Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Symposium in Brittle Matrix Composites October 13-15, 2003 covers a wide spectrum of topics including cement based composites, ceramic composites and brittle polymer matrix composites. In the papers various topics and issues are considered such as: analytical and numerical studies related to the design of composites, prediction of behaviour and verification of strength and stability, testing methods, manufacturing processes and repair, environmental effects and durability assessment. The present volume of 55 papers proves that there are still many problems in the field of brittle matrix composites deserving theoretical and experimental investigations and that new solutions to these problems are needed for practical application in civil engineering, industrial structures, machinery and other domains.

Book excerpt: Construction industry like any other area of economic and social life undergoes continuous alterations and improvements in order to successfully comply with the requirements of sustainable development. Consumers demand more durable, less labour and service intensive materials at a competitive price. To meet these expectations numerous new composite materials have been developed over the last couple of decades, including cementitious materials modified by superabsorbent polymers (SAP). The paper presents part of the larger research project on the performance of cementitious mortars containing two types of superabsorbent polymers (SAP) as the internal curing agent.SAP A is a copolymer of acrylamide and acrylic acid and SAP B is a polymer based on acrylic acid. Research work presented in this paper involves macro and micro scale characterisation of polymer modified mortars. The microstructural features were studied with application of the Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry and the Scanning Electron Microscopy techniques. Analyses of pore size distribution in mortars of different ages are accompanied by the analyses of strength and autogenous shrinkage development as well as early density changes in immature mortars by the X-ray absorption method. The investigations confirmed the positive effect of SAP A on the reduction of autogenous shrinkage and microcrack propagation. Limited absorption/desorption abilities of SAP B cannot reassure continuous supply of water and hence the performance of SAP B mortars was comparable with the reference samples. The effect of both SAPs on strength development proved to be negligible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers contained herein were presented at the Second International Sym posium on Brittle Matrix Composites (BMC2) held at Cedzyna, Poland, 20-22 September 1988. The colloquium was organiscd and sponsored by thc Institute of Fundamental Technological Research, Polish Academy of Sciences, in associa tion with Kielce Technical University and the Civil Engineering Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The Symposium forms a logical progression from BMCI which was held in Jablonna, Poland, in November 1985. As the title implies, the Symposium addressed a variety of problems ranging from concrete to ceramics and so on; others which become embrittled under extraneous conditions were also addressed. Participants from twenty countries (Belgium, Bulgaria, People's Republic of China, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Finland, France, Federal Republic of Germany, German Democratic Republic, Hungary, Japan, North Korea, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, the Soviet Union, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States and Vietnam) contri butcd to the success of the event. For logistical reasons, apart from five invited Plenary papers, the remaining sixty-nine contributions were, broadly speaking, subdivided into two Parallel Sessions. One branch dealt with Cement Based Composites, the other with Poly mers and Ceramics. Except for the inherent disadvantages of Parallel Sessions, this was probably the most efficient subdivision possible.

Download or read book Brittle Matrix Composites written by Tatiana V. Lyashenko and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fibre reinforced polymer-cement compositions for self-levelling flooring are studied. The individual and combined effects of dispersible polymer powder with properties of binder and superplasticiser, of various methylcelluloses, and of polypropylene fibre on effective viscosity of the mix and mechanical properties of the hardened mortar are evaluated and analysed. Used for analysis are multifactor experimental-statistical models built on the data obtained for 18 mixes (of the same workability) in the designed experiment and describing the fields of rheological model parameters, of strength, and other criteria in composition coordinates. The models have made it possible to simulate material behaviour in computational experiments, to reveal and evaluate the correlations of the properties for different technological conditions, to find individual and compromise optima.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper presents the methods of controlling sedimentation of cement mix using D-cube flow, slump, cone immersion and electrical resistance tests. These methods make it possible to control the sedimentation of aggregates and fibers, the optimization of different admixtures and additives and the rheological properties of cement mixes. The electrical resistance test for cement composites was modified. The cube (150x 150x 150mm) was equipped with two electrodes to measure the resistance of the mix. For sedimentation measurement electrodes were placed in the upper and bottom part of the mix. Measured changes of the resistance at different depths of the mix give the information about the sedimentation of components. The main advantage of the D-cube (150x150x150 mm) flow, slump and cone immersion tests is the ability to do it without advanced measuring devices and the fact that one method is sufficient to compare the rheological properties of cement pastes, mortars and concretes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper will discuss novel techniques for pore network exploration and the assessment of topological and geometrical characteristics relevant for durability estimation. The discussed methods are applicable to DEM-produced cementitious materials in which binder particle are realistically dispersed. This cannot be achieved by the in concrete technology popular random generator-based systems. Development of the discussed techniques was inspired by the path finding algorithms developed in robotics. The presented techniques are called double random multiple tree structuring (DraMuTS) and random node structuring (RaNoS). The path finding algorithms are adapted to the porosimetry problem and as a consequence modified to exclude time-consuming iterations. Moreover, path finding will take place starting from a large number of positions to enhance the economy of the approach.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper presents results of tests on self-compacting mixtures with the addition of steel fibres (Steel Fibre Reinforced Self-Compacting Concrete). Four types of steel fibres at 3 levels of the volume ratio are considered. The results include studies on samples belonging to classes of slump flow SF, classes of viscosity T500, and rheological tests. The studies were based on application of two rheometers for rheological properties of concrete mixtures - BT2 Rheometer and Viskomat XL. Additionally, a study of compressive strength fcm,28 and flexural strength f was carried out on concrete SFRSCC. These studies have confirmed the possibility of using steel fibres in concrete SCC while maintaining the assumed technological parameters for concrete mixtures and, above all, their workability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper a model is presented to simulate fracture of fibre reinforced cement based materials. The model is based on a lattice-type fracture model. Fibres are explicitly implemented as separate elements connected to the cement matrix via special interface elements. With the model multiple cracking and ductile global behaviour are simulated of the composite material. Variables in the model are the fibre dimensions and properties, the fibre volume in the composite, the bond behaviour of fibres and matrix and the cement matrix properties. These properties are obtained by testing, which will be described in the paper. The model is used as a design tool for creating fibre cement based composites with any desired mechanical behaviour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper aims to get insight into the physical significance of the results obtained from curve fitting of a stochastic cracking model on experimental tensile stress-strain data of cementitious composites which are uniaxially reinforced with continuous fibre bundles of different kinds, such as glass, basalt, carbon, polyethylene and polyvinyl alcohol fibres. An experimental test program is performed on the different composites containing typically 20% in volume of fibres, as well on the fibre bundles themselves. A short introduction is given to the theory behind the stochastic cracking model, based on a Weibull distribution of the matrix cracking stress, which is used for modelling the experimental results. The obtained tensile stress–strain curves are analysed by means of curve fitting and an attempt is made to draw conclusions on the physical meaning of these results. The experimental results of tensile tests on specimens with an inorganic phosphate cement matrix containing the different fibre types, revealed a wide range of mechanical behaviour: carbon fibres result in a very stiff material, PE fibres in a very strong material, while the use of PVA fibres results in a very flexible and ductile composite. Curve fitting of the stochastic cracking model on the experimental data was successfully performed, leading to the identification of the Weibull model parameters. The reference cracking strength was found to be much higher than the mean matrix cracking strength. An interpretation, based on the phenomenon of crack suppression, is given for these high values compared to those found in literature for cement composites.
