Download or read book The Secret Life and Curious Death of Miss Jean Milne written by Andrew Nicoll and published by Black & White Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A mystery that touches the heart, with characters caught in a world that's harsh but trembles with tender emotions. A beautiful story." JAMES NAUGHTIE, BBC Radio 4 When the door opened and he came out, there came with him the stench of a dead thing, the sweet, sulphurous, warm, rotten chicken smell that only ever comes from unburied flesh. A dead body is found in a locked house. It has been stabbed in a frenzy, the hands and feet bound, the skull smashed, false teeth knocked from its jaws. Blood pools around the corpse and drips from the staircase. Yet nothing is missing: money and valuables remain untouched. Who could have murdered an old woman in such a horrifying way? And why? This is the mystery facing Sergeant John Fraser and Detective Lieutenant Trench when wealthy spinster Miss Jean Milne is murdered in the quiet seaside town of Broughty Ferry. Yet, despite an abundance of clues and apparent witnesses, the investigation proves troublesome: suspects are elusive and Miss Milne herself is found to be far from a model of propriety. And when sensational headlines put pressure on the police force to find a culprit, Fraser and Trench must work fast to prevent the wrong man from going to the gallows. But will they ever unravel the secret life and curious death of Miss Jean Milne? REVIEWS "Nicoll takes a true story and builds it into a twisting piece of prose with an unexpected shift towards the end." DAILY EXPRESS (****, Summer's Most Addictive Crime Fiction) "Beautifully Done." THE SUN "The sense of setting and era are spot on, and the dusky streets of Scotland are suitably spooky." HEAT MAGAZINE "A superb read, the sort of book that keeps you compulsively turning pages." UNDISCOVERED SCOTLAND "Nicoll offers a plausible, if shocking, solution to the crime at the end...in the style of the best Agatha Christie. The writing of a Christie-esque novel in the 21st century, however, requires a fresh and lively narrative, coupled with a wry and critical humour, to make it feel compellingly modern enough. Nicoll achieves that and more by bringing us, sometimes uncomfortably so, closer to our sins of the past." THE NATIONAL "An intelligent crime novel with secrets, passion and great characters - just a great murder mystery." PORTOBELLO BOOK BLOG "A triumph of tone, very moving, completely convincing." ANDREW MARR on The Good Mayor "An exuberant, whirlwind read, with a glint of steel beneath the frothy plot." THE GUARDIAN on The Good Mayor
Download or read book The Churches of Broughty Ferry written by G Wightman and published by Broughty Ferry Churches Group. This book was released on 101-01-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broughty Ferry on the outskirts of Dundee grew from a small fishing village to one of the wealthiest places in the world during the 19th century. As a consequence, a lot of churches were built, 11 being within an area of about 800m by 500 m. In its 12 chapters the history of each of church is described, along with the BFCG*, and the YMCA. There is also a chapter on early Christian worship in the area. Besides explaining why each church is here, the chapters also describe the people who made up the church and the buildings. Several of these are listed buildings, and a number of the stained-glass windows are thought to be of national importance. Some of our churches' style of worship have also stirred national debate, such as The Broughty Ferry Harmonium Case, or The Barnhill Case But the church is really the people rather than the building, and scattered throughout the book are anecdotes of ministers and church members. As well as individuals, congregations have played their part in the social life of the Ferry, particularly in the days before television. They also played their part helping others in times of disaster (for example, the capsize of the lifeboat Mona) or national emergencies, and in more peaceful times they have been a social conscience. Appendices list the buildings and their architects, the stained-glass windows, and the ministers of all the churches. *The Broughty Ferry Churches Group (BFCG) is an informal grouping of 9 churches representing 5 different denominations (Church of Scotland, Episcopalian, Catholic, Baptist, Methodist). The Congregational Church was also a member until it closed in 2005. The group has been working together for over 50 years

Book excerpt: An elephant sighs forlornly and dies by the side of the road, just outside Dundee: It is April 1706 and discussions are beginning for the proposed Act of Union. Closet Jacobite sympathiser Dr Patrick Blair, an ambitious local surgeon-apothecary, embarks on a mission to become the first man in Britain to dissect an elephant. He employs Gilbert Orum, harassed debtor, surgeon's assistant and skilled copper engraver, to help him. After the dissection, the skeleton is reassembled as the centre-piece for a new 'Hall of Rarities' in the town and Blair writes up his findings for the Royal Society in London, hoping to make his name as a great scientist. Ten years later, however, Blair languishes in a dungeon in London, condemned to death for his participation in the 1715 Jacobite rebellion. Gilbert Orum grasps the opportunity to write his own account of the dissection of the unfortunate elephant.
