Winkles, and Monte Moore (broadcaster).

Download or read book The Uncrowned Champs written by Dave Steidel and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-11-24 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the inception of the Super Bowl—football’s faceoff of the best teams to find out who is truly superior—the two leagues (AFL and NFL) would each have their own championship game. This bad blood stuck around until the merger of the leagues in 1966. Since beginning play in 1960, the American Football League had always taken a backseat to the National Football League. It was considered a secondary league; the best and most skilled players went to the more powerful NFL, which had been around for nearly fifty years. During the 1963 NFL season, the Chicago Bears reigned supreme, commanding every team that crossed their path. But were they the best team in football? If you asked the San Diego Chargers of the AFL, that answer would be a resounding no. The Uncrowned Champs follows the incredible season of the ’63 Chargers as they transformed their roster from a 4–10 finish in 1962 to a conquering force that ripped through the AFL. With a week-to-week breakdown, Dave Steidel chronicles the team’s innovative, high-scoring, juggernaut offense and top-rated defense that featured a fearsome, foursome front-line. Unfortunately for football fans, the Bears and Chargers never met on the field that year. But thanks to new technology, we are able to conduct a computer simulation of what would have been the first Super Bowl game and answer the fifty-year-old question of who was the best football team of ’63? Featuring a foreword by Chargers Hall of Fame wide-receiver Lance Alworth, The Uncrowned Champs is a terrific look into the pre–Super Bowl era, when two rival leagues fought for dominance in the public’s eye. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing is impossible for God Frustrated, because everything I tried to do on my own just wasn't panning out. Disappointed, because I knew I had the answers to life's question. But lo and behold, once again I was wrong as two left shoes. Something was missing, and I just couldn't figure it out. I frowned on the thought of asking anyone for advice. Just the thought of being talked about and laughed at behind my back weren't thoughts I needed on my mind at this time. On the outside, everything concerning me looked just fine, but on the inside, I was broken and I needed some fixing. I needed some help. Just when I was on the edge of throwing in the towel and calling it quits of trying to find myself, my purpose in life. I got the call to join the team. I answered the call, and the soft but faint voice told me that my prayers have been heard and answered. You will have an assignment, a purpose to fulfill. But first, you must complete your training. So my question was, what training do I have to do? You will have to give God something to work with because God loves a champion.

Book excerpt: A poignant coming-of-age novel for middle-grade readers about a young boy obsessed with baseball whose life changes drastically when war comes to his Vancouver Japanese community. Ten-year-old Kenny (Kenji in Japanese) worships his older brother, Mickey (Mitsuo), a baseball hero whose outstanding performance on the Asahi baseball team has given him fame and popularity. Despite Kenny's suspected heart condition, he is determined to practice secretly with Mickey so he, too, can one day try out for the Asahi. But world events soon overtake life in this quiet community. When Japan attacks Pearl Harbor in 1941, everything for Kenny and his family spirals out of control: schools are closed, businesses are confiscated, fathers are arrested and sent to work camps in the BC interior and mothers and children are relocated to internment camps. When Mickey is arrested for a small act of violence, Kenny manages to keep his family's spirits up, despite the deplorable conditions in camp. Coming across a "vacant" field covered with scrap wood, broken shakes and torn tar paper, Kenny gets permission to clear it and convert it into a baseball field. One by one, the boys in the camp pitch in, and the work gives purpose to their long days. Kenny's persistence, hard work and big dreams shape the teen he is to become in this story of happiness found despite all odds.
