Book Women s Diaries as Narrative in the Nineteenth Century Novel

Download or read book Women s Diaries as Narrative in the Nineteenth Century Novel written by Catherine Delafield and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using private diary writing as her model, Catherine Delafield investigates the cultural significance of nineteenth-century women's writing and reading practices. Beginning with an examination of non-fictional diaries and the practice of diary-writing, she assesses the interaction between the fictional diary and other forms of literary production such as epistolary narrative, the periodical, the factual document and sensation fiction. The discrepancies between the private diary and its use as a narrative device are explored through the writings of Frances Burney, Elizabeth Gaskell, Anne Brontë, Dinah Craik, Wilkie Collins and Bram Stoker. The ideological function of the diary, Delafield suggests, produces a conflict in fictional narrative between that diary's received use as a domestic and spiritual record and its authority as a life-writing opportunity for women. Delafield considers women as writers, readers, and subjects and contextualizes her analysis within nineteenth-century reading practice. She demonstrates ways in which women could becomes performers of their own story through a narrative method which was authorized by their femininity and at the same time allowed them to challenge the myth of domestic womanhood.

Download or read book Love and War in London written by Olivia Cockett and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2016-10-21 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love & War in London is rooted in the extraordinary milieu of wartime London. Vibrant and engaging, Olivia Cockett’s diary reveals her frustrations, fears, pleasures and self-doubts. She recorded her mood swings and tried to understand them, and wrote of her lover (a married man) and the intense relationship they had. As she and her friends and family in New Scotland Yard were swept up by the momentous events of another European war, she vividly reported on what she saw and heard in her daily life. Hers is a diary that brings together the personal and the public. It permits us to understand how one intelligent, imaginative woman struggled to make sense of her life, as the city in which she lived was drawn into the turmoil of a catastrophic war.

Book The Secret Diaries Of Miss Anne Lister Vol 1

Download or read book The Secret Diaries Of Miss Anne Lister Vol 1 written by Anne Lister and published by Virago. This book was released on 2010-11-04 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the extraordinary diaries of the real Anne Lister: the inspiration for Gentleman Jack and Emma Donoghue's new novel Learned By Heart 'Engaging, revealing, at times simply astonishing' SARAH WATERS '[Anne Lister's] sense of self, and self-awareness, is what makes her modern to us . . . The diaries gave me courage' JEANETTE WINTERSON 'The Lister diaries are the Dead Sea Scrolls of lesbian history' EMMA DONOGHUE When this volume of Anne Lister's diaries was first published in 1988, it was hailed as a vital piece of lost lesbian history. The editor, Helena Whitbread, had spent years painstakingly researching and transcribing Lister's extensive journals, much of which were written in an elaborate code - what Lister called her 'crypthand', which allowed her to record her life in intimate, and at times, explicit, detail. Until then, Anne Lister's lesbianism had been supressed or hinted at; this was the first time her story had been told. Anne Lister defied the role of nineteenth century womanhood: she was bold, fiercely independent, a landowner, industrialist, traveller and lesbian - a woman who lived her life on her own terms. These diaries include the years 1816-1824. The second volume, continuing Anne's story, THE SECRET DIARIES OF MISS ANNE LISTER: NO PRIEST BUT LOVE, is now available.

Book In the Presence of Audience

Download or read book In the Presence of Audience written by Deborah Martinson and published by Ohio State University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martinson examines the diaries of Virginia Woolf, Katherine Mansfield, Violet Hunt and Doris Lessing's fictional character Anna Wulf. She argues that these diaries (and others like them) are not entirely private writings, but that their authors wrote them knowing they would be read. She argues that the audience is the author's male lover or husband and describes how knowledge of this audience affects the language and content in each diary. She argues that this audience enforces a certain 'male censorship' which changes the shape of the revelations and of the writer herself.
