Book Bubble Chamber Study of Dimuon Production by Neutrinos Using the Phase 2 EMI and a Dichromatic Beam

Download or read book Bubble Chamber Study of Dimuon Production by Neutrinos Using the Phase 2 EMI and a Dichromatic Beam written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors propose to examine in detail, using the 15-foot bubble chamber and an improved (Phase II) EMI, the characteristics of 'dimuon' events produced by neutrinos. A light neon-hydrogen filling (30% neon atoms) provides adequate target mass, good track measurements, and high detection efficiency for photons and electrons. Thus e-[mu] and e-e dileptons, as well as dimuons, can be observed with good efficiency. They estimate a yield of 100 detected dimuons in a 200 K picture expoture. They assume 400 GeV operation, 1 x 1013 protons/pulse, and a two-horn dichromatic beam focusing 100 ± 10 GeV/c mesons. If dimuons are made by neutrinos ≥ 30 GeV, then the yield from this dichromatic beam is about half the yield from a wide-band beam. Knowledge of neutrino energy is important in dimuon analysis. An improved two-plane EMI, as proposed by the UH-LBL group, would provide about 1 kg/cm2 absorption thickness for particles above 10 GeV/c, thus ensuring excellent dimuon identification. Another proposed EMI improvement, the Internal Picket Fence (IPF), is designed to eliminate EMI random background (mainly neutrino-induced in the internal coil-absorber). this should greatly simplify EMI analysis and reduce the misidentification of low momentum hadrons as muons. Thus they also expect improved efficiency for identification of neutral current events and slow (wide-angle) muons with this Phase II EMI.

This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fermilab fifteen-foot bubble chamber/two-plane External Muon Identifier (EMI) hybrid detector filled with Ne(47% atomic)-H2 is exposed to the quadrupole triplet beam ( = 89 GeV, = 60 GeV). In 326,000 pictures there are 10,148 neutrino and 1773 antineutrino charged current events with two-plane EMI muon identification and muon momenta> 4 GeV/c. In this sample there are 55 .mu.−.mu. X, 11 .mu.−.mu.−X and 0 .mu.mu.+X candidates with muon momenta> 4 GeV/c. The like-sign events are consistent with background. The opposite-sign dimuons occur at R/sub .mu. .mu./ = 0.35 +- 0.10% of the single muon rate. The .nu./sub .mu./-induced .mu.−.mu./sup +/ rate is 0.20 +- 0.15% below E/sub nu//sub .mu./ = 100 GeV and 0.50 +- 0.30% above 100 GeV. In the opposite-sign dimuons there are 10 candidates with an associated V° implying 0.76 +- 0.36 neutral strange particle per opposite-sign dimuon event. The production rate, excess of neutral strange particles, and kinematic distributions of the dimuon events are consistent with the charm model predictions. 56 references.

Book excerpt: By providing an intense, well controlled, well characterized, narrow beam of muon neutrinos (?????????s) and electron antineutrinos (–?e’s) from the decay of muons (?−??2019?s) in a storage ring, a neutrino factory can advance neutrino physics beyond the current round of approved and proposed experiments using conventional neutrino beams produced from a beam of decaying pions and kaons [1, 2]. There is no other comparable single clean source of electron neutrinos (from the decay of ?+’s) or antineutrinos. A muon storage ring producing 1019 to 1021 muon decays per year should be feasible. These intense neutrino beams can be used to study neutrino oscillations and possible CP violation. An entry-level muon storage ring that could provide 1019 decays per year would allow a determination of the sign of ?m231and a first measurement of sin22?13 for favorable values of this parameter. An improved muon storage ring system that could provide 1020 muon decays per year would allow measurement of sin22?13 to 1̃0−4. A high performance muon storage ring capable of providing more than 1020 muon decays per year would allow the exciting possibility of a measurement of CP violation in the leptonic sector. An intense cold muon beam at the front end of a neutrino factory could enable a rich variety of precision muon physics, such as a more precise measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment (g – 2) and searches for ? -> e ? and ?−N -> e− N conversion [3]. In addition, colliding beams of ?+ and ?− in a muon collider can provide an effective ?Higgs factory? or multi-TeV center-of-mass energy collisions [4]. A muon collider will be the best way to study the Higgs bosons associated with supersymmetric theories and may be necessary to discover them. Two neutrino factory feasibility studies have been carried out in the U.S. [5, 6]. International design efforts are now under way. The International Neutrino Factory and Superbeam Scoping Study (ISS) [7] began at the NuFact05 Workshop in June 2005 with the goals of elaborating the physics case, defining the baseline options for such a facility and its neutrino detectors, and identifying the required R&D program to lay the foundations for a complete design study proposal, and an International Design Study of the Neutrino Factory is beginning. These studies entail iterative cost and technical difficulty evaluations, thereby providing guidelines for the advancing R&D program. One of the central subsystems of a neutrino factory or muon collider is the muon cooling system. The muon beam is cooled to increase the phase space density and allow the muons to pass through smaller apertures, thus reducing the cost of the following accelerator systems. This cooling is accomplished through ionization cooling, in which the beam is passed through liquid hydrogen absorbers and then accelerated in RF cavities to restore the longitudinal momentum. Ionization cooling was proposed more than twenty years ago [8] but has not yet been demonstrated in practice. The International Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) [9, 10] seeks to build and operate a muon-cooling device of a design proposed in Feasibility Study-II [6]. In addition to cooling the muons, MICE includes apparatus to measure the performance of the device. The experiment will be carried out by a collaboration of physicists from the U.S., Europe, and Japan at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the U.K. MICE will begin operation in late 2007. Successful performance of the MICE experiment will provide the understanding needed to design a complete neutrino factory, in which the muons are cooled, accelerated, circulated in a storage ring, and decay to produce the neutrino beam. The first neutrino factory might be built in the U.S., Europe, or Japan. A Muon Collider Task Force (MCTF) has recently been organized at Fermilab.

Book ON THE ANALYSIS OF BUBBLE CHAMBER TRACKS

Download or read book ON THE ANALYSIS OF BUBBLE CHAMBER TRACKS written by and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its invention by Glaser in 1953, the bubble chamber has become a most valuable tool in high-energy physics. It combines a number of advantages of various older methods of particle detection: it offers high spatial resolution, rapid accumulation of data, some time resolution, and some choice of the nucleus whose interaction one wants to study (bubble chambers have been made to operate with a large number of different liquids, including H2, D2, He, Xe, and several hydrocarbons). In order to exploit the advantages of spatial resolution and rapid data accumulation, high-speed high-precision analysis procedures must be developed. In this article they discuss some of the problems posed by such analysis. The discussion is based largely on experience gained in performing hydrogen bubble chamber experiments with the University of California's Bevatron (6-Bev proton synchrotron).
