Book The Art of Vase Painting in Classical Athens

Download or read book The Art of Vase Painting in Classical Athens written by Martin Robertson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his new book, Professor Martin Robertson - author of A History of Greek Art (CUP 1975) and A Shorter History of Greek Art (CUP 1981) - draws together the results of a lifetime's study of Greek vase-painting, tracing the history of figure-drawing on Athenian pottery from the invention of the 'red-figure' technique in the later archaic period to the abandonment of figured vase-decoration two hundred years later. The book covers red-figure and also work produced over the same period in the same workshops in black-figure and other techniques, especially that of drawing in outline on a white ground. The book is intended as a companion volume to Sir John Beazley's The Development of Attic Black-figure (originally published in 1951 by California University Press), and as an examination and defence of Beazley's methods and achievements. This book is a major contribution to the history of Greek vase-painting and anyone seriously interested in the subject - whether scholar, student, curator, collector or amateur - will find it essential reading.

Book Images of Ancient Greek Pederasty

Download or read book Images of Ancient Greek Pederasty written by Andrew Lear and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lavishly illustrated book brings together, for the first time, all of the different ways in which vase-painting portrays or refers to pederasty, from scenes of courtship, foreplay, and sex, to scenes of Zeus with his boy-love Ganymede, to painted inscriptions praising the beauty of boys. The book shows how painters used the language of vase-painting to cast pederasty in an idealizing light, portraying it as part of a world in which beautiful elite males display praiseworthy attitudes, such as moderation, and engage in approved activities, such as hunting, athletics, and the symposium. The book also incorporates a comprehensive catalogue of relevant vase-paintings, compiled by noted archaeologist Keith DeVries. It is the most comprehensive treatment available of an institution that has few modern parallels.

Book Athens Etruria and the Many Lives of Greek Figured Pottery

Download or read book Athens Etruria and the Many Lives of Greek Figured Pottery written by Sheramy D. Bundrick and published by University of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2019-02-26 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lucrative trade in Athenian pottery flourished from the early sixth until the late fifth century B.C.E., finding an eager market in Etruria. Most studies of these painted vases focus on the artistry and worldview of the Greeks who made them, but Sheramy D. Bundrick shifts attention to their Etruscan customers, ancient trade networks, and archaeological contexts. Thousands of Greek painted vases have emerged from excavations of tombs, sanctuaries, and settlements throughout Etruria, from southern coastal centers to northern communities in the Po Valley. Using documented archaeological assemblages, especially from tombs in southern Etruria, Bundrick challenges the widely held assumption that Etruscans were hellenized through Greek imports. She marshals evidence to show that Etruscan consumers purposefully selected figured pottery that harmonized with their own local needs and customs, so much so that the vases are better described as etruscanized. Athenian ceramic workers, she contends, learned from traders which shapes and imagery sold best to the Etruscans and employed a variety of strategies to maximize artistry, output, and profit.

Book excerpt: The eloquent beauty of the vases produced in the workshops of the ancient Greeks is represented by a selection of pieces from the superb private collection of Molly and Walter Bareiss that spans more than a thousand years of the craft. From a delightful miniature stirrup vase dating ca. 1300 B.C. to prime examples of the molded vases from Augustan Rome, the Bareiss collection includes a splendid representative collection, guided by a sure instinct for the unique beauty of design and drawing. Assembled in this brief catalogue are illustrated discussions of forty-seven of the masterpieces from the 258 vases currently on loan to the Getty Museum. Dietrich von Bothmer, Chairman of Greek and Roman Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, introduces this most important collection, one with which he has been intimately involved since its conception, advising, studying, interpreting, and even piecing together shattered vases. Following the individual catalogue entries is a full checklist of an additional 205 vases that are on loan to the Getty Museum.

Book Advances in Nonverbal Communication

Download or read book Advances in Nonverbal Communication written by Fernando Poyatos and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on nonverbal communication studies, the most multi- and interdisciplinary contribution to this field in almost twenty years, offers numerous suggestions for further research in many hitherto unexplored areas. The twenty contributions include the most recent theoretical and empirical crosscultural studies of gestures from historical, communicative and sociopsychological perspectives. In addition the volume presents novel psychological and clinical studies of nonverbal behaviors in connection with, for instance, aphasias and children's experience of artificial limbs. A whole section is devoted to nonverbal communication in literature and literary translation, and a discussion of art and literature, which opens new avenues for literary analysis and a better understanding of reading as a recreational experience. A unique feature is a discussion of Nonverbal Communication Studies as an academic area (including detailed outlines of three current courses), complemented by an extensive bibliography.
