Book Broken Symmetries and Signatures

Download or read book Broken Symmetries and Signatures written by Andrew Liam Fitzpatrick and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We consider three possible extensions of the Standard Model. In the first model, we explore the possibility to solve the strong CP problem and flavor puzzle in a model with fermions in the bulk of a warped extra dimensions, making use of the enhanced spacetime symmetries present in extra dimensions. In the second, we systematically explore the possible low-energy spectrum arising from gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking when the messenger sector obeys a U(1) R-symmetry and all allowed renormalizable operators in the messenger sector are included. In the third, we study single-field models of inflation using an effective theory for the pions of spontaneously broken time translation invariance and explicitly prove a consistency relation for the three-point function of density perturbations.

Book Broken Symmetry in Curved Spacetime and Gravity

Download or read book Broken Symmetry in Curved Spacetime and Gravity written by Charles D. Lane and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-11-13 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains several recent articles written about broken spacetime symmetry. The context is curved spacetime as used in General Relativity and the broken symmetry most discussed is Local Lorentz Symmetry. While there is currently no experimental evidence for broken Lorentz symmetry in nature, it is an object of great study from theoretical, phenomenological, and experimental perspectives. All three appear in this volume. There are three review articles in this volume: Fabian Kislat summarizes astrophysical probes of Lorentz violation, especially those using polarized light; Michael Seifert discusses a particular limit of the Standard-Model Extension that is useful for relating theoretical and experimental ideas; and Marco Schreck describes circumstances under which gravitational Cerenkov radiation could arise from Lorentz violation. The other three articles focus more on original research: Charles Lane and Quentin Bailey relate a particular theory of noncommutative geometry to the curved-spacetime Standard-Model Extension; Yuri Bonder and Christobal Corral consider the existence of spacetime symmetries in models with explicit Lorentz violation; and Pawel Gusin et al. study a spacetime transformation that relates the inside and outside of a nonrotating black hole.

Book Gauge Symmetries Symmetry Breaking and Gauge Invariant Approaches

Download or read book Gauge Symmetries Symmetry Breaking and Gauge Invariant Approaches written by Philipp Berghofer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gauge symmetries play a central role, both in the mathematical foundations as well as the conceptual construction of modern (particle) physics theories. However, it is yet unclear whether they form a necessary component of theories, or whether they can be eliminated. It is also unclear whether they are merely an auxiliary tool to simplify (and possibly localize) calculations or whether they contain independent information. Therefore their status, both in physics and philosophy of physics, remains to be fully clarified. This Element reviews the current state of affairs on both the philosophy and the physics side. In particular, it focuses on the circumstances in which the restriction of gauge theories to gauge invariant information on an observable level is warranted, using the Brout-Englert-Higgs theory as an example of particular current importance. Finally, the authors determine a set of yet to be answered questions to clarify the status of gauge symmetries.

Book Symmetries in Nuclear Structure

Download or read book Symmetries in Nuclear Structure written by Andrea Vitturi and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004-04-15 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Highly Specialized Seminar on "Symmetries in Nuclear Structure", held in Erice, Italy, in March 2003, celebrated the career and the remarkable achievements of Francesco Iachello, on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Since the development of the interacting boson model in the early 1970s, the ideas of Iachello have provided a variety of frameworks for understanding collective behaviour in nuclear structure, founded on the concepts of dynamical symmetries and spectrum-generating algebras. The original ideas, which were developed for the description of atomic nuclei, have now been successfully extended to cover spectroscopic behaviour in other fields, such as molecular or hadronic spectra. More recently, the suggestion by Iachello of critical point symmetries to treat nuclei in shape/phase transitional regions has opened an exciting new front for both theoreticians and experimentalists. The talks presented at the meeting covered many of the most active forefront areas of nuclear structure as well as other fields where ideas of symmetries are being explored. Topics in nuclear structure included extensive discussions on dynamical symmetries, critical point symmetries, phase transitions, statistical properties of nuclei, supersymmetry, mixed symmetry states, shears bands, pairing and clustering in nuclei, shape coexistence, exotic nuclei, dipole modes, and astrophysics, among others. In addition, important sessions focused on talks by European laboratory directors (or their representatives) outlining prospects for nuclear structure, and the application of symmetry ideas to molecular phenomena. Finally, a special lecture by Nobel laureate Alex Mueller, on s and d wave symmetry in superconductors, presented a unique insight into an allied field. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in:* Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP / ISI Proceedings)* Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings)* CC Proceedings -- Engineering & Physical Sciences

