Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from West Broadway Fter a severe attack of thinking I have come to realize how true is the poet's word, A Little Educa tion Can Start a Hell of a Lot of Trouble. Do you get me? Like a dose of medicine it has got to be measured right to have a real desirable effect. Take too little and it only sort of makes you sick; take too much and you will be worse Off than before. And I have come also to realize that what ails a good part of this country today is a little education. We got a small dose and it ain't working either one way or another, which is maybe rather a rough thing for one which is at once a lady, a mother and a admittedly great actress like myself to say, but then all great truths are more or less rough. Anyways, it is a clear, general statement, which is a dangerous thing to make, and I wouldn't make one that was not based on personal Observation, and this one is based on several weeks of it. Book Over the Hills to Broadway Classic Reprint

Download or read book Over the Hills to Broadway Classic Reprint written by James S. Stone and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Over the Hills to Broadway They who have read the "Heart of Merrie England" will scarcely need to be told in what part of England to look for the places named in the following pages. The villages lie near the borderland of Gloucestershire and Worcestershire, and if the reader will take his map and find Stratford-upon-Avon, he will see Shipston-on-Stour lying south ten miles, a little to the east, and Evesham more to the west of the same point of the compass. South of a line drawn between the last two towns are the places hereinafter referred to. My gossip will be better enjoyed if the country travelled over be thus ascertained. The August spoken of was that of 1892, and most of this account was written at or very near the time - all of it within the region traversed. I have made little revision of my original sketches. They were written in pencil, and mostly as they were written they went to the printer. Possibly, as a result of this, my readers will find little to appreciate except the freshness of the work. I have taken for granted that whoever took the trouble to run over this booklet would be my friend, with whom I might sit in my study or, if I had a garden, under my own ivy, and at my will either laugh or talk seriously. Such an one would have kindly feeling enough not to misunderstand me. The illustrations, made expressly for this article, are taken from photographs secured by me while at Broadway. I have to thank the proprietors of The American Church Sunday School Magazine for their kind permission to reprint from their journal these pages. Should this reprint prove acceptable further articles of a similar nature will find their way into the magazine and further reprints will be made. Book The Bus Comes Back to Broadway Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Bus Comes Back to Broadway Classic Reprint written by New York City Omnibus Corporation and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bus Comes Back to Broadway Horse cars did not last long on Broadway, for in the early nineties there arose an agitation for a more modern motive power. Accord ingly, the road was changed to cable, the first cable car being run over the line in June, 1893. This proved to be a somewhat dangerous type of operation, especially on curves. So many accidents occurred at 14th Street, where the road made a sharp turn from Union Square into lower Broadway, that the point earned for itself the unsavory sobriquet of Dead Man's Curve. After the underground trolley had been tried out successfully on other routes it was decided to introduce it on Broadway. Installation of the system was commenced inaugust, 1898, and the work was not completed until the Spring of 1901, the first electrically operated car being run on May 26th. For more than a generation the under ground trolley car has carried the millions of business people, shoppers, pleasure seekers and sightseers whose presence there has made Broad way the world's best known thoroughfare.
