Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located in southern Cuyahoga County at the crossroads of the Ohio Turnpike and Interstate 77 are the rolling hills and forested landscapes of Broadview Heights. "Highest of the Heights" is the phrase coined by disc jockey Ed Fisher when radio station WGAR's broadcast studio was located in Broadview Heights. Many radio personalities either lived here or in neighboring communities, and events in Broadview Heights were often mentioned on the radio. Part of the Cleveland Metro Parks surrounds the southern edge of town, including the highest point in Cuyahoga County. Among those who call Broadview Heights home are Radio Hall of Fame disc jockey Candy Lee, artist Shirley Aley Campbell, figure skater Tonia Kwiatkowski, and Cultural Olympiad gold medal-winning ice sculptor Aaron Costic of Elegant Ice Creations.

Download or read book Wuthering Heights Ed Newman written by Emily Brontë and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2007-04-11 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over a hundred and fifty years after its initial publication, Emily Brontë’s turbulent portrayal of the Earnshaws and the Lintons, two northern English households nearly destroyed by violent passions in the last quarter of the eighteenth century, continues to provoke and fascinate readers. Heathcliff remains one of the best-known characters in the English novel, and Catherine Earnshaw’s impossible choice between two rivals retains its appeal for contemporary readers. At the same time, the novel’s highly ambivalent representations of domesticity, its famous reticence about its characters and their actions, its formal features as a story within a story, and the mystery of Heathcliff’s origins and identity provide material for classroom discussion at every level of study. The introduction and appendices to this Broadview edition, which place Brontë’s life and novel in the context of the developing “Brontë myth,” explore the impact of industrialization on the people of Yorkshire, consider the novel’s representation of gender, and survey the ways contemporary scholarship has sought to account for Heathcliff, open up multiple contexts within which Wuthering Heights can be read, understood, and enjoyed.

Download or read book Where We Live written by Randy Cunningham and published by The Pilgrim Press. This book was released on 2024-06-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on extensive interviews he conducted with environmental activists across rural and urban Appalachia and the Midwest, Randy Cunningham analyzes what motivates activists, how they strategize, and what issues they encounter. An indispensable guide to the on-the-ground realities of environmental activism in contemporary America. Randy Cunningham's Where We Live analyzes key aspects of environmental activism through the perspectives of those who know the field best: activists themselves. Each chapter grapples with a different topic. Readers thus come to know not only the stories of individuals and groups in their specific struggles. Cunningham's sharp analysis also enables readers to grasp how their struggles are related to one another. This book will be invaluable to activists looking for a better understanding of their own work as well as to historians, sociologists, and anthropologists conducting research on environmentalism in the contemporary United States. The book includes extensive documentation and endnotes.
Download or read book Fractured Communities written by Anthony E. Ladd and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While environmental disputes and conflicts over fossil fuel extraction have grown in recent years, few issues have been as contentious in the twenty-first century as those surrounding the impacts of unconventional natural gas and oil development using hydraulic drilling and fracturing techniques—more commonly known as “fracking”—on local communities. In Fractured Communities, Anthony E. Ladd and other leading environmental sociologists present a set of crucial case studies analyzing the differential risk perceptions, socio-environmental impacts, and mobilization of citizen protest (or quiescence) surrounding unconventional energy development and hydraulic fracking in a number of key U.S. shale regions. Fractured Communities reveals how this contested terrain is expanding, pushing the issue of fracking into the mainstream of the American political arena.