Book Conformal Symmetry Breaking Operators for Differential Forms on Spheres

Download or read book Conformal Symmetry Breaking Operators for Differential Forms on Spheres written by Toshiyuki Kobayashi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is the first systematic study of all possible conformally covariant differential operators transforming differential forms on a Riemannian manifold X into those on a submanifold Y with focus on the model space (X, Y) = (Sn, Sn-1). The authors give a complete classification of all such conformally covariant differential operators, and find their explicit formulæ in the flat coordinates in terms of basic operators in differential geometry and classical hypergeometric polynomials. Resulting families of operators are natural generalizations of the Rankin–Cohen brackets for modular forms and Juhl's operators from conformal holography. The matrix-valued factorization identities among all possible combinations of conformally covariant differential operators are also established. The main machinery of the proof relies on the "F-method" recently introduced and developed by the authors. It is a general method to construct intertwining operators between C∞-induced representations or to find singular vectors of Verma modules in the context of branching rules, as solutions to differential equations on the Fourier transform side. The book gives a new extension of the F-method to the matrix-valued case in the general setting, which could be applied to other problems as well. This book offers a self-contained introduction to the analysis of symmetry breaking operators for infinite-dimensional representations of reductive Lie groups. This feature will be helpful for active scientists and accessible to graduate students and young researchers in differential geometry, representation theory, and theoretical physics.

Book Electroweak Symmetry Breaking And New Physics At The Tev Scale

Download or read book Electroweak Symmetry Breaking And New Physics At The Tev Scale written by Timothy L Barklow and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-05-05 with total page 749 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an expanded version of the report by the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking and Beyond the Standard Model Working Group which was contributed to Particle Physics — Perspectives and Opportunities, a report of the Division of Particles and Fields Committee for Long Term Planning. One of the Working Group's primary goals was to study the phenomenology of electroweak symmetry breaking and attempt to quantify the “physics reach” of present and future colliders. Their investigations encompassed the Standard Model — with one doublet of Higgs scalars — and approaches to physics beyond the Standard Model. These include models of low-energy supersymmetry, dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, and a variety of extensions of the Standard Model with new particles and interactions. The Working Group also considered signals of new physics in precision measurements arising from virtual processes and examined experimental issues associated with the study of electroweak symmetry breaking and the search for new physics at present and future hadron and lepton colliders. This volume represents an important contribution to the efforts being made to advance the frontiers of particle physics.

Book Symmetry Breaking for Representations of Rank One Orthogonal Groups II

Download or read book Symmetry Breaking for Representations of Rank One Orthogonal Groups II written by Toshiyuki Kobayashi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-27 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides the first classification theory of matrix-valued symmetry breaking operators from principal series representations of a reductive group to those of its subgroup. The study of symmetry breaking operators (intertwining operators for restriction) is an important and very active research area in modern representation theory, which also interacts with various fields in mathematics and theoretical physics ranging from number theory to differential geometry and quantum mechanics. The first author initiated a program of the general study of symmetry breaking operators. The present book pursues the program by introducing new ideas and techniques, giving a systematic and detailed treatment in the case of orthogonal groups of real rank one, which will serve as models for further research in other settings. In connection to automorphic forms, this work includes a proof for a multiplicity conjecture by Gross and Prasad for tempered principal series representations in the case (SO(n + 1, 1), SO(n, 1)). The authors propose a further multiplicity conjecture for nontempered representations.Viewed from differential geometry, this seminal work accomplishes the classification of all conformally covariant operators transforming differential forms on a Riemanniann manifold X to those on a submanifold in the model space (X, Y) = (Sn, Sn-1). Functional equations and explicit formulæ of these operators are also established. This book offers a self-contained and inspiring introduction to the analysis of symmetry breaking operators for infinite-dimensional representations of reductive Lie groups. This feature will be helpful for active scientists and accessible to graduate students and young researchers in representation theory, automorphic forms, differential geometry, and theoretical physics.

Book Heavy Neutral Particle Decays to Tau Pairs

Download or read book Heavy Neutral Particle Decays to Tau Pairs written by Michail Bachtis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-13 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work presented in this thesis spans a wide range of experimental particle physics subjects, starting from level-1 trigger electronics to the final results of the search for Higgs boson decay and to tau lepton pairs. The thesis describes an innovative reconstruction algorithm for tau decays and details how it was instrumental in providing a measurement of Z decay to tau lepton pairs. The reliability of the analysis is fully established by this measurement before the Higgs boson decay to tau lepton pairs is considered. The work described here continues to serve as a model for analysing CMS Higgs to tau leptons measurements.
