Download or read book The Bront Sisters Collection written by Emily Brontë and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 2323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five novels by the nineteenth-century literary sisters who “turned domestic constraints into grist for brilliant books” (The Atlantic). This collection brings together five novels by Anne, Charlotte, and Emily Brontë in one volume. Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë: When a visitor arrives at a gloomy and isolated house in northern England, he discovers a story of passion, vengeance, and tragedy, in this gothic novel that shocked the readers of its day. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë: Revolutionary for its time, this Victorian novel is narrated by its titular character, telling the story of her childhood as an abused orphan, her school years, her time as a governess, and her simmering passion for the elusive Mr. Rochester. Agnes Grey by Anne Brontë: This novel follows the experiences of a minister’s daughter who, when her family becomes impoverished, begins working as a governess, bringing her inside the homes of the English gentry, where she observes both material wealth and spiritual deprivation. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë: Helen Graham is known as the young widow who moved into a long-empty mansion with her son, took up an artistic career, and kept her distance from her neighbors. But readers of this classic, considered one of the earliest feminist novels, will discover there is more to Helen’s story. Shirley by Charlotte Brontë: Set in a time of war, economic troubles, and the Luddites’ rebellion against the rise of machines, this is the story of two female friends: one a strong-willed heiress, the other an insecure girl abandoned by her mother.

Book The Illustrated Letters of the Bront s

Download or read book The Illustrated Letters of the Bront s written by Juliet Gardiner and published by Batsford. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Illustrated Letters of the Brontës is the story both of the real world of the Brontës at Haworth Parsonage, their home on the edge of the lonely Yorkshire moors, and of the imaginary worlds they spun for themselves in their novels and poetry. Wherever possible, their story is told using their own words – the letters they wrote to each other, Emily and Anne's secret diaries, and Charlotte's exchanges with luminaries of literary England – or those closest to them, such as their brother Branwell, their father Patrick Brontë, and their novelist friend Mrs Gaskell. The Brontës sketched and painted their worlds too, in delicate ink washes and watercolours of family and friends, animals and the English moors. These pictures illuminate the text as do the tiny drawings the Brontë children made to illustrate their imaginary worlds. In addition, there are facsimiles of their letters and diaries, paintings by artists of the day, and pictures of household life. It is a unique and privileged view of the real lives of three women, writers and sisters.

Book The Bront Cabinet Three Lives in Nine Objects

Download or read book The Bront Cabinet Three Lives in Nine Objects written by Deborah Lutz and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2015-05-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate portrait of the lives and writings of the Brontë sisters, drawn from the objects they possessed. In this unique and lovingly detailed biography of a literary family that has enthralled readers for nearly two centuries, Victorian literature scholar Deborah Lutz illuminates the complex and fascinating lives of the Brontës through the things they wore, stitched, wrote on, and inscribed. By unfolding the histories of the meaningful objects in their family home in Haworth, Lutz immerses readers in a nuanced re-creation of the sisters' daily lives while moving us chronologically forward through the major biographical events: the death of their mother and two sisters, the imaginary kingdoms of their childhood writing, their time as governesses, and their determined efforts to make a mark on the literary world. From the miniature books they made as children to the blackthorn walking sticks they carried on solitary hikes on the moors, each personal possession opens a window onto the sisters' world, their beloved fiction, and the Victorian era. A description of the brass collar worn by Emily’s bull mastiff, Keeper, leads to a series of entertaining anecdotes about the influence of the family’s dogs on their writing and about the relationship of Victorians to their pets in general. The sisters' portable writing desks prove to have played a crucial role in their writing lives: it was Charlotte's snooping in Emily’s desk that led to the sisters' first publication in print, followed later by the publication of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. Charlotte's letters provide insight into her relationships, both innocent and illicit, including her relationship with the older professor to whom she wrote passionately. And the bracelet Charlotte had made of Anne and Emily's intertwined hair bears witness to her profound grief after their deaths. Lutz captivatingly shows the Brontës anew by bringing us deep inside the physical world in which they lived and from which their writings took inspiration.

In looking over my sister Anne's papers, I find mournful evidence that religious feeling had been to her but too much like what it was to Cowper; I mean, of course, in a far milder form. Without rendering her a prey to those horrors that defy concealment, it subdued her mood and bearing to a perpetual pensiveness; the pillar of a cloud glided constantly before her eyes; she ever waited at the foot of a. secret Sinai, listening in her heart to the voice of a trumpet sounding long and waxing louder. Some, perhaps, would rejoice over these tokens of sincere though sorrowing piety in a deceased relative: I own, to me they seem sad, as if her whole innocent life had been passed under the martyrdom of an unconfessed physical pain: their effect, indeed, would be too distressing, were it not combated by the certain knowledge that in her last moments this tyranny of a too tender conscience was overcome; this pomp of terrors broke up, and, passing away, left her dying hour unclouded. Her belief in God did not then bring to her dread, as of a stem Judge -- but hope, as in a Creator and Saviour: and no faltering hope was it, but a sure and steadfast conviction, on which, in the rude passage from Time to Eternity, she threw the weight of her human weakness, and by which she was enabled to bear what was to be borne, patiently -- serenely -- victoriously....

Agnes Grey, based upon her experiences as a governess, was published in 1847.
